just ask google, New york is no where near your (red)neck of the woods so clearly you are sharing someone else's opinion instead of your own.
Hey Bondo........................why dont you and Comrade Curious discuss something serious..........................
like how LIE-berals are trying to destroy the lives of ordinary people with their LIES???????????????????????
Here is an article seeking to sell a LIE-beral point of view that is not accepted by the general public! With some comments of my own in brackets):
Why walkable cities are good for the economy, according to a city planner
People spend more money when cities are less vehicle-oriented.

(LIE-berals just LOVE that phrase “spend more money”! As if your income will MAGICALLY jump by 25 percent if you dump the car”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
You’ve probably seen the term “walkability” thrown around in relation to cities, neighborhoods, and even apartments. A city’s walkability, per Walk Score, is determined by analyzing how many errands can be done without a car, and cities with the highest scores -like Boston, New York, and San Francisco- often come with an incredibly steep cost of living.
The National Association of City Transportation (NACTO)’s executive director, Linda Bailey, says that in years past, the national city planning standard addressed people walking as an afterthought, which is why NACTO builds design guides to direct cities on how to become more pedestrian-friendly. Guides outline a number of transformations including how to turn a heavy-traffic two-way street into a “neighborhood main street” with bike lanes, sidewalks, and greenery.
(TOO bad NACTO DOES NOT explain what happens to all the traffic deliberately diverted from the area! But restaurant owners on Toronto King St CAN tell us that when you divert traffic- you also divert BUSINESS AWAY!!!!!!!!!! )
Cities that have been notably increasing their walkability include Washington, DC, and Seattle, where city planners started dedicating space on the edges of roads to pedestrians and calling them “walkways” as opposed to sidewalks.
(Oh yes- a name change will make a HUGE difference surely?????????????)
One of the biggest reasons many cities aren’t walkable is because land is dissected into “uses,” something called “single-use zoning”: Retail cannot be next to a medical office cannot be next a single-family home cannot be next to a multi-family home. So in order for a person to get lunch, go to the doctor, and then buy a birthday present, they have to travel to three different “zones,” and can only do so efficiently by car.
(There is a load of crap! One has only to look at the number of dentist and other doctor offices on the second floor of shopping malls! YES! In order to get maximum use of the shopping mall- many owners have retail on ground floor and offices above! As for retail and doctor offices being near single family homes- that stands to reason- separating kids from heavy traffic and delivery vehicles sounds WISE to most parents!)
(There is also the issue of cost and convenience for snow clearing and tax assessing! Different types of land use generate different real estate tax rates for LIE-berals and Hogs! And main streets get snow clearing and pot hole repairing priority over residential streets since our LIE-beral overlords seek to save on gravy by ignoring side streets till LATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
This may have been helpful in the 19th century when homes needed to be far away from factories emitting toxic fumes, but today it makes less sense. The solution: Cities should adopt regulations that allow land to be multi-use, such as in the mixed-use developments that dot the sprawling landscape of many American suburbs and cities.
(In Toronto recently a cabinet maker was ordered evicted from his warehouse space- which had Condos built over top of it- with the fumes from the latex paint he was using filtering into the condos and offending one sensitive nosed tenant- resulting in a complaint to by law officers! Adherence to zoning restrictions enures minimal friction among property owners and other users!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(And the more densely we are packed- the higher the friction! Sadly- LIE-berals are hell bent on packing us in like Sardines simply so they can save on gravy! We need less roads and less new transit if we are packed tightly! We can operate with existing fire halls and snow clearing equipment if city growth is restricted! The need for new roads to serve new subdivisions is curtailed if we restrict growth!!! All manner of govt services do not need expansion of the city population is packed TIGHT!!!!!!!!!!)
In Plano, Texas, the Legacy Town Center features shops, apartments, a movie theater, and restaurants in a pedestrian-friendly smattering of urbanism. The city of Tampa is constructing Water Street Tampa — a $3 billion development that will include shops, entertainment, residences, and offices.
