Retired firefighter sues Halifax fire services, alleging racial discrimination

HALIFAX — A retired firefighter in Nova Scotia is suing Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, saying he was ridiculed and passed over for a position because of his race.
Court documents show George Cromwell of Dartmouth, N.S., filed a notice of action on July 24, which included a statement of claim detailing numerous alleged incidents dating back to the late 1990s.
Cromwell said he was denied a position in his station’s rescue unit despite his qualifications because he is black.
After extracting a body from a fatal car wreck in the late 1990s, the statement of claim reads, his captain asked him to apply to a newly created rescue unit within the King Street Station in downtown Dartmouth, where he worked at the time.
He said the day after he applied, he checked in with a platoon chief, who said his application had been “shuffled aside.”
“I was the most decorated firefighter in HRM, the first firefighter qualified in Dartmouth to use the Jaws of Life, and yet I was treated with disrespect due to my race,” Cromwell wrote.
He was later forced to transfer to another station in Halifax, the documents said.
In another incident at the King Street Station, Cromwell wrote he returned from a vacation with a large moustache and was told by his captain that he could keep it as long as he was able to put his mask on properly to ensure safety. Cromwell said the captain was satisfied that he could.
Over the next few weeks, he alleged he was “continuously harassed” and embarrassed in front of the crew by his superiors because of his moustache, noting that a white firefighter worked in another station with similar facial hair.
Cromwell also outlined instances where he believes his life and the lives of his coworkers were put at risk, alleging his superiors once sent them inside a burning building without adequate support.
He wrote he made numerous complaints to the city over the years.
“To this day, I still have not been provided with any evidence or documents to suggest that my concerns were investigated by the city,” read his statement of claim.
Cromwell is seeking $200,000 in lost earnings, saying he would likely still be working or at least earning a more substantial pension had he gotten the position he said he was wrongfully denied.
None of these allegations have been proven in court and Cromwell could not be reached for comment.
Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency spokesman Phil McNulty confirmed they recieved Cromwell’s notice of action last week.
In an interview Sunday, he said the issue has been forwarded to Halifax’s solicitors, the people who handle legal issues on behalf of the city.
“The fire service, at this stage of the game, is awaiting direction from legal services and we can’t comment on matters that are currently before the court,” he said.
“All I can say is I worked with Mr. Cromwell for a number of years — over two decades — so I’m aware of him, and I’m aware of some of the concerns that he has.”
This isn’t the first time the city has been accused of discrimination.
Last December, firefighter Liane Tessier recieved an official apology from Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency chief Ken Stuebing, after she said her concerns about systemic gender discrimination within the department were ignored by the municipality for over a decade.
Halifax bus mechanic Arthur Maddox was terminated a couple of months ago after a Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission board of inquiry decision found his workplace behaviour to be “disrespectful, aggressive and racist.”
The complaint about racism at the transit yard was filed with the provincial human rights commission 12 years ago, in July 2006.
And in May, a group of African Nova Scotian city employees demanded action on a confidential report from two years ago that found racism in the workplace.
At the time, Raymond Sheppard, a spokesman for the group, told reporters that “the anti-black racism and discrimination within HRM is at 1950s levels.”

The Canadian economy unexpectedly shed jobs in April on the back of a drop in part-time positions and declines in the construction and trade sectors, data from Statistics Canada showed on Friday.
(This is a natural response thanks to LIE-beral policy making which has crippled the housing industry which was one of our few active industries! In addition, LIE-berals have crippled what is left of our auto industry with their Trump trade war as they DELIBERATELY IGNORE Yankee worries over national security issues! The decline of 1,100 jobs was well short of economists' forecasts for an increase of 17,400. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.8 percent, as expected. The participation rate edged down to 65.4 percent from 65.5 percent, though the total size of the labor force increased.

