It won't work if Alberta tries to go it alone. It will work when it is the entire western half of the country. This would also end Ottawa's ban on drilling off the BC coast. We could easily be as rich as any OPEC country.
The lower mainland (Vancouver/Surrey/etc) would have to break away and become a semi autonomous independent colony (like Hong Kong was) for a while before China takes it over….but Western Canada could work around it to the North.

…& to think America was nervous about having Cuba off its coast for so many decades…this would be a shit-show!!

I was kind of hoping we could not invite the lower mainland and Victoria areas to our new country.

I'm surprised Trudeau hasn't pulled an America and sold them (harbours) off to China yet.
Some of them sort of are. Somehow there are foreign companies in control of the operations. I never pursued it far enough to find out exactly how it works. Rio Tinto runs the Kitamat Port. Even has a customs office and secure area for freight.

That is a "free trade" thing with the US.

Unfortunate that the best port is controlled by the worst people. Pr. Rupert is a good port. There are other areas on the coast that could be developed for ports as well.

List of Canada Port Authorities

From: Transport Canada
From Transport Canada
Canada Port Authorities (CPA) operate at arm’s length from the federal government. CPAs are governed by a board of directors chosen by port users and the municipal, provincial and federal government.
CPAs:
  • set the business direction and make commercial decisions for the port
  • set their own fees (for example, berthage and wharfage fees) but such fees must be fair
  • are responsible for maintaining and dredging commercial shipping channels
  • act as landlords, leasing their port operations to private operators
As set out in the Canada Marine Act, the CPAs must be financially self-sufficient. They don’t receive federal funding to meet operating costs or deficits. CPAs finance their capital projects using their own revenues. But they can also partner with the private sector, borrow from a commercial lender or apply for certain federal grants related to infrastructure, the environment or security.