(Gosh! Shops, apartments, movie theatre and restaurant all in one SPACE? Sounds like the 40 year old mall at Young and Bloor in Toronto- the one with the 60 storey tower in the centre- with apartments, hotel and offices in it - and a subway stop in the basement -handy to the stores and restaurants!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Bailey says mixed-use developments are attractive to developers because they present an opportunity to experience what it could have been like to plan a city 50 or 80 years ago. “Really, they’re trying to recreate what cities like Philadelphia have always had,” she says. With a walk score of 79, Philly is the fifth most walkable city in America.
(There is a load of LIE-beral propaganda! Blue collar labour was ALWAYS segregated away! Nobody wants to smell fumes from paint manufacturers nor wheeze in the odours from a slaughter house! That LIE-berals have already FORCED such business out of the city - or even out of the country is simply illustrating the long term damage that has been done to our economy by having a TOO CLOSE neighbour whining to a LIE-beral!!!!!!!!!!)
(The Ontari-owe Greenwood Mushroom farm has been FORCED to MOVE several times as subdivisions build up aeround it and the complaints from RESIDENTS over the odour come flooding in to govt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Other steps in Speck’s book include pushing for local parks and schools, both of which foster community and ownership of a neighborhood. He also says that cities need to invest in attainable housing downtown so they don’t get overrun with the wealthy.
(Speck is deliberately IGNORING the reality that parents DO NOT want to rear their kids on gritty down town streets where hookers and drug addicts may be most often found! Our news media is full of stories of outraged people griping about the homeless shelters springing up in their formerly decent neighbourhoods!)
(LIE-beral social and immigration policy is a crippling MESS that is enraging voters! NOBODY wants to be packed in next to a homeless shelter with a horde of out of control “clients”! Nor do parents want their kids packed in with a bunch of illegals at school!!!!!!!!!!)
“An extreme example of wealth in walkable cities is this kind of jack-o’-lantern effect, where many homes are owned by people who own five homes and if they are distributing their time between these homes evenly, most of the time a house is empty, so you get this weird condition of the extremely dense ghost town, which is the worst,” Speck says.
(Speck is again IGNORING REALITY! Cdn news media has documented the amount of organized crime cash that is being put into real estate speculation in Canada! Virtually the only people who own 5 houses in Canada are the ones consorting with CRIMINALS! In Ontari-owe- only 10 percent of people own a second home - meaning a “recreational property” - usually on a lake some place-and the HUGE MAJORITY of this class of property owner are CIVIL SERVICE UNION HOGS- over paid and under worked, with solid gold pensions that are crippling our economy!! Those who own 5 homes STOLE the necessary cash!!!!!)
(Even worse- Statistics Canada tells us that people living down town often have LARGER carbon foot prints than suburban dwellers since the urbanites burn so much energy cooling and lighting their concrete heat sink condo towers and they burn so much fossil fuel fleeing the concrete canyons on weekends and holidays! In addition a condo tower requires vast amounts of steel and concrete and fossil fuel to construct but a suburban house Can be built mostly with renewable wood framing!!!!!!)
There are also more simple tasks like reallocating road space to accommodate bikes or creating street parking so people can drive to a city, park, and then walk around and enjoy. “Restriping a too-fast street to include a bike lane, or turning a row of parallel parking spaces into angled parking, these things can be done for the price of paint,” Speck tells Vox. “If a street needs resurfacing anyway as part of its regular maintenance, the changes can be done for free.”
(Well yes- but again Speck IS AVOIDING any discussion of WHERE the obstructed traffic will go after the “traffic calming measures are implemented! For several decades now- the number of commuters LEAVING Toronto for work in the surrounding suburbs has EXCEEDED the number of commuters coming into the city!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(LIE-berals have deplored the increasing income disparity in Toronto - with LIE-berals IGNORING the evolution of the city into masses of civil servants and govt
leaders in enclaves next to not so “affordable housing” that is full of the down and out, the aged and the sick!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(Ordinary, average people tend to live in the suburbs where their kids will be safer- away from homeless shelters and the guns and gangs that infest affordable housing! The suburban kid also benefits from local adherence to zoning bylaws that ensure that heavy trucks have no business on residential streets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(The concept of a walkable city sounds good till you realize it is being driven by LIE-beral govt greed! Their focus is on saving gravy for THEMSELVES! And they do not care about the lives of ordinary people who get screwed in the process!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
