Bill’s C-10 & C-11. If we aren’t talking about it already, shouldn’t we be?

This has to start somewhere, so might as well start with a Wiki summary of C-11 (as C-10 got squashed when the last election got called):

The Online Streaming Act (Bill C-11) is a proposed Canadian federal legislation. It was first introduced on November 3, 2020 by Minister of Canadian Heritage Steven Guilbeault during the second session of the 43rd Canadian Parliament as An Act to amend the Broadcasting Act (Bill C-10), which passed in the House of Commons on June 22, 2021, but failed to pass the Senate before Parliament was dissolved for a federal election. It was reintroduced with amendments as the Online Streaming Act during the first session of the 44th Canadian Parliament in February 2022.
When you cross pollinate the above Bill C-11 with Bill C-18 with a side of Mis-Dis-Cis-Information… you come out with the online harms act. Watch for this to be sneaking into the news as we sneak into 2024…

Canada’s justice minister said he hopes to avoid accusations that the Liberal government is trying to regulate or curb speech with its planed bill to protect people from online harms.

“Where I don’t want this bill to go is down some sort of path where it looks like people are trying to tell you what to think, or how to criticize people,” etc…federal Justice Minister Arif Virani told The Canadian Press in a wide-ranging interview last week.

But, but, but that's exactly what Trudeau wants to do. Is this guy for real?

David Menzies was grabbed by an RCMP officer and told he was under arrest for assault as he was asking the minister questions outside of a vigil in Richmond Hill, just north of Toronto, to mark four years since Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shot down Flight PS752, killing 176 people, many of them Canadian.

“The arrest of the Rebel News reporter was made by the Prime Minister’s RCMP security detail. York Regional Police officers assisted as the interaction took place in our region,” said Constable Lisa Moskaluk, a media relations officer with York police.

“It was determined that no credible security threat existed and the subject was released unconditionally shortly thereafter.”

Menzies is seen on the video approaching Freeland outside as she walks towards the event’s entrance. She doesn’t stop to talk. Menzies asks two questions as he matches her pace.

Tilting his microphone back and forth between them as they walk to capture his questions and her responses that don’t come, Menzies almost walks into a column, behind which a man in a long dark coat stands, with his right shoulder seeming to poke out into the walkway.
Menzies “collides” with the man’s right shoulder and the man immediately reaches out to corral Menzies as Freeland then dekes around in the other direction.

The man grabs Menzies by his coat lapels and shoves him against a wall as other men swarm in and Freeland, and a woman walking with her, keep walking.

“You’re under arrest,” the man says, according to the video. He then grabs Menzies’ arm that holds his microphone and twists it down. “You’re under arrest for assault,” the officer adds.

“Why am I under arrest, you bumped into me,” Menzies asks.
“You pushed into me,” the officer replies. Menzies asks him his name and badge number but he is not heard answering.

“You’ve been told you’re under arrest,” another unidentified man in a suit says as he reaches out for Menzies.

“Why am I under arrest? He blocked my way,” Menzies tells the second man. The first officer then tells Menzies he is a peace officer and Menzies is under arrest for assaulting a peace officer.
Uniformed members of York police first stand and watch but later are seen handcuffing Menzies and leading him away.
The RCMP and Freeland’s office had not yet provided comment on the incident in response to questions from National Post prior to deadline. “It was determined that no credible security threat existed and the subject was released unconditionally shortly thereafter.”

Levant (Ezra Levant, founder and owner of Rebel News) told National Post that Menzies being released by police off site without charge does not end Rebel News’ interest in the matter.

“Why did they handcuff him? Why did they smash his face against a wall?” he said. “We have retained legal counsel and expect to sue the RCMP, YRP and Freeland as soon as this week, for false arrest, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, and assault.”

Thankfully no Liberal bias here.

That one even made the "WTF?" news down hereabouts.
It is weird. Not surprising currently, but still weird. The incident has received global attention.

I almost wish there was a second cameraman there just to keep Freeland’s face in frame during this…but I’m glad the cameraman stayed on Menzies & the RCMP. Without the cameraman, if this was just a radio interview, this probably would’ve turned out very very differently.

