VANCOUVER — Loretta Rogers, the matriarch of the Rogers family and long-time director at telecom giant Rogers Communications Inc., has died at the age of 83.

Her daughter Martha Rogers confirmed her death in a tweet issued on Saturday, calling her mother a “beautiful soul” who “possessed an incredible strength of character.”

Loretta Rogers was the widow of company founder Ted Rogers, who died in 2008, and served as a director on the corporate board.

She was one of several family members at the centre of a struggle for control of the company last fall that began when her son Edward Rogers, the company’s chair, attempted to oust its chief executive.

She and two of her daughters who are also board members opposed the move, saying they went against the company’s governance practices.

But Edward Rogers went ahead with his plans after a B.C. Court affirmed his right to do so.

Woman eaten by 20 cats after dropping dead at home

A woman in Russia was eaten by nearly two dozen pet cats after she collapsed and died in her home.

Police went to the woman’s home after receiving a call from a concerned co-worker and were horrified to discover her partially eaten remains – along with 20 hungry cats.

Authorities believe she had been dead for two weeks.

The unidentified woman, who lived in the Bataysk, Rostov region of Russia, worked as a cat breeder and kept the 20 Maine Coon pedigree felines on the property.

Some of the cats have since been rehomed to new owners for about $50 each, while an animal rescue expert took in the rest of the big cats normally known for their passive nature.

“The cats were left alone on their own for two weeks, there was no food, so what else to eat?” the expert told local media, according to the U.K. Sun.

“It’s understandable right? They ate what was there.”

Edward Lake, father of children killed by drunk driver, takes own life
Author of the article:postmedia News

Edward Lake, whose three children and father-in-law were killed in a horrific crash in Vaughan due to a drunk driver in 2015, has taken his own life.

The lifeless body of Lake was discovered by a Peel Regional Police on Charters Rd. in Brampton Monday.

He had been released from Peel Police custody in the morning following an overnight incarceration, sources say, which was the result of a mental health order and an incident at his home where a Taser was used by police on Father’s Day.

Police were called to the home a second time in 24 hours by his wife, Jennifer — who had expressed concern over his actions in the backyard. Sources say that tactical officers were deployed to the home out of concern over potential threat capability.

Sources say the security cameras in the home had been turned off.

“Those on the call are very upset because of the respect for that family,” said one officer. “The only thing that people are clinging to is at least that man is out of pain.”

Lake and his wife Jennifer Neville-Lake were left distraught and heartbroken following the crash, which claimed the lives of nine-year-old Daniel, five-year-old brother Harrison, and two-year-old sister Milly, along with her 65-year-old father Gary Neville. Injured were Neville-Lake’s mother and grandmother.

In 2016, Marco Muzzo was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to four counts of impaired driving causing death and two of impaired driving causing bodily harm.

He was released Feb. 9, 2021 on full parole and, after serving two-thirds of his reduced sentence of nine years and four months. His mandatory release was Saturday.

On Sunday, Neville-Lake shared a photo of the children’s gravesite on social media.

“Father’s Day 2022. This shouldn’t be real. It can’t be,” she wrote.

She also shared her heartbreak on the day Muzzo was granted his full release.

“My multiple life sentences will never end.”

SAC CITY, Iowa — An Iowa woman is facing criminal charges after more than 1,000 pigs were found dead on a property.

KCCI-TV reports that the Sac County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call Thursday and found the animals dead at two confinement sites. Authorities say 33-year-old Elana Laber was responsible for maintaining the sites.

The sheriff’s office said the pigs had been dead for at least a week and had no access to food or water.

Laber is charged with two counts of first-degree criminal mischief and two counts of livestock neglect. It wasn’t immediately clear if she has an attorney.

31 bodies, some decomposing, found at Indiana funeral home

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — Police are investigating after more than 30 bodies, some decomposing, were found inside a southern Indiana funeral home.

Police in the Louisville suburb of Jeffersonville responded to Lankford Funeral Home and Family Center on Friday evening and found 31 bodies, including some “in the advanced stages of decomposition,” Maj. Isaac Parker said.

He said the county coroner’s office had reported a strong odor emanating from the building. Inside, officers wearing hazmat gear found bodies “in different places around the building.” Some of the bodies had been at the funeral home since March, Parker said. Police also found the cremated remains of 16 people.

“It was a very unpleasant scene,” Parker said. “The conditions were not good.”

