WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Maria Butina, accused in the United States of spying for Russia, had wider high-level contacts in Washington than previously known, taking part in 2015 meetings between a visiting Russian official and two senior U.S. officials.
The meetings, disclosed by several people familiar with the sessions and a report prepared by a Washington think tank that arranged them, involved Stanley Fischer, then Federal Reserve vice chairman, and Nathan Sheets, then Treasury undersecretary for international affairs.
Butina traveled to the United States in April 2015 with Alexander Torshin, then the Russian Central Bank deputy governor, and they took part in separate meetings with Fischer and Sheets to discuss U.S.-Russian economic relations during Democratic former President Barack Obama’s administration.

Former U.S. vice presidential wannabe Sarah Palin and her husband Todd have split after 31 years of marriage.
Todd filed for divorce from the ex-Alaska Governor on Friday, citing “incompatibility of temperament between the parties”, according to the Anchorage Daily News.
Todd is seeking joint custody of the former couple’s youngest child Trigg. Their other four kids are all adults.
Republican Sarah was elected as Governor of Alaska in 2006. She joined late Senator John McCain’s ticket as vice president.
The pair lost to Barack Obama and Joe Biden in 2008.

Sarah Palin is demanding their debts and assets be “divided equally,” according to court documents obtained by RadarOnline.com.
As readers know the commercial fisherman filed for divorce in Anchorage Superior Court on Friday, Sept. 6 from one-time vice-presidential candidate, after 31 years of marriage.
Todd, 55, asked to dissolve the marriage from former Alaska governor, also 55, citing an “incompatibility of temperament between the parties such that they find it impossible to live together as husband and wife,” according to the documents obtained exclusively by Radar.
The filing asks for joint legal custody of their only minor child together, Trig.
Sarah Palin can pursue defamation case against NY Times
In a weird twist, Todd’s lawyer, Kimberlee Colbo, is the same lawyer who represented daughter Bristol’s ex Dakota Meyer during their divorce proceedings.
Colbo asked the court that the divorce remain confidential as it moves forward, the filing states.
Sarah was elected governor of Alaska in 2006 but resigned in 2009.
The filing was reported only under the couple’s initials.
Radar confirmed Sarah has not yet responded to the filing.