If you watch the video, you can see Busty McSidekick scoot forward from the left of Freeland to the right of Menzies, blocking the view forward, & make eye contact with the plainclothes RCMP dude:
1704847807813.jpeg
…then swerve around the grey pole to the outside, steering Menzies to the inside of the pole, & Baldy McDo-Right squares up & steps in leading with his right shoulder and steps into Menzies.
1704847942079.jpeg
If the RC didn’t have forward momentum, he would’ve went backwards when hit if he was hit…but instead he stayed in place & Menzies gets bounced towards the building as he tries to pivot away while RC blocks his way spreading his arms and coat.

I’m no fan of David Menzies or Rebel News, but this was unmitigated bullshit by law enforcement who didn’t “sort of” identify themselves until after assaulting Menzies.

When asked repeatedly for a name and a badge number (sure as hell not in uniform) it fell on deaf ears. Laws are for peons.
1704849872832.jpeg Laureen Harper, wife of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, weighed in as well.

“Police colleges should show this footage to trainees on what not to do,” she wrote. “What an overreaction, and what no coffee provided?”
Elon Musk wrote on X. “Fine for the officer to body block someone trying to get close to a senior government official, but false to say that he deliberately assaulted an officer.”

Ron Chhinzer, a former police officer in Peel Region who has aspirations for public office, called the arrest “an absolute embarrassment to the profession.”
David Menzies was arrested after a plainclothes police officer bumped into him, accusing Menzies of assault, after he asked the Deputy PM why the government won't put the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Canada's list of terrorist entities.
Freeland ignores Menzies, but the plainclothes RCMP officer appears to reach out an arm which the reporter, who is not looking at the Mountie, then walks into.

Menzies says to the man: “What are you doing?” The officer grabs hold of Menzies, pushes him against a wall and shouts: “You’re under arrest for assault.”

Things like this, makes me wonder if Iran will give Canada another high five here.

Because Rebel dares to ask serious questions Trudeau & his ilk hate them. They've been charged multiple times & have won in court every time (unless the charges are dropped before hand). Its fascism at its best & more Canadians are supporting independent media because of this. The mainstream media lies & refuse to ask pertinent questions which is why independent media is so important. JMHO

So, there was so much happening in that video above, in such a short amount of time….that I totally missed this:
1704976735095.jpeg
1704976749405.jpeg
…Wait? What? Same RCMP Non-Uniformed Security Detail dude hiding behind the pole initially, assaulted the same Journalist…three years ago? Bit of a history here for motivation? Weird. Googled back to 2021…& found David Menzies actually getting assaulted by Walmart Employees body checking him while throwing water on him…
1704977423258.jpeg
Then being arrested (Menzies) for assault:
1704977559275.jpeg
But I’m not seeing Baldy McDoRight…& again thankfully there was a camera man filming everything so the false accusations (in spite of the attempt to block the cameraman) saved Menzies again…

Here’s this Menzies character on film getting assaulted before being arrested for assault:

Again, thankfully, there is no bias from the current government against this media organization. Falls into the category of. “Phew!” as they wiped the sweat off their brow?

Politicians have ’no role’ in police decisions

Freeland says politicians have no say in the operational decisions made by police -- and that is why she has nothing more to say about the arrest of a Rebel News personality.
OTTAWA — Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said Thursday she would not weigh in on the recent arrest of a Rebel News personality because politicians have no say in the operational decisions made by police.

David Menzies, a commentator for the online site, was arrested Monday by an RCMP officer providing security for Freeland while Menzies was trying to ask the minister questions outside an event in Richmond Hill, Ont.

A Rebel News video shows Menzies being told he was arrested for assault because he pushed into an officer. In the video, Menzies can be heard saying that the officer was the one who bumped into him.

York Regional Police said Menzies was released unconditionally after it was determined there was no credible security threat. The RCMP said it is “looking into the incident” and the actions of everyone involved.

On Thursday, Freeland told reporters that Canada is a rule of law country and a democracy.

“Operational decisions about law enforcement are taken by the police of jurisdiction,” she said at a news conference in Toronto.

“Quite appropriately, political elected officials have no role in the taking of those decisions and that’s why I don’t have any further comment.”

Menzies said in an interview that he believes he was arrested because the Liberals do not like his outlet or its questions.

“It was a very sad state of affairs and it deserves the global and viral coverage that it is getting,” he said.

Menzies has been arrested multiple times in interactions with both Liberal and Conservative politicians.

