Mark Hamill on Luke Skywalker’s upcoming return; 'It’s just the calm before the storm'
Jake Coyle, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
First posted: Wednesday, August 30, 2017 02:26 PM EDT | Updated: Wednesday, August 30, 2017 02:45 PM EDT
NEW YORK — When we last saw Mark Hamill in the “Star Wars” saga, he was a mysterious hooded figure on a jagged, remote island off the coast of Ireland.
“For a cameo that brief, boy did they make me work,” Hamill jokes.
But in “The Last Jedi,” which Disney will release Dec. 15, Hamill plays a much larger role. “Star Wars” will buzz again — 34 years later — with its original hero. Luke Skywalker is back.
In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Hamill spoke by phone from Malibu, California. “It’s just the calm before the storm,” he said. “With something like this, it’s almost too high-profile for comfort.”
Hamill, though, is a veteran. He’s been living with the glare of “Star Wars” for a long time. “The movie had such an impact, you thought: Oh my gosh, I already know what the first line in my obituary is going to be,” he said. “Which is odd and eeiry.”
Having briefly served as a copyboy at the AP’s Los Angeles bureau while a college student, Hamill introduced himself as “a fellow AP employee.” Jedi masters, it turns out, hail from the most unexpected corners of the universe.
AP: Do you ever reflect on how much your life changed by a simple audition for a funny-sounding science-fiction adventure more than four decades ago?
Hamill: The thing is, they got it down to two sets of three: a Han, a Luke and a Leia. There were three other actors, and then Carrie, Harrison and myself. And there was never a mix or a match. You go with one team or another. It’s just weird. I did a TV series called “The Texas Wheelers,” which I thought at the time was really groundbreaking. We got cancelled so quickly, but if that had been a success, I wouldn’t have been able to do “Star Wars.” Fate is a funny thing. Who knew?
AP: After all these years, how did it feel to be Luke again?
Hamill: A thing that felt maybe wrong about coming back was the fact that the original trilogy had a beginning, a middle and an end. But there’s two ways of looking at that. On the one hand, it had closure. But if you look at it another way, it’s the story of how Luke went from becoming a farm boy to a Jedi and then the story ends. It would be like telling the story of how James Bond got his license to kill and became 007, and the story ends.
AP: So you had some hesitation?
Hamill: When they asked me to come back, it was scary. I thought, “Gee, it was hard to catch lightning in a bottle the first time. I don’t know if this is such a wise idea.” When we left, even if they were going to do a third trilogy, it wouldn’t have anything to do with us. George (Lucas) never said you’re going to do three more. He did mention maybe coming back and doing a cameo and handing Excalibur to the next young hope. This is back when we were doing the first one and I thought, “What is this supposed to be?”
AP: Did this feel like a different Luke to you? It sounds as though this is a darker version of the character that may be unfamiliar to fans and even to you.
Hamill: Absolutely. Luke changed, I think, more than the other characters in the original trilogy, from callow farm boy to a Jedi in training to finally a Jedi master. What you’re talking about is what really fascinated me. Between “Return of the Jedi” and “Force Awakens,” there’s just decades of history that’s unknown. So I was wondering how they’re going to handle all this. Now, obviously, with “Force Awakens,” J.J. (Abrams) had a full plate. It was inevitable that they would push me down the line. I was sorry I wasn’t able to work with any of the original actors again. But it’s not about us anymore. In this new one, I was saying to Rian Johnson: I need to know my backstory. It was kind of unclear. You read where he is now and what he’s doing now and sort of have to fill in the blanks for yourself. So I did do a backstory myself. It’s not about Luke anymore, so it’s not really important. But I had to make sense of it for myself. What Rian came up with, I was stunned.
AP: Does it feel different to be putting out a “Star Wars” movie without Carrie Fisher, who died in December, and Harrison Ford, who exited with “Force Awakens”?
Hamill: It is different. She was irreplaceable. There can never be a proper reunion anymore. It’s tragic. I hate that it adds an air of melancholy to the film because it doesn’t deserve it. I know for a fact she would obviously want us to be having fun. She was all about laughter and enjoying the moment. We’re all sort of having this communal period of grief. In a way, it sort of reflects the movies themselves, which were about triumphs and tragedies. They are about a family — a dysfunctional family, but a family nonetheless.

