Model Amena Khan has cancelled her L’Oreal deal just days after making history as the first hijab-wearing woman to front a U.K. hair campaign.
The Muslim beauty took to Instagram on Monday and expressed “regret” over a series of tweets she posted in 2014, which were widely criticized as having “anti-Israel” sentiment.
“I… sincerely apologize for the upset and hurt that they have caused,” she shared of the since-deleted messages.
“Championing diversity is one of my passions, I don’t discriminate against anyone. I have chosen to delete them (tweets) as they do not represent the message of harmony that I stand for.”
Claiming her controversial posts are “detracting from the positive and inclusive sentiment” behind the L’Oreal Paris Elvive World of Care Campaign, she announced: “With deep regret, I’ve decided to step down…”
L’Oreal bosses released their own statement announcing, “We have recently been made aware of a series of tweets posted in 2014 by Amena Kahn, who was featured in a U.K. advertising campaign.
“We appreciate that Amena has since apologised for the content of these tweets and the offence they have caused. L’Oreal Paris is committed to tolerance and respect towards all people. We agree with her decision to step down from the campaign.”
Amena’s ads for L’Oreal product The Pink One launched last week.
The three tweets in question, screenshots of which have been circulating on social media, include comments such as, “Well, under international law, Israel is an illegal state”, and “Israel = Pharoah (Egyptian king). Both are child murderers.”
Amena also posted a message directed at Channel 4 presenter Jon Snow regarding a TV report he fronted, writing: “Your ‘children of Gaza’ piece was incredibly moving. Israel is a sinister state & the one who suffer most are innocent children (sic).”

PORTLAND, Maine — A northern Maine town manager who espoused white separatist views was fired on Tuesday and is getting $30,000 for agreeing not to sue the town.
The selectmen in the rural town of Jackman announced the decision after a closed-door executive session with Tom Kawczynski, the town’s top administrator since June.
Kawczynski has made comments bashing Islam and called for the preservation of white European heritage in northern New England. He also operates a website that touts racial segregation, describes itself as the internet home of a pro-white group and states that it’s time to “admit America was built by white Christian men.”
Kawczynski told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he’s unabashedly pro-white, but he feels his views have been mischaracterized. He vowed to continue making the case for what he called “white civil rights.”
“I, in conjunction with the Selectboard, agreed to a settlement to remove the good people of Jackman from the unwanted scrutiny, but I do not surrender my right to express my First Amendment rights,” Kawczynski said. “Including the right to have controversial opinions.”
Social media users have been calling for Kawczynski to quit or be fired. A post on the Jackman-Moose River Region Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page stated that members of the local business community don’t share his views and called on the selectmen “to do what is needed.”
Kawczynski was paid $49,000 annually, and the town said he is getting $30,000 in severance. He said he signed an agreement to the severance package stipulating that he will not sue.
Elected officials in the town voted unanimously to fire him on Tuesday morning. The town said in a statement that its selectmen and Kawczynski have “agreed on the details of ending” his employment.
Kawczynski served as town chair in Lisbon, New Hampshire, for President Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign. He told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he had no official role in the campaign, but was a proud supporter of the Republican president because of his pledge to “take care of the American people first.”
Heidi Beirich, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project, said the organization is aware of the New Albion group promoted by Kawczynski, his group and his website. Kawczynski said the group has about 100 members and holds regular meetings in Maine and New Hampshire. Beirich said he should have stepped down before having to be fired.
“It’s unacceptable to see people in leadership positions espousing white nationalist views,” Beirich said.
Located along a stretch of road Mainers sometimes call “Moose Alley,” Jackman is a town of less than 900 people, nearly all of them white , near northwestern Maine’s border with Quebec, about 170 miles (275 kilometres) north of Portland. On its website , the town describes itself as a “tourist friendly region,” and some residents have said they feared the controversy over Kawczynski’s views could keep people away.
The town’s statement said elected officials intend to “move forward to do what is necessary to sustain a vibrant, welcoming tourist community such as Jackman.”

Should Jan. 29 be set aside to combat Islamophobia?
That day — tomorrow — is the first anniversary of the mass murder at the Islamic Cultural Centre in Quebec City. Six Muslims were killed in this hate crime.
Muslim, Jewish and Christian leaders in Canada would like to take a stand against intolerance and see Jan. 29th declared a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Islamophobia.
A recent Forum Poll suggests that many Canadians are against this.
Forum Research polled 1,408 Canadian voters and found half (49%) disapproved of designating such a day. Almost 40% disapproved strongly.

Approval came from only 17% of those polled; strong approval was noted among 7%.
The same number — 7% — say they don’t know, while fully a quarter (26%) neither approve nor disapprove.
So who is on the nay side? That would be older, wealthier men living in the Prairies or Alberta, half with university degrees and 69% of whom support the Conservative party.
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (R) wipes a tear as he stands beside Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard during funeral services for three of the victims of the deadly shooting at the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, February 2, 2017. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday attended the funeral of two Algerians and a Tunisian man killed with three others in a mosque shooting, as he seeks to pull together a nation shaken by the hate crime. Up to 5,000 mourners were expected to pack a hockey arena in Montreal’s Olympic park for the funeral, while millions across Canada watch it on television.
Those who approve a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Islamophobia are aged 34 or younger and support the Liberals or the NDP. They are also the least wealthy (26%).
The question asked was: Would you approve or disapprove of a national day of remembrance and action on Islamophobia?
Results based on the total sample are considered accurate +/- 3%, 19 times out of 20.

India has 63 million 'missing' women and 21 million unwanted girls, government says

The Indian government said Monday that there were more than 63 million women “missing” from its population, and that 2 million go “missing” across age groups every year due to abortion of female fetuses, disease, neglect and inadequate nutrition. There are also 21 million unwanted girls, the government said.
The 2017-2018 estimate, released as part of the country’s annual economic survey, reinforced the work of researchers and social scientists, who have argued that decades of son preference in India and its parallel in China, the One Child policy, have produced a man-made demographic bubble of excess males – those now under 25 top 50 million – in the two countries and may have long-term impacts on crime, human trafficking, the overall savings rate and the ability of these excess males to find brides.
“We know that the sex ratio in India is highly skewed,” the government’s chief economic adviser, Arvind Subramanian, said at a news event Monday, noting that the study further showed that Indians have a “meta” son preference, which means that if they have girls, they’ll keep on having children until they get a boy. This has led to an estimated 21 million “unwanted” girls in India, who often get less nourishment and schooling than their brothers.
The study, looking at numbers for 2015-2016, showed that the sex ratio for different states in India worsened even as incomes improved; sociologists have long argued that India’s son preference not only occurs in poor rural families but also in middle and upper-middle classes, where tradition dictates a son will carry on the family business or inherit property, though legally, a daughter can do so, too. In the northern farming states of Punjab and Haryana, for example, the sex ratio among infants to 6 year olds is 1,200 males per 1,000 females, even though they are among the wealthiest states.
“Perhaps the area where Indian society – and this goes beyond governments to civil society, communities, and households – needs to reflect on the most is what might be called ‘son preference’ where development is not proving to be an antidote,” the survey suggested.
The survey – which was given a pink cover as a nod to women’s empowerment – said that the country has made improvements in most overall gender indicators as the country’s wealth has grown, meaning women have better education and have greater agency over purchases and other decision-making in their households.
Yet the percentage of those working has declined over time, from 36 percent of women being employed outside the home, to 24 percent in 2015-2016, largely because rising incomes of men have allowed wives to withdraw from the labor force and focus on child-rearing.
