So I shouldn’t be surprised that the equity warriors at Social Justice U don’t want the spotlight cast on their three days of white-shaming, otherwise known as Canada’s first White Privilege Conference.
That conference, hosted by Ryerson University’s office of the v-p of equity and community inclusion, kicked off Wednesday evening with a keynote address from OISE associate professor Rinaldo Walcott, who is part of the Faculty for Palestine and has supported the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign.
On April 10, I asked the director of communications in the office of the v-p of equity, if I could attend the conference. She responded that I was certainly welcome to attend and asked me to “circle back” a few days before the conference.
After all, why wouldn’t Ryerson’s organizers allow media to attend since they promote themselves as “proudly diverse and intentionally inclusive.”
But when I circled back, I was informed that all media were being asked not to attend so that delegates can engage in honest, critical conversations in a safe space.
Frankly, however, after I spoke Wednesday with Darrell Bowden, one of Ryerson’s organizers of the conference, I was left with little insight into why the conference participants need to be protected in a safe space — especially since Ryerson is a publicly-funded institution and many of their donors are (to use their words) privileged white people.
Bowden told me the conference is about giving delegates an “opportunity to be heard” and opening conversations that are often put off to the side.
“We’re attempting to create a space for folks who have typically been hurt to open up where dialogue might occur … we’re trying to create discussion not debate,” said Bowden, who described himself as a seventh-generation, black-aboriginal cis-gendered gay male from Nova Scotia.

“It’s a chance to have an open dialogue about things that happen in our society and have an opportunity to engage with one another on some things that are uncomfortable,” he reiterated more than once.
When I suggested to him that the name of the conference was inflammatory and the topic divisive — not inclusive — he seemed to completely miss the point and challeged me as to who was more oppressed, him or me. (Oy vey.)
He insisted the conference was not about white-bashing but then in another breath, reiterated that “white privilege” does exist in our society.
Intersectionality. White privilege. Cis gendered. Safe space.
For heaven’s sake, these equity warriors really do speak in tongues.
When I asked Bowden whether he condoned the involvement of two of the conference presenters — Adrien Wing (an Iowa professor who once called for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission on Palestine/Israel) and Walcott — given their anti-Israel bias, Bowden raised the “academic freedom” card.
Never mind the safe space for open dialogue. I’m willing to bet the equity warriors don’t want media covering the conference because it will be a three-day indoctrination session replete with angry white-(mostly male) bashing and repeated whining about victimization and oppression.
In some small way, I’m glad my white-privileged gay Jewish self is not welcome.
These people give me an oppression headache.