‘Star Wars Episode IX’ loses director Colin Trevorrow
Lindsey Bahr, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
First posted: Tuesday, September 05, 2017 06:48 PM EDT | Updated: Tuesday, September 05, 2017 11:13 PM EDT
LOS ANGELES — Colin Trevorrow will no longer be directing “Star Wars: Episode IX.” Lucasfilm said Tuesday that the company and the director have mutually chosen to part ways citing differing visions for the project.
Trevorrow is best known for directing “Jurassic World” and has been working on the ninth installment of the space saga for some time. He was officially announced as the director of “Episode IX” in August of 2015 and has been co-writing the script as well. It is the final installment in the new “main” Star Wars trilogy that began with J.J. Abrams’ “The Force Awakens” in 2015 and will continue this December with director Rian Johnson’s “The Last Jedi.”
The announcement gave no indication as to whether the shakeup would affect the film’s previously set May 2019 release date. Production was expected to begin next year.
“Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process,” the Lucasfilm statement read. “We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”
Trevorrow had relocated to the U.K. in mid-2016 to focus on prepping the film.
“George (Lucas) came here to make ‘Star Wars’ and immerse himself in this place and got far away from Los Angeles, from Hollywood, really from America,” Trevorrow told The Associated Press at the time. “I’m just all in. I’m 100 per cent in the zone.”
This is the latest upheaval in the Star Wars universe. Earlier this year the young Han Solo spinoff film parted ways with director Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and replaced them with Ron Howard deep into production. And in 2015, the company fired director Josh Trank from work on another Star Wars spinoff.
Extensive reshoots on the anthology film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” led to widespread speculation that director Gareth Edwards had been unofficially sidelined on that project as well.
Star Wars and film fans online responded to Trevorrow’s departure with snarky jokes and celebration. Trevorrow had most recently directed the derided drama “The Book of Henry” and some worried about how he would handle the gargantuan task of directing a Star Wars film — even with the box office cred he scored with “Jurassic World,” which made over $1.7 billion worldwide.
In addition to pressure from fans and stakeholders “Episode IX” also has the added responsibility of dealing with the unexpected death of Princess Leia actress Carrie Fisher late last year — after her work had been completed on “The Last Jedi.” Leia will be given a “send-off” in “The Last Jedi,” but was at one point intended to be a major part of the final film.
In the wake of the Trevorrow news, many online were quick to speculate who might take up the mantle. Some suggested it’s time for the franchise to hire a female director, something Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has yet to do, while others went back to the archives and wondered whether David Lynch, who turned down directing “Return of the Jedi,” might consider the job.
But perhaps the most suggested name was that of a man already well-acquainted with the force: Abrams. Could he be Star Wars’ only hope?

Rian Johnson front runner to take over 'Star Wars: Episode IX' director role
WENN.COM
First posted: Wednesday, September 06, 2017 11:30 AM EDT | Updated: Wednesday, September 06, 2017 11:39 AM EDT
Director Rian Johnson is the favourite take over at the helm of Star Wars: Episode Ix.
News broke on Tuesday that Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow had quit the next Star Wars movie, with producers at Lucasfilm releasing a statement declaring the decision was mutual.
Now Deadline is reporting that a replacement has already been found, and Johnson will direct back-to-back Star Wars films, after finishing up on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, due out in December.
The movie website adds nothing has been signed as yet, but the prospect of Johnson continuing as the head of the franchise is high.
American filmmaker Johnson is no stranger to action films; as well as the new Star Wars, he’s also directed Looper, with Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, plus three episodes of hit U.S. TV show Breaking Bad.
Trevorrow’s departure comes three months after The Lego Movie’s Phil Lord and Christopher Miller walked away from the Han Solo spin-off film.
They confirmed at the time that creative differences had pushed them to exit their director roles, saying: “Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliche is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew.”
It only took Lucasfilm, owned by Disney, a day to find their replacement - double Oscar winner Ron Howard.
Ron, who has a long history with George Lucas and Lucasfilm, is now busy filming Alden Ehrenreich, who plays the young Han Solo, Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson in the film, slated for a May release.
“I’m beyond grateful to add my voice to the Star Wars Universe after being a fan since 5/25/77,” Ron wrote on Twitter at the time. “I hope to honour the great work already done and help deliver on the promise of a Han Solo film.”

Dave Prowse, the actor behind Darth Vader, has been forced to retire from public appearances due to poor health.
The British actor will no longer attend Star Wars fan conventions from the beginning of next year.
A statement posted on the 72-year-old’s Twitter account on Thursday reads: “Beginning in January 2018, Dave will no longer be doing any personal appearances or conventions due to health problems.”
Earlier this week, Prowse, who donned the imposing Darth Vader mask and cape for the original Star Wars trilogy, announced his “final on screen appearance” in singer Jayce Lewis’ new video.
Prowse also made appearances in British TV shows Doctor Who, The Two Ronnies, and The Morecambe & Wise Show.
He was reportedly diagnosed with dementia in 2014.

