I belong to another forum that us the utter opposite and decorum at all times is a must. It is far less caustic than this one

Please tell me, what forum is that? The only one I know of is about horticulture and doubtless there are others devoted to hobbies or technical subjects. I haven't found one where there is civil and/or moderated discussion of a general nature.

This is an unusual forum in that it is totally unregulated. This is is the Wild West complete with authentic gun fighters. Debate is often difficult but it has it's entertaining aspects. I belong to another forum that us the utter opposite and decorum at all times is a must. It is far less caustic than this one but it is also stifled in a sort of Puritan way.
Anyway, forget it Jake. It's only the Internet.
Yeah, I was on that one, but they banned me when I ate my entree with the salad fork.

I approach the forum with the intention & hope that discussion will be rational & friendly; about issues, not people. This is often not the case. I can get sucked into responding to silly arguments, insults and general vindictiveness but I'd rather not. I didn't come here to form impressions of people, but hoping to enjoy some interesting discussions.

Any impressions I have formed are based on what people say and some are repugnant to me, as I apparently am to them. Most of those are on my ignore list. Others may be less consistent, and mix coherent thoughtful content with other kinds of post which I'd prefer, but sometimes fail, to ignore.

I hear you. I think the best way is just to sit back and watch for awhile. You soon see a hundred modus operandis- some are to be ignored and the rest you can let set the rules. You've likely noticed I can be the nicest guy in the world or I can be utterly impossible. I'd rather be nice BUT if I'm not it's no skin off my nose and I'll survive! :)

I try not to put people on ignore until I'm pretty sure they're unlikely to say much that's neither hostile, personally insulting nor just completely stupid.

I see only one thing wrong with this forum. The rules list a whole shit load of stuff that won't be tolerated and then they are tolerated! I for one don't need help in handling assholes. I just can't provide a nice ambience. :)

Here's my thread on my ignore list.

I have two categories of ig listers - the ones who post massive amounts of garage , and the passive (or otherwise) aggressives

without the ignore list the threads are too difficult to follow but over time I have managed to allow more and more PA's out to play. I can handle 5 or 6 idiots but not 12 or 15 of them.

And there's no point in having them all loose anyway because they are generally speaking interchangeable.

One white nationalist climate change denier is pretty much like another.

I got into a bit of trouble with them a few years back when I posted photos of hideously mutilated civilian corpses in the Ukraine, just after the recent Russian invasion, in response to some bizarre bit of "by jingo" on that forum. It seems that the reality of actual warfare is not suitable material for armchair generals.

Of course not. To them, wars are fought by Vinnie from Brooklyn, Jethro from Arkansas, Saul the Jewish kid, Oliver the rich kid who joined up against his daddy's wishes, and the tough-but-understanding Sarge chewing on a cigar butt.

That's really all it takes, as long as they got the devil-may-care, screw-the-rules Mustang working out his daddy issues in a plane overhead.

Gawd help us if the real thing occurs in North America, again. It's been a long time since we saw our loved ones lying dead on the ground.

Try this one

It has been through a few iterations over the years but the core of it goes back to an old MSN site.