A woman has been charged with assault after allegedly flinging racial slurs at a young woman and flicking a lighter towards her, Peel Regional Police said Monday.
The alleged incident happened Sunday evening at a bus shelter in Mississauga.
“Police are calling this hate-motivated because of what was said at the scene,” Const. Danny Marttini said.
Police said another woman attempted to intervene, and the accused allegedly attacked her and tried to remove her hijab.
Investigators are hoping that alleged victim will come forward, Marttini said.
“We’re really hoping that either somebody knows (something) or that the victim sees this or hears about it and then comes into contact with us so we can make sure that they’re OK,” she said.
Marttini also said police are also trying to get security footage in the area.
The accused, 35-year-old Sandra Alexander, of Mississauga, has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault and uttering threats to cause bodily harm, police said.
She is scheduled to appear in court at the end of August.

TORONTO — The union representing Ontario’s college faculty has launched a charter challenge of legislation that ended a five-week strike and allowed 500,000 students to return to class.
The president of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union says the back-to-work legislation introduced by the Liberal government, and supported by the opposition Progressive Conservatives, violated workers’ rights.
(Violated worker rights the union Hog whines? HAHAHA! ALL genuinely democratic govts long ago decided that business organizations that have a monopoly on an essential service should be regulated much more carefully than any other legitimate business. WE can easily see that OPSEU workers DO HAVE a monopoly on education in this province as over 75 percent of jobs on offer here REQUIRE post secondary education as proof of ability! Want to work in Ontariowe then you better jump through the OPSEU HOOPS! In November, when the legislation was passed, the union vowed to challenge it in the courts. It filed the necessary documentation Tuesday.
The union is now demanding that the collective agreement awarded through arbitration be deemed to have expired and that it and College Employer Council, which represents the province’s colleges, return to the bargaining table.
In December, an arbitrator gave the province’s 12,000 college faculty members a 7.75 per cent raise over four years.

The arbitrator’s decision also included new language on academic freedom, which had been the main outstanding issue between faculty and the colleges.

The union said it “will now allow faculty to speak freely about academic issues without fear of reprisal.” The colleges, meanwhile, said the academic freedom section enshrines in a contract the policies that already exist at most colleges.

The new contract also included improved job security for partial-load and full-time faculty and a new government-run task force that will make recommendations on faculty complement, precarious work, college funding, student success, and governance issues, OPSEU said.

Hundreds of thousands of students were kept from class during the strike in the fall, and about 27,500 of the roughly 250,000 full-time students decided to withdraw and receive a tuition refund rather than finishing their semester on a condensed timeline.
(And of course those hundreds of thousands of students will STILL end up massively in debt as they struggle to find valid employment in our economy that has been so badly debauched by LIE-beral vote buying madness in support of OPSEU GREED!)

The newly-minted voice of the TTC Seth Rogen should have found “a better way.”
Instead, the Vancouver-born actor, comedian and director is doing an about face and apologizing after blackface was used on the stand-in for a child star in his new movie, Good Boys.
“I should start by saying this shouldn’t have happened, and I’m terribly sorry it did. I won’t give excuses for why it happened,” Rogen said in a statement to Fox News.
“I’ll just say that as soon I was made aware of it, I ensured we put an end to it – and I give my word that on any project my team and I are involved in, we will take every precaution to make sure something similar does not take place again. I’m engaging in conversations to make sure I find the best way to do that. It’s on me to be proactive. Reacting isn’t enough.”

Rogen was hammered with backlash earlier this week after the stand-in for Keith L. Williams, 12, was smeared with darker makeup to more closely resemble the star, according to the Daily Mail.
The boy — slimmer than Williams — also had to wear a fat suit and afro wig.
TMZ reports that someone on the movie set complained.
Also lashing out was the rapper Common who slammed the use of blackface. He told reporters that Rogen should have foreseen the minefield he was walking into.
“Even trying to paint somebody darker to fit somebody else, I mean –what sense does that make?” Common said. “I’m not with it at all.”

The 19th century burial ground was established by Richard Allen, a freed slave who founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Its existence had been forgotten until a historian began researching the site about a decade ago.

