When I was in Hong Kong, I found a very conflicted society from conversations I had.

On the one hand, they accept that the UK never should have forced the opium trade on China and annexed Hong Kong in the first place. On the other, they are very greatful for what the UK has done for Hong Kong.

On the one hand, I do not trust the Communist Party and certainly do not want to become integrated in a Communist-Party-led state. On the other, they do dream of someday seeing China reunited.

That's a lot to sort out in the Hong Kong identity. But then, I guess Hong Kong's unique history is precisely what makes it unique.

Also, something which you won't hear the Chinese admit, was that the Opium Wars - which also saw the French allied with the British - started because of Chinese refusal to buy British goods even though the British readily brought Chinese goods. Smuggling opium into China was a way of achieving this:

The roots of the Opium War (or First China War) lay in a trade dispute between the British and the Chinese Qing Dynasty. By the start of the 19th century, the trade in Chinese goods such as tea, silks and porcelain was extremely lucrative for British merchants. The problem was that the Chinese would not buy British products in return. They would only sell their goods in exchange for silver, and as a result large amounts of silver were leaving Britain.

In order to stop this, the East India Company and other British merchants began to smuggle Indian opium into China illegally, for which they demanded payment in silver. This was then used to buy tea and other goods. By 1839, opium sales to China paid for the entire tea trade.


The Chinese, contrary to modern believe perpetuated by the Chinese, had no opium problem in their country. It was regularly prescribed and used for medicinal purposes. What they objected to was trade, and would have fought the British even had the British been smuggling tea into China:


The Chinese wanted to stop the trade. Although opium was valued as a medicine that could ease pain, assist sleep and reduce stress, by 1840 there were millions of addicts in the country. Illegal opium imports were also eroding what had once been a favourable balance of trade.

Chinese efforts to end the trade were initially successful. In May 1839 they forced the British Chief Superintendent of Trade in China, Charles Elliott, to hand over the stocks of opium at Canton for destruction. This outraged the British, and was the incident that sparked conflict.
Opening up China

Relations were already strained by the hostile attitude adopted by Chinese officials in negotiations with the British. The Chinese were suspicious and refused to enter into full diplomatic relations. This was because British officials had shocked the Chinese by refusing to kow-tow before the Emperor in accordance with protocol.

The British believed the Chinese had always been uncooperative, having allowed only one port, Canton, to be used by western merchants since the 18th century. There were many British politicians and merchants who viewed the dispute as an ideal opportunity to open up China.
Naval engagements

After several skirmishes, fighting began in November 1839. HMS ‘Volage’ and HMS ‘Hyacinth’ defeated 29 Chinese vessels during the evacuation of British refugees from Canton.

On 21 June the following year, a naval force commanded by Commodore Sir Gordon Bremer arrived off Macao. It then moved north to Chusan and on 5 July bombarded the port of Ting-hai, which was then occupied by troops under Brigadier-General George Burrell.

On April 29, the Cultural Action Party published a blog post on its website titled "Trudeau Govt Hand $465 Million To Afghanistan, Funds Disappear." Since its original publication, the story has been posted to dozens of Facebook groups and garnered more than 20,000 interactions, according to the social media monitoring site CrowdTangle.

Weeks later, it continues to be shared.

Although the figure of $465 million is partially correct, most of the other assertions in the piece are incorrect or misleading.

Between 2001 and 2018, the government of Canada sent $3.24 billion in foreign aid to Afghanistan for reconstruction and stabilization efforts, according to Global Affairs Canada. That total figure includes $465 million announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a 2016 NATO summit.

However, the blog post goes on to allege that the money has disappeared, citing a report from an unnamed "government oversight agency."

In fact, the report was from an American agency and only looked at U.S. aid to Afghanistan. The report states that approximately one-third of U.S. aid to Afghanistan has been squandered due to "waste, fraud and abuse."

(Since Yankees are taking the lead in Afghanistan and Cdns are following along it stands to reason Cdns would have SIMILAR EXPERIENCES??)

Canada ended its more than 12 years of military involvement with U.S.-led war in Afghanistan in 2014, but remains tied to the Mideast country through foreign aid and development programs.

