Democratic women win big in key Virginia House primaries

Washington (CNN) — The year of women continues.

In the four Virginia competitive US House races in November, female candidates have all won the Democratic nominations, the latest example of the party turning to women to unseat vulnerable Republicans in the President Donald Trump era.

On Tuesday, three women -- Elaine Luria, Abigail Spanberger and Jennifer Wexton -- won Democratic primaries. Earlier this year at the party convention, journalist Leslie Cockburn won the nomination in Virginia's 5th Congressional District.

There are currently no Democratic women in Virginia's 11-seat congressional delegation.

Luria, a veteran, won the primary in Virginia's 2nd Congressional District, setting up a match with Republican Scott Taylor, and Spanberger, a former CIA operative, won her primary in Virginia's 7th Congressional District. State Sen. Wexton bested five other Democrats to win her primary in Virginia's 10th Congressional District, setting up a face-off with vulnerable Republican Rep. Barbara Comstock.

Comstock is the only woman representing Virginia in Congress.

"Women have been leading the resistance, leading in activism and come November they will lead the way in Democrats taking back the House," said Christina Reynolds, top strategist for Emily's List, a Democratic organization that recruits and funds Democratic women to run for office who support abortion rights. "Virginia is a key part of that effort and EMILY's List is proud to stand with the women running in these targeted races."

A record number of Democratic women have filed to run for Congress since Trump stepped into the White House, with many telling CNN they chose to run in response to his presidency.

To date, 476 women have filed to run for the House in 2018, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, surpassing the 272 who filed in 2016.

After last week's primaries in California, Alabama, Iowa and other states, 114 women have won their primary elections. And 45 are on Tuesday's ballots.

I would not classify it as an uprising, but more of the natural evolution of society. Women are now much better educated than they used to be and currently most university positions are occupied by women. Better education and a greater awareness of how society works should lead to women taking an increasingly active role.

Yes, someone who can invent air filled ice creme that costs more with less inside is just what the world needs more of right now...
;)
...oooops, less of.

Yeah, well when you have effe all for policy except higher taxes, less jobs (especially for the minorities you really hate like blacks ), unusable health care (except in congress, etc), and more war, I suppose running boobs are all you have left.

The so-called "Woman Uprising" happened years ago. Golda Meir. Benazir Bhutto. Corazon Aquino. Margaret Thatcher. Kim Campbell. Angela Merkel.

So, we've had a female leader of a state at war, a Muslim state, a nuclear power, and an economic superpower.

And you're still waiting for an uprising?

Mental, your problem is that you're just as extreme, just as hysterical, as the dumbest-ass MAGAhead in the world (think Salty Walty). The fact that it's at the opposite end of the spectrum don't make it better.

Nikki Hailey will be the first female POTUS ;)

Sadly, she'd be a huge step down from Nancy Landon Kassenbaum or Jeanne Kirkpatrick.

Ann Richards woulda been great!

But in all likelihood, it'll be Oprah Winfrey. What more do we need to do to make you understand that we don't give a shit about qualifications, intelligence, or even sanity?

I'm happy more women are entering politics and hope we eventually have a female majority in Canada's Parliament and senate and every province some day so they can even change the constitution if they want to. That way feminists won't be able to just blame men for everything anymore.

Cat fights galore.

I doubt it: even most women wouldn't vote for a feminist. So even if the majority of voters voted for women, the majority of women in Parliament still wouldn't be feminists.

I think the same applies to men too. I've voted for female candidates before and, given how one that I'd voted for was NDP, she might even have been a feminist. I can guarantee you though that I'd voted for her in spite of her possibly being a feminist, not because of it.

Women were better off when they stayed at home in droves and took care of the Community.

Now THAT was power baby. Now most women are stuck in low-paying retail or caregiver jobs which they have to do to make ends meet. The Uber-Feminists helped a handful of career-driven women, but ultimately screwed over the majority.

Yeah, retreat into cheap insults.

Seriously, is there any difference between you and Salty Walty? I mean, aside from the fact that you appear to be able to recognize when you can't keep up?
