And that number comes from?

Just a figure I read somewhere when I was training guards.

Actually, I did a little research, and my number was low.........an 8.169 average between 2005 and 2011, 5,831 of which were armoured truck guards.

Who may carry handguns in Canada? | CBC News

I seem to recall some years ago bismuth being discussed among shooters as an alternative to lead....
Whatever became of that?
Trying to discuss anything with the ijit who posted before me is useless

Yeah, bismuth is used in shot, and has something like 86% of the density of lead. And it works well, from all reports, although it has been replaced largely by Hevishot, which is actually denser than lead. It is made with tungsten, nickel and iron.

Now the problems. Both are much more expensive than lead.

Hevishot is so hard that it can not be used in barrels unless they are rated for steel shot.

And while both work well as shot, they are both much too brittle to be used in expanding bullets for rifles.

There are other alternatives for larger bore rifles.....pure copper being one. It can be designed to expand and hold together, making it deadly. But it is expensive, and light. That means the weight of the bullet is limited, and the bullets have to be long, requiring a quicker twist in the barrel to stabilize them in flight. Rifles with a slower twist intended for lead bullets have some accuracy problems.

This is even more of a problem with small bore rifles, which require a heavy, soft material to weight the bullet enough so that it retains energy at range.

And this simply does not work in handguns of reasonable bore size, as you can't get the weight in an acceptable sized projectile.

Lead is still the answer, and the only rational answer for small bore rifles and handguns.

I don't understand what you mean.

The simple fact is that lead fired into a rural environment or on a range does little if any real damage to anything.

The anti-lead movement is simply another attack on shooters.

But give us an alternative, and we'll go along.

Tell you what, when they find a cheap alternative for police/military firearms, I'm on board.

Until then, they can **** off.

Lead ammo sprinkled around the earth is estimated to kill 100,000 birds a year.

I know this will astound you but when you fire a gun the bullet does not just go away. It does not cease to exist.

Where does lead come from?

And 100,000 is a tiny number worldwide..........especially as most of that would be waterfowl in places where it is still legal to use lead over wetlands. That has been banned in Canada for decades.

The rest would be raptors scavenging offal or dead never recovered animals.

But raptors are undergoing a population resurgence here. 40 years ago I rarely saw one, outside of the occasional small hawk. Then bald eagles came back with a vengence. In the past five years I've seen snowy owls, great horned owls, numerous hawks, and bald eagles beyond counting.

It is BS, pure and simple.

Walk through a ditch of a somrwhat busy highway and count how many lead wheel weights you find per km.

And how many times exactly have you used it for that purpose?

Does your question also include protecting livestock and pets? I had to shoot a Bear once that was tearing at the wall trying to (possibly) get into the house. More recently a month ago my Dad shot a Timber wolf chasing the dog down the driveway. Always protecting livestock from predators, never had to raise a weapon against 2 legged predators (human, Sasquatch, etc.) yet though.

We don’t have bears in the city , unless you live below a mountain as in N. Vancouver or Coquitlam , they get both bears and cougars . Don’t worry the conservation officer with his rifle are only hours away .

Lots in Coquitlam. I walked into the house to grab a lemonade while waiting on friend. A minute later the friend I was waiting for was honking like mad.

I went out the door and scared the shit out a black bear as equally as it did me.

Lots of browns in NE SK. They love to eat the oats.

Wonder if it was anything to do not using lead shot on water fowl?

Of course the 100,000 birds is strictly not very many or completely false. Either one. Or both.

NRA to host an event featuring Vice Prezzy Pence and possibly even an appearance by Prezzy Shot for brains himself.

Also in effect for the event?

Gun Ban.

Don't be bringing any guns to the event hosted by the NRA in a state where they arranged for open carry.

And even when it doesn't make sense it makes sense because more guns.

my rifle has a 1in grouping at 100 meters. Into an 8in kill zone I haven't missed in 38 years.

my shotgun has been shooting steel shot since the early 90s. I miss all this time....well, not quite.

Lead shot is not used in Canada anymore, hasn't been for years.