The newly-minted voice of the TTC Seth Rogen should have found “a better way.”
Instead, the Vancouver-born actor, comedian and director is doing an about face and apologizing after blackface was used on the stand-in for a child star in his new movie, Good Boys.
“I should start by saying this shouldn’t have happened, and I’m terribly sorry it did. I won’t give excuses for why it happened,” Rogen said in a statement to Fox News.
“I’ll just say that as soon I was made aware of it, I ensured we put an end to it – and I give my word that on any project my team and I are involved in, we will take every precaution to make sure something similar does not take place again. I’m engaging in conversations to make sure I find the best way to do that. It’s on me to be proactive. Reacting isn’t enough.”

Rogen was hammered with backlash earlier this week after the stand-in for Keith L. Williams, 12, was smeared with darker makeup to more closely resemble the star, according to the Daily Mail.
The boy — slimmer than Williams — also had to wear a fat suit and afro wig.
TMZ reports that someone on the movie set complained.
Also lashing out was the rapper Common who slammed the use of blackface. He told reporters that Rogen should have foreseen the minefield he was walking into.
“Even trying to paint somebody darker to fit somebody else, I mean –what sense does that make?” Common said. “I’m not with it at all.”

Common added: “Painting somebody darker? Come on man, it’s 2018. When is that ever acceptable. If I am a black person on that set, I’m offended. And even honestly, I think a white person should be able to step up and say this ain’t appropriate — it should feel uncomfortable. There should be white and black people standing up for when you see some bulls— going on.”
The TTC made much of naming the 36-year-old Freaks and Geeks star as the transit system’s voice but his blackface faux pas may change their minds.