‘Back to close out the trilogy’: J.J. Abrams to direct ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’
By Mark Daniell, Postmedia Network

The Force is strong with this one.
J.J. Abrams, who helped kickstart a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, will return to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX.
Previously announced director Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) stepped away from the project last week citing creative differences, which followed the departure of Chris Miller and Phil Lord from the standalone Han Solo movie mid-shoot (they were replaced by Ron Howard).
The Abrams announcement was made official on Star Wars’ Twitter account Tuesday morning.
Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio, who helped script Justice League and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.
Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was rumoured to be a front-runner to take over for Episode IX, but he refuted that talk during a promo visit to Japan.
“It was never in the plan for me to direct Episode IX, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it,” he explained.
“For me, I was entirely focused on Episode VIII and having this experience. Now I’m just thinking about putting the movie out there and seeing how audiences respond to it. So no, I’m not really thinking about that right now.”

Harrison Ford refuses to discuss Carrie Fisher affair
WENN.COM
First posted: Thursday, September 14, 2017 08:46 AM EDT | Updated: Thursday, September 14, 2017 08:57 AM EDT
Harrison Ford has no interest in discussing his 1970s affair with his Star Wars co-star Carrie Fisher in public.
The actress confirmed decades-old rumours about a possible fling between the pair in her memoir The Princess Diarist, which was released just weeks before her tragic December death.
As she promoted the book, Carrie claimed she had given Harrison a heads up about her plans to reveal all about their three-month extramarital affair while shooting Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope in 1976, and even sent him a draft - but he didn’t respond.
Now Harrison, who is known for his reserved nature, has broken his silence about having his private life exposed so publicly, insisting he was far from happy with the media buzz Carrie’s confession attracted.
“It was strange. For me,” he told GQ magazine, admitting he did receive a little advance warning - “to a degree” - from Fisher, but didn’t end up reading what she had written about their romance.
Harrison, 75, declined to share whether he would have preferred for Carrie to have kept their affair out of the headlines, and made it clear he didn’t want to delve deeper into the topic - especially now the actress has passed.
“You know, with Carrie’s untimely passing, I don’t really feel that it’s a subject that I want to discuss,” he said.
Carrie was 19 years old at the time of their relationship, while Harrison was 33 and married to his first wife Mary Marquardt, who he ended up divorcing in 1979.
Fisher previously expressed feeling a little guilty about going public with their long-held secret, and predicted the story would probably have “bugged him” because he is so private.
“I do feel guilty,” she told U.K. chat show host Graham Norton in early December. “I never thought about it before, but I guess he will be asked about the affair for the rest of his life!”
Carried, 60, died on 27 December, days after suffering a massive heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles.

You don’t often see Luke Skywalker showing interest in a world leader’s sartorial choices.
Let alone their socks.
But it’s not everyday that the Prime Minister of Canada wears wookie socks to a major function.
Justin Trudeau did this, FYI, on Wednesday while attending the Bloomberg Global Business Forum.
These are his socks here:
Social media went wild for the Kashyyykian beauties but it wasn’t until Mark Hamill weighed in that this story really took off:

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — A senior Education Ministry official in Saudi Arabia has been fired after high school students opened their textbooks to find an image of Yoda from the “Star Wars” films seated next to a Saudi king.
The image produced by Saudi artist Abdullah Al Shehri, known as Shaweesh, shows the late King Faisal, who was foreign minister at the time, signing the United Nations Charter in 1945 with the diminutive green Jedi master seated to his right.
Education Minister Ahmed al-Eissa described it as an “unintended mistake” and wrote on Twitter that new versions of the textbook were being printed.
State-linked Okaz news website says Undersecretary for Curricula and Educational Programs Mohammed al-Harthi was dismissed from his post Monday and that the ministry will establish a new process for reviewing textbooks.

