The original pipeline was constructed in 1953 and purchased by Kinder Morgan Canada in 2005. It was designed to carry conventional crude oil but recently has been carrying the heavy oil, diluted bitumen (dilbit), from the Alberta tar sands to tankers in Vancouver harbour.

Killing the pipeline to the Pacific sea coast is so disadvantageous to Canada and do advantageous to the US that you have to wonder if American provocateurs (from the oil industry? government?) are at work, here. Canada is a slave to exports of oil to the US and they get it from us at bargain-basenent prices. No one in the United States wants to see us selling "their" oil to the Pacific Rim.
I absolutely believe that the key organizers in the protests are paid shells of U.S. oil marketers to keep the crude coming through their fingers in the States, the rest of the financing is coming from major environmental organizations reimbursed by our own government through different grants.
