John McCain's death is a metaphor for the death of the old Republican PartyLike all heroes, the Arizona senator and ex-POW had his flaws. But the GOP 'maverick' served as a beacon in a troubling time: Our view

THE EDITORIAL BOARD, USA TODAY*

John McCain: An American icon

Senator John McCain devoted his life to serving our country.

USA TODAY

Sadly, his death serves as an almost perfect metaphor for the death of the old Republican Party, the one personified in the past 100-plus years by the likes of Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan. It was a party that believed, like McCain, that the United States should stand for the advance of freedom abroad and the rule of law at home. It was confident that American commerce could compete with anyone, and that immigration was essential to a growing nation.

In remarkably short order, that party*has been turned into a Donald Trump cheering section. It has adopted Trump’s previously un-Republican positions on trade, immigration and authoritarianism, while enabling his childish outbursts and ethical outrages.

In short, many in today’s GOP are*woefully lacking in character and pragmatism, the very McCain hallmarks that made him such an invaluable senator and statesman. To say he will be missed hardly conveys the void his passing leaves. He had the gravity to serve as a beacon in a troubling time, to remind his country and his party of genuine American greatness.

We need more leaders to show us true north. McCain left us a shining example worth following.

In Stunning Reversal, Michael Cohen's Attorney Backpedals On Trump-Russia Claims

The Washington Post reported on Sunday that Davis said in an interview that he is "no longer certain about claims he made to reporters on background and on the record in recent weeks about what Cohen knows about Trump's awareness of the Russian efforts."

Davis told The Washington Post that he cannot confirm media reports that Cohen is prepared to tell special counsel Robert S. Mueller III that Trump had advance knowledge of the 2016 Trump Tower meeting -WaPo

CNN reported in July that Cohen claimed to have witnessed Trump approving the meeting between Trump Jr. and Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya, arranged by an associate of opposition research firm Fusion GPS.

The day after CNN's report, the Washington Post - using an "anonymous source" they now admit was Davis, peddled the same story that "Cohen had told associates that he witnessed an exchange in which Trump Jr. told his father about an upcoming gathering in which he expected to get information about Clinton," however the Post didn't say Trump Jr. told Sr. it was the Russians.

“I should have been more clear — including with you — that I could not independently confirm what happened,” Davis said, adding perhaps the most difficult four words for an attorney to utter: "I regret my error."

The night Trump got elected, I thought, "Wow, the next four years are going to be entertaining, better pop up some microwave popcorn!" I didn't picture him going Full Retard on a Global Level though....and this isn't just entertaining any longer. This dude is beyond beyond, & I hope America comes to their senses before the next election and that there's some kind of real choice beyond this egotistical bafoon.

Powerful article. Spot on. Don't think anyone can honestly say that the current regime even resembles the "traditional" GOP. Perhaps this new trumpian version is the new version of it....and one that the Trumpanese want.

The question is: Isn't this new version a devolved version...