The owner of the funeral home has been speaking with police since Friday, Parker said, and an investigation is ongoing.

The owner did not immediately respond to an email from the Associated Press seeking comment Sunday.

The remains were taken to the Clark County Coroner’s Office for identification, and police asked anyone who may have information to contact the coroner’s office.

A woman who sent her brother’s body to the funeral home for cremation after he died in April told WHAS-TV that she is still waiting for his remains. Tara Owen said when she reached out to the funeral director, he responded that he was “dealing with a lot at the moment.”

Monty Norman, composer of James Bond theme, dies at 94
Author of the article:Associated Press

Publishing date:Jul 11, 2022 • 15 hours ago • 1 minute read • Join the conversation

LONDON — Monty Norman, a British composer who wrote the theme tune for the James Bond films, has died. He was 94.

A statement posted Monday on Norman’s official website said: “It is with sadness we share the news that Monty Norman died on 11th July 2022 after a short illness.”

Born Monty Noserovitch to Jewish parents in the East End of London in 1928, Norman got his first guitar when he was 16. He performed with big bands and in a variety double act with comedian Benny Hill before writing songs for early British rockers Cliff Richard and Tommy Steele and composing for stage musicals including “Make Me an Offer,” “Expresso Bongo,” “Songbook” and “Poppy.”

Norman was hired by producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli to compose a theme for the first James Bond film, “Dr. No,” released in 1962.

He drew on a piece he had written for a proposed musical adaptation of V.S. Naipaul’s “A House for Mr. Biswas,” shifting the key riff from sitar to electric guitar. The result — twangy, propulsive, menacing — has been used in all 25 Bond thrillers.

Producers hired composer John Barry to rearrange the theme, and Barry was widely assumed to have written it — to Norman’s chagrin. Barry, who died in 2011, went on to compose scores for almost a dozen Bond films, including “Goldfinger” and “You Only Live Twice.”

Norman went to court to assert his authorship, suing the Sunday Times newspaper for libel over a 1997 article asserting the theme was composed by Barry. He won in 2001 and was awarded 30,000 pounds in damages.

HONG KONG — An An, the world’s oldest male giant panda under human care, was euthanized on Thursday at age 35, the equivalent of 105 years for humans, said the Hong Kong theme park where he lived.

An An’s health had showed steady signs of deterioration over the past few weeks, with his food intake declining, until he finally stopped eating, said Ocean Park, the marine and animal facility where he had lived since 1999.

An An and Jia Jia, the world’s oldest female giant panda, who died in 2016 at 38 years, were gifts from the Chinese government.

“Ocean Park is deeply saddened to announce the loss of An An,” it said in a statement.

The park said it was thankful for the opportunity to take care of Jia Jia and An An as it helped Ocean Park become an important base for panda conservation.

“An An is an indispensable member of our family and has grown together with the Park. He has also built a strong bond of friendship with locals and tourists alike.”

Ocean Park, which displays animals including walruses, penguins and dolphins, now has two giant pandas, Ying Ying and Le Le.

China gave the female Ying Ying and male Le Le to Hong Kong in 2007. The park has been hoping that the pair could have babies but they have not so far.

Nichelle Nichols, Lt. Uhura on ‘Star Trek,’ has died at 89
Author of the article:Associated Press
Publishing date:Jul 31, 2022 • 10 hours ago • 1 minute read • 16 Comments

Nichelle Nichols, who gained fame as communications officer Lt. Uhura on the original Star Trek television series, has died at the age of 89.

Her son Kyle Johnson said Nichols died Saturday in Silver City, N.M.

“Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration,” Johnson wrote on her official Facebook page Sunday. “Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.”

Her role in the 1966-69 series as Lt. Uhura earned Nichols a lifelong position of honour with the series’ rabid fans, known as Trekkers and Trekkies. It also earned her accolades for breaking stereotypes that had limited Black women to acting roles as servants and included an interracial onscreen kiss with co-star William Shatner that was unheard of at the time.

She often recalled how the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was a fan of the show and praised her role and personally encouraged her to stay with the series.

Like other original cast members, Nichols also appeared in six big-screen spinoffs starting in 1979 with Star Trek: The Motion Picture and frequented Star Trek fan conventions. She also served for many years as a NASA recruiter, helping bring minorities and women into the astronaut corps.

More recently, she had a recurring role on television’s Heroes, playing the great-aunt of a young boy with mystical powers.