When I read the latest scheme by Toronto District School Board director John Malloy to enhance equity in the board’s schools and classrooms, I got really angry.
I got angry because his 27-page plan — passed by the equally out-of-touch- and I dare say out-to-lunch- trustees on the priorities and planning committee Wednesday night — seems hell-bent on turning the board’s schools into healing centres instead of venues for encouraging academic excellence.
To be frank, I am glad I have no children in TDSB schools and I feel tremendously sorry for the vast majority of teachers who just want to do their jobs without being lectured about their alleged biases.
(Actually I suggest that modern teachers DO see it as their job to fight things like “white privilege”! Civil service union Hog management is now so divorced from the reality of ordinary life that they demand that any new union member MUST support LIE-beral values- and without such support one CANNOT get a Hog job! Hence the ever stronger left leanings of our education system- it is a creeping political coup intended to destroy what Pierre Trudeau called “Cdn Imperialism”- but ordinary Cdns consider that imperialism to be the foundation for responsible govt and true and honest democracy!)
(Pierre Trudeau heaped fawning praise on Chinese Chairman Mao for “his genius in rushing 30 million Chinese to the gallows” during “The Great Leap Forward! And Our idiot Boy Justin tells us “he likes the way the Chinese get things done”! The Trudeau`s are NOT people to turn to for a strong defence of democracy or capitalism!)
Malloy’s plan is the next step following the release of the $163,850 Enhancing Equity Task Force recommendations in mid-December.
At Wednesday’s priorities and planning committee, Malloy — in his traditional holier-than-thou style — told the crowd, nope insisted, that it was not his intention to “adopt a one-sized-fits-all model” in TDSB classrooms. He was of course, referring to the gifted and other specialized programs that will not be phased out, at least for now given the outcry from parents at the mere suggestion.
He also said they intend to look at “each and every student” — particularly those labelled as marginalized and racialized — and ensure they all have “access and opportunities.”
(Uh- huh- and those students who don’t fit the union model are placed in- meaning ABANDONED in- special education classes until such time as they reach an age where they can be safely disposed of!)
I hate to inform him but those two points aren’t mutually exclusive, especially given limited financial resources.
(The number of kids needing special education and not getting it is soaring! For reasons LIE-berals DO NOT want to discuss!)
But on to why the report made me particularly angry.
It goes well beyond phasing out streaming- into applied versus academic courses- in Grades 9 and 10 — a recipe, I believe, for dumbing down the curriculum and mediocrity in the classroom.
(LIE-berals are desperate to COVER UP just how badly some immigrant groups- selected by LIE-berals in hope of buying their votes so LIE-berals can cling to power at any price- are doing in Canada! Some ethnic groups think that doing well in school is equal to shamelessly selling out to white society! And as we have seen- a significant number of certain social groups believe that jobs like pimp, drug dealer, and dealer in stolen property are viable career options! LIE-beral policy is now so twisted they think it is racist to have so many ethnic minorities in jail- even though it is certain minorities committing most of the crime!)
What is really troubling is how much Malloy’s plan blames or excuses oppression, racism and marginalization for a lack of academic achievement and equally, how much he intends to pander to the marginalized to the point of, I suspect, compromising school safety.
(How is it that Asians do so well in school while some other ethnic groups do so badly? They all go to the same schools- but PARENTAL ATTITUDE IS CRITICAL to kid success- and some ethnic groups have a CRAP ATTITUDE that cripples them!)
For instance, if I were a TDSB employee I would find it highly offensive that Malloy feels all TDSB staff (teachers and principals included) are innately biased and need, as he puts it, “professional learning” in equity, anti-oppression, anti-racism, human rights and get this, indigenous education.
(Yes- how twisted must LIE-beral thinking have become that they believe insulting us as racists will get them re-elected! How can LIE-berals encourage fair dealing in society by smearing all white people as “systemic racists”?)
“All staff will be asked to identify their own power, bias and privilege to better assist them in their support of students who are most under served,” he writes in the section on professional learning.
For heaven’s sake. You can’t make this stuff up.
(AS I have said- our civil service union Hog management is becoming dictatorial and have gained so much control that Hog jobs are now ONLY GIVEN to those who strongly hold LIE-beral values! This is a creeping political coup!)
Malloy told me in an e-mailed response Thursday that anti-oppression training is “not more important” than professional development in literacy and numeracy; however it will apply to all staff.
On the safety front, we all know Malloy and the out-to-lunch TDSB trustees have already axed their School Resource Officer (SRO) program — despite research by their own board and a subsequent study in Peel that both showed it was widely supported and made students, teachers and parents feel safer.
My hair nearly stood on end when I read that he proposes decreasing suspensions and expulsions for bad behaviour in schools because, as he reports, racialized (black and Indigenous) students are highly overrepresented in suspension and expulsion data.
(In other propaganda news- school trustees tell us violent incidents in our schools have dropped sharply in recent months but they do not tell us if it is because kids are suddenly better behaved or because of the lack of cop witnesses to count such incidents HONESTLY! Teachers happily “forget” to record incidents on a regular basis! One only has to think back to cops investigating the murder of drug dealer and student Jordan Manners at C.W. Jefferies school - were the cops uncovered a serious sexual assault that teachers never bothered to report! In related news- in early 2018- Durham Region trustees voted NOT to tell parents how often their kids were evacuated from class on an emergency basis due to violent events by other students!)
Malloy suggests that instead TDSB staff “need to understand why inappropriate behaviour occurs and the messages students are communicating through their actions.”
(Uh- huh! Some students are acting out their contempt for white society and the idiot trustees DO NOT want to discuss this ugly matter!)
See note about healing centres above. If Malloy has his way the inmates will truly be running the asylum.
Asked whether that means a marginalized (black or visible minority) student who brings a knife or gun to school will no longer be suspended, he responded “not at all” noting that there continues to be circumstances laid out under the Education Act requiring suspensions.
(Its just that we- the public will NEVER hear about any of the vile choices LIE-berals make as they seek to buy votes at any price! Privacy for the convenience of our LIE-beral overlords is PARAMOUNT! And LIE-berals DO NOT CARE if our kids end up ill- educated in their school system as they buy votes! LIE-berals have turned our education system into a LIE-beral propaganda machine promoting their polices- educating your kids is a LONG WAY BACK in priority!)
He also claimed that the schools are safe (even without SROs) because of their staff and would be even safer when students “are engaged and feel they belong.”
Okay then.
(Our teachers have been operating for many years on a specific instruction- that if they see kids fighting they are to stand aside till the fight ends and then render first aid to the losers- there is to be NO teacher intervention in the fight- for fear that teachers might also be injured!)
I’d laugh at the inanity of it all if it weren’t for the thought that these educrats and trustees have responsibility for young minds.
