I think the divide is there. The big difference is that Canadian conservatives tend to be less socially conservative than their US cousins. Only social conservatives would accept Trump’s brand of socialism. Trump’s view on free trade is pretty similar to Ed Broadbent’s. There are social conservatives in Canada but they’re mostly seniors and will be dead soon. Most Canadian conservatives are fiscally conservative and socially liberal. The federal election would be a slam dunk for Sheer if he understood that and muzzled the nutters. I have no faith that that will happen.
No, Canada has a great, big political middle and there is a solid consensus among most Canadians of what is right and wrong. The Very Left and the Very Right are both in marginal fringes and neither of them can gain any power nationally without heading for the middle. If you're a believer in really left wing or really right wing ideas, you probably think yourself to be a righteous truth keeper but most Canadians will see right through you.
