Roman soldiers came from all over the Empire in a backwater like Judea, they weren't likely from Rome.

Jesus wasn't "meek and mild." He wasn't a mascot for the conservative political/religious party of his day. He was a freaking rabble-rouser, a social justice warrior. That's why the Romans executed him at the request of the Sannehedrin. They didn't have time for his shit. He threw the moneychangers out of the temple in a fit of righteous indignation. He told the religious leaders, the Franklin Grahams and Jerry Fallwells of his day, that they were a generation of snakes and that their souls were like whitewashed tombs full of dead men's bones, attractive on the outside but full of rot and decay. He fed the hungry and hung out with drunks and prostitutes.
Jesus was dangerously loving and a tremendous threat to the conservative institutions of his time. His true teachings are always revolutionary and always threatening to the status quo. That's why we never hear them anymore.

Actually, they don't. They only think they know. And what people read about Jesus varies depending on the type of Christianity you follow.

If you trust those same people to be truthful about Jesus' life, I've a bridge to sell you and a million dollars to give away, first come, first served.
Don't forget all of the other gospels that were suppressed by the Roman/Imperium (that became the Roman Catholic Church). They dumbed down the sacred texts of Christianity at Nicea for their own political gain.
