In the Army, they were known as "FOOs" or Forward Observation Officers and it was one of the most dangerous things that Canadian soldiers did.

There have always been well paying positions available to x-military, especially if you lived outside the US. 'Soldier of fortune' was the term after WWII. West Point or equal is entry level schooling.

When Pearl Harbour was attacked, 10,000 American "mercenaries" were already serving in Canada's forces. The came here and enlisted to fight Nazi Germany when the USA was a
neutral on the sidelines.

The same thing happened for the same reason in WWI.

Canada was at war with Germany for a full 1/10th of the 20th Century. Our neighbours for only half that time ...

All those mercenaries ...