That includes a 2019 arrest in Whitby, Ont., during a campaign stop by former Conservative leader Andrew Scheer, who is now Opposition House leader. Menzies was arrested after multiple members of Scheer’s staff repeatedly asked him to leave and told him he was not welcome to attend the event.

At the time, Scheer told reporters that it was the Conservative party’s policy to not give interviews to Rebel News, saying his event was for accredited media only.

In July 2021 in Thornhill, Ont., Menzies was arrested at an event for Melissa Lantsman, who is now deputy leader of the Conservative party. She was the nominated Conservative candidate at the time.

Lantsman said in a press release following that episode that Menzies was asking her “homophobic” questions that related to her sexual orientation. She ultimately left the event because she felt unsafe, she said.

Rebel News said at the time that Menzies had not made any homophobic remarks and that he was arrested because of the questions he was asking about her work.

In most of those cases, Rebel News crowdfunded following the arrests for money to “save David Menzies.”

But Menzies said he did not set out to get arrested.

Menzies said his most recent arrest got the most attention because of social media.

“It was the biggest story in the world for a few hours at least,” he said.

Elon Musk, owner of social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, weighed in online, as did English personality Russell Brand who commented on the situation as a man in an “adorable fedora” being “slammed” by police.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also shared news of the arrest on his X account.

“This is the state of freedom of the press. In Canada. In 2024. After 8 years of Trudeau,” he posted above the video. In a followup post, Poilievre claimed Menzies was arrested for questioning a Liberal minister.

Poilievre did not respond to a request for comment. Neither did Lantsman or Scheer.

In Canada, journalistic speech is protected under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms and there are very few exemptions, such a libel and defamation, that limit what journalists can say and write.

Marilyn Gladu, the Conservative critic for civil liberties, pushed to have the arrest studied at the House of Commons heritage committee. It failed to get support from other parties.

Menzies said he does not think it’s hypocritical for the Conservatives to come to his defence despite him being arrested at their past events.

“This wasn’t Pierre Poilievre shutting down the process of journalism. So until he does it, I can’t complain about him or condemn him,” Menzies said.

Oh? I vaguely recall something about a parking situation in Ottawa about this time of year, but in years, gone by…
Freeland says politicians have no say in the operational decisions made by police -- and that is why she has nothing more to say about the arrest of a Rebel News personality.
Honk Honk…?
On Thursday, Freeland told reporters that Canada is a rule of law country and a democracy.
That sounds familiar when convenient…
“Quite appropriately, political elected officials have no role in the taking of those decisions and that’s why I don’t have any further comment.”
Freedom Convoy anyone?
In Canada, journalistic speech is protected under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
“So let me be perfectly clear….”

Even the CBC is questioning this one (with their own bias, but still questioning it). You know it’s screwed up when the CBC isn’t blindly cheerleading the Liberals.
Politician-to-English translation: I'm barely smart enough to stay the hell outta this one.
So…this is soooo…weeks ago. What other scandals and potential ethics violations and other shenanigans have pushed this from the forefront?? Well, several actually.

Maybe it’s just a communications issue though.

The cops dropped the charges. What's left to report?

Maybe if you're interested in journalists getting arrested and charged (I know you're not, but. . .) how 'bout this?

After assaulting the reporter, from what I understand they drop him off in the parking lot of a school several blocks away…And dropped the charges of being a reporter? Nothing to see here, move along?

Just read through your link, & it’s also deplorable behaviour by law enforcement.

“The brazen actions of the Edmonton Police Service are the latest example of a self-imposed ‘black eye’ in an ever-growing number of examples where law enforcement agencies in Canada have ignored, whether through ignorance or indifference, the invaluable role journalists play in a free and democratic society,” he said. “This pattern of behaviour must be stopped in its tracks.”

No, dropped the charges of assault. Being a reporter's not a crime, even in Canada, as I understand it.

And now the cops aren't talking. Does that surprise you? I'm not Canadian, but down here the Blue Wall of Silence is legendary.

All I can say is thankfully this was for a TV interview and not a radio interview. The saving grace was the cameraman.
No, dropped the charges of assault.
Was it ‘really’ assault? Was that why the charges of ‘assault’ where ‘dropped’? If there wasn’t a cameraman filming this, would the charges of ‘assault’ have been dropped minutes later?
Being a reporter's not a crime, even in Canada, as I understand it.
That’s the way it’s supposed to be for Mr Menzies & Mrs Morin.
And now the cops aren't talking.

Ditto.