The Chinese perpetuate the myth today that opium addiction was a serious problem in their country, blighting health and lives. But it wasn't the case. It had huge health benefits. In fact, contrary to what the Chinese say today and what many people subsequently believe, there was no "opium plague" in China:

Another element of the opium myth is the refusal to accept that most of its consumption in Europe, the Middle East and Asia was rarely problematic. The existence of a class of occasional, intermittent, light and moderate users was one of the most controversial issues in the opium debate in the late nineteenth century. Yet there is abundant evidence that many users only resorted to the paste on special occasions. To take an example from nineteenth-century China, the official He Yongqing exclusively smoked opium to treat diarrhoea, while countless others smoked no more than a dozen grams a year strictly for medical purposes. Many were intermittent smokers, drifting in and out of narcotic culture according to their personal and social requirements. Many people would smoke a pipe or two at popular festivals and religious ceremonies several times a year without ever becoming regular users.

But most of all opium was a medical panacea. The main reason for smoking opium in China was to reduce pain, fight fever, stop diarrhoea and suppress a cough. The lowering of the cost of opium in the nineteenth century allowed ordinary people to relieve the symptoms of endemic diseases such as dysentery, cholera and malaria and to cope with fatigue, hunger and cold. Nothing was more effective than opium in treating pain. Even with the gradual spread of more modern medical facilities in the first half of the twentieth century, opium often remained the cornerstone of self-medication in the absence of effective and affordable alternatives. There are millions of individuals who suffer from chronic and debilitating pain in Europe today, never mind China a century ago, and they are rarely offered adequate treatment, as medical science has yet to discover a drug capable of matching the analgesic qualities of opium.

Also, something which you won't hear the Chinese admit, was that the Opium Wars - which also saw the French allied with the British - started because of Chinese refusal to buy British goods even though the British readily brought Chinese goods. Smuggling opium into China was a way of achieving this:
The roots of the Opium War (or First China War) lay in a trade dispute between the British and the Chinese Qing Dynasty. By the start of the 19th century, the trade in Chinese goods such as tea, silks and porcelain was extremely lucrative for British merchants. The problem was that the Chinese would not buy British products in return. They would only sell their goods in exchange for silver, and as a result large amounts of silver were leaving Britain.
In order to stop this, the East India Company and other British merchants began to smuggle Indian opium into China illegally, for which they demanded payment in silver. This was then used to buy tea and other goods. By 1839, opium sales to China paid for the entire tea trade.
The Chinese, contrary to modern believe perpetuated by the Chinese, had no opium problem in their country. It was regularly prescribed and used for medicinal purposes. What they objected to was trade, and would have fought the British even had the British been smuggling tea into China:
The Chinese wanted to stop the trade. Although opium was valued as a medicine that could ease pain, assist sleep and reduce stress, by 1840 there were millions of addicts in the country. Illegal opium imports were also eroding what had once been a favourable balance of trade.
Chinese efforts to end the trade were initially successful. In May 1839 they forced the British Chief Superintendent of Trade in China, Charles Elliott, to hand over the stocks of opium at Canton for destruction. This outraged the British, and was the incident that sparked conflict.
Opening up China
Relations were already strained by the hostile attitude adopted by Chinese officials in negotiations with the British. The Chinese were suspicious and refused to enter into full diplomatic relations. This was because British officials had shocked the Chinese by refusing to kow-tow before the Emperor in accordance with protocol.
The British believed the Chinese had always been uncooperative, having allowed only one port, Canton, to be used by western merchants since the 18th century. There were many British politicians and merchants who viewed the dispute as an ideal opportunity to open up China.
Naval engagements
After several skirmishes, fighting began in November 1839. HMS ‘Volage’ and HMS ‘Hyacinth’ defeated 29 Chinese vessels during the evacuation of British refugees from Canton.
On 21 June the following year, a naval force commanded by Commodore Sir Gordon Bremer arrived off Macao. It then moved north to Chusan and on 5 July bombarded the port of Ting-hai, which was then occupied by troops under Brigadier-General George Burrell.

When I got an operation on my tongue a few years ago and was prescribed pain medication, my first question was whether he'd prescribed an opiod or anything addictive. He informed me that it wasn't an opiod and though potentially addictive, only mildly so as long as I follow the instructions and not take the pills when not necessary.

I ended up taking far less than prescribed and only as required. Only a fool thinks himself immune to addiction.

Opium was used in China to treat bronchitis, tuberculosis and other respiratory illnesses. Today we make morphine out of it. Britain is a large producer of opium today.
