Should have just given the universal basic income for single mothers and let them be mothers rather than to rush them out into the workforce to pay a mortgage.

The whole idea of both parents working to acquire materialistic things is a contrary argument to having kids. They already gave income splitting the okay but that was just another tax benefit for the rich.

Children are the victims in this plan.

CBC could just grab random people and ask them to read that days news for $200 or whatever it takes. Wouldn't really matter a hill of beans and it might drive the ratings.

Judge orders CBC to pay nearly $1.7M in defamation case

Manitoba judge finds broadcaster failed to prove stories about investment adviser weren’t defamatory

Reported by CBC so you know it put CBC in a better light than deserved
Big deal. It's us that's paying that bill, not the CBC.

CBC News I agree is biased.

But it's the REST of the programming that CBC does that honestly I don't want to see removed from airwaves - regardless of what 'airwaves' it is. So no, don't 'defund' CBC, but rather put conditions on how the money is spent.

Defunding means relying on ad dollars not going off the air.

Now that Canada has top notch production companies CBC has farming out productions rather than doing it all in house. They have a few excellent programs.

Murdoch Mysteries Miami would be a hit.

CBC executives, managers were paid almost $15M in bonuses: Report
Report seems to contradict testimony of broadcaster's president/CEO at Commons committee

Federal documents show that CBC executives and managers in the 2023-24 fiscal year ending March 31 gave themselves $14.9 million in bonuses, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.

All 46 network executives received bonuses worth $3,020,021, said an inquiry of ministry tabled in the House of Commons, and another 1,140 managers (99% of those on the payroll) also received bonuses worth $11,883,734.

Figures were disclosed at the request of Opposition House leader Andrew Scheer.

“With regard to bonuses paid out at Crown corporations in the 2023-24 fiscal year, how many and what percentage of officials at or above the executive level received bonuses?” Scheer said.

Those records seem to contradict testimony by CBC president and CEO Catherine Tait to the heritage committee on May 7, when she repeatedly claimed that she had no idea whether or not bonuses were paid.

“Are you going to be awarded a bonus for 2023?” asked Conservative MP Rachael Thomas.

“After internal deliberations with the board of directors at our June board meeting, once we’ve had a chance to present the audited financial statements, there will be a discussion,” replied Tait.

“I am referring to fiscal year 2023, which ended in March 2024,” said Thomas.

“We have not issued any performance pay,” replied Tait.

Tait told the heritage committee that the public broadcaster was facing financial hardship and was cutting 346 jobs, including 205 vacant positions and 141 layoffs.

“We are not out of the woods,” Tait testified.

Tait is paid $497,000 annually with her CEO bonus calculated at an average of 20% extra or about $100,000 annually.

The inquiry document made no mention of Tait’s testimony.

Overall subsidies for the CBC this year are worth a record $1.38 billion.

And they all work until they are 75 because they are making so much money. What would be good is if they actually spent that bonus money in Canada rather than to just accumulate in their bank account or to spend it abroad.

CBC/Radio-Canada board approves bonuses for 2023-24, but will review practice

OTTAWA — The board of directors for CBC and Radio-Canada has approved bonuses for some staff, following a fiscal year that saw 141 employees let go, and another 205 vacant positions eliminated.

The decision was posted quietly on the public broadcaster’s website last month following a board of directors meeting.

A spokesman for CBC would not disclose how much money was doled out to the 1,194 eligible employees during the 2023-24 fiscal year, saying it’s internal information.

The public broadcaster has insisted that the money is performance pay and is part of some employees’ overall total compensation under existing contracts, to be paid out when certain company goals are met.

CEO Catherine Tait has faced questions at two parliamentary committee hearings this year on whether bonuses would roll out for the 2023-24 fiscal year, after the public broadcaster announced cuts in December due to a projected shortfall at the time.

The board says it is also reviewing its compensation regime for future years, acknowledging public concerns that bonuses shouldn’t be awarded during times of financial pressures and layoffs.
