Of what use is a compelled apology? As far as I know, judges don't force even convicted murderers to apologize for their crimes since such an apology would be meaningless anyway. Sure we can sue for reparations, and we might be able to force an insincere apology, but is that what we really want?
If people sued the Church for financial compensation, they might win and I'd support that. But there is just no point in forcing an insincere apology.
