The UK is doing the same and Quebec is merely banning flavoured vapes, except of course nicotine flavour. The issue is mostly the flavours because it may attract children. In fact some years ago Camel had Deep Mint flavour and Mandarin Orange flavour cigarettes. The FDA shut those down because they were basically marketing smoking to kids with flavoured tobacco.
The things is, while smoking is really, really, really bad for you, vaping is only really, really bad for you, although many people have used vaping as a means to ultimately quit smoking altogether. On the flip side, it has been "encouraging" more young people to take it up with the myriad of flavours available.

The flavour thing is malarky. What attracted kids to tobacco/nicotine before flavours? The rich bold taste of Virginia's finest golden tobacco?

Wearing seatbelts while driving started out as a suggestion by the government, then became Law. No smoking in most public places started out as a suggestion...then became Law.

I believe in my lifetime, the microchipping of newborn babies will start out as a suggestion for 'safety reasons'...then will eventually become the Law...and then the government will track your every move from cradle to grave. Yup...1984. I really believe this will occur.

I guess we could also shut down meat inspection, food and drug safety, motor vehicle licensing, and air traffic control. To name a few.

Or make them work as was initially planned. I don't know how yurs works, but most of ours has become a haven for party hacks at the upper levels, and PC hiring at the lower levels.

So shut it all down. Go back to one Mountie per square forever.

There's a perfectly legitimate (and complicated and detailed) discussion to be had on the role and performance of government.

Sadly, it's always derailed by some knuckle-dragging moron shouting slogans and drenching his hearers in saliva.

Not quite. Manufacturers(Nash) first put them in (1949) long before Govt ever "suggested" use or made them a standard equipment (1966). Use became mandatory 14 years later in 1980.

I gotta agree it ain't the flavours.

I think most kids took up smoking because it looked cool, or because everyone else was - perhaps their parents were smokers too.

It wasn't because the smoke tasted good. I think it may have also been because smoke didn't taste all that good, even smoking the stronger harsher brands, made you look more the tough son of a bitch. Like downing really strong liquor and keeping a straight face kinda deal.

just tell kids flavours are for pussies; maybe they'll stop doing it.

:?)

the seatbelt law in Ontario was newly in effect when I would be dead if I had been wearing one. I sooooo wanted them to charge me for it!

they'll often cite when creating a law "if it saves one life..." and I'm like, "uh-uh, no, if it kills one life it's a bad law".

I don't deny they save lives say 95% of the time. It's the 5% it legislates to death or lifetime disfigurement/disability that I have a problem with.

Either way it's a gamble, and the choice should be the adult individual's, not the government's. Sure make the law apply to the under-aged, because the government should protect them from their parents' idiocy, and because they're not old enough to gamble.

Beats that Turkish shit. And nope, the flavour thing isn't malarky. In 2021 10% of Canadians said they smoked cigarettes. Smoking has been decreasing slowing but steadily in Canada. However between 2019 and 2021 the number of kids 16-19 that took up vaping, doubled.

It'll be interesting to see how many kids in Quebec continue vaping when the only "flavour" they can get is nicotine flavour.

I guess it's no surprise that kids nowadays are pussies.

One could easily say it all of a sudden became affordable. $10 for 15mls of vape juice that lasts a few days V's $18 for 20 of cigs gone in a day.

Then there is blending weed oil in with a flavoured juice as cover. It's better to get caught with a nic vape at school than it is to be caught with a joint.