Carrie Fisher scared off friend's sexual predator with cow tongue threat
wenn.com
First posted: Monday, October 16, 2017 10:46 PM EDT | Updated: Monday, October 16, 2017 10:58 PM EDT
Star Wars icon Carrie Fisher once delivered a cow tongue to an Oscar-winning Hollywood producer to warn him off harassing one of her female friends.
Heather Ross, a close pal of the late actress, shared her experience with sexual misconduct during a recent chat on Tucson, Arizona radio show Morning Mix, revealing she agreed to meet with the unidentified filmmaker after connecting online about a potential project.
The producer picked her up in his car, but after making an excuse to pull over, he forced himself on top of Heather, who sat in the front passenger’s seat.
The move left Heather stunned, partly because she didn’t fit the industry’s usual beauty standards -- so she didn’t think she would be at risk of sexual assault by a producer.
“I felt safe thinking, ‘I’m overweight, I’m not attractive to these people, I’m not looking to become an actress,’” she explained. “When it happened, it happened so quickly that I was ashamed of myself. I thought I did something wrong. And I thought, ‘Well, maybe by meeting up with him ... I was asking for it.’”
She told Carrie all about the horrifying experience, and the furious actress ended up taking matters into her own hands, by sending the man a thinly-veiled threat, all wrapped up in a trademark blue box from top jeweller Tiffany’s.
Heather recalled, “Carrie sent me a message online and she said, ‘I just saw blank at Sony studios. I knew (the producer) would probably be there, so I went to his office and personally delivered a Tiffany’s box wrapped with the white bow. It was a cow tongue from Jerry’s Famous Deli (in Los Angeles) with a note that said, ‘If you ever touch my darling Heather or any other woman again, the next delivery will be something of yours in a much smaller box.’”
Carrie’s tough stance on sexual misconduct shouldn’t come as a surprise to fans as the cheeky star, who died last year, was known for fiercely protecting her friends and loved ones.
“That’s just how she was,” Heather said. “I miss her dearly. She stood up for people.”
Heather came forward with her story in the wake of the sexual assault and harassment allegations being made against Harvey Weinstein, although she insists the man who attacked her was not the disgraced producer.
Weinstein’s alleged bad behaviour was first revealed in a New York Times expose on Oct 5. He has since been fired from his job at The Weinstein Company, and been stripped of his lifetime membership to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Star Wars: Ron Howard unveils name of Han Solo spinoff film

LOS ANGELES — The young Han Solo Star Wars spinoff film finally has a title: Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Director Ron Howard announced the title Tuesday in a Twitter video celebrating production wrap on the anthology film starring Alden Ehrenreich as the grumpy space smuggler originated by Harrison Ford.
The film also stars Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke and Thandie Newtown and focuses on Han and Chewbacca before they joined the rebellion.
The film has had some well-known production turmoil. Deep into the shoot directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller abruptly left the project and were replaced by Howard.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is set for a May 25, 2018, release.

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' review: Rian Johnson elevates series to a whole new level of greatness
Mark Daniell
More from Mark Daniell
Published:
December 12, 2017
Updated:
December 13, 2017 8:26 AM EST
RATING: ****1/2
Director: Rian Johnson
Cast: Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, Benicio del Toro, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson
Screenplay: Rian Johnson
Running time: 152 minutes
When we spoke with Andy Serkis several weeks back, he teased that fans of Star Wars wouldn’t be able to anticipate the twists and turns of The Last Jedi — the eighth episode in the ongoing saga.
“I think they’re going to be very shocked at what they’re going to see,” said Serkis, who plays the evil leader of the First Order, Supreme Leader Snoke.
How right he was.
Written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper), this instalment (out Friday) is a richly plotted sequel that gives all of the new trilogy characters — Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and newcomer Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), among them — ample storylines, while allowing fans of George Lucas’ original trilogy a chance to reconnect with an older Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and General Leia (the late, great Carrie Fisher).
Picking up where 2015’s The Force Awakens left off, Johnson plops us right in the middle of a battle scene where Poe and other Resistance pilots are attempting to take out an enemy Dreadnaught craft belonging to the First Order. Right away, there’s Poe cracking jokes over the intercom to the over-the-top First Order leader General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson). It’s our first sign that Johnson is going to inject some humour into The Last Jedi.
Then we are back on the deserted island cliff where Rey handed Luke the lightsaber at the end of Force Awakens. No spoilers, but Luke’s reaction to the gift is one Star Wars fans will love. Like the banter-filled scene between Poe and Hux before it, it lets us know that though there will be plenty of darkness throughout, Johnson is always looking to colour his scenes with moments of levity.
The cast of The Last Jedi is pretty deep, but Johnson gives his narrative a chance to breathe. Like a masterful painting, every scene is carefully organized, with each piece of dialogue and all the bits of action deft brushstrokes on Johnson’s dazzling canvas.
We get drawn out scenes with Luke and Rey on what turns out to be the Porg-filled island of Ahch-To. She’s there to learn more about the Jedi and to entice Luke to come help the Resistance defeat the evil Kylo Ren, who also happens to be Luke’s nephew. While on Ahch-To, Rey also discovers herself mentally linked to Kylo. She thinks maybe she can save him, while he thinks he can turn her to the dark side. Saying more than that will spoil the outcome.
Luke, on the other hand, has turned to a hermit-like existence, bruised by his failure as a mentor and teacher (“I thought I could train Kylo,” Luke laments) and a loss of faith. It’s nice to see even the Star Wars universe get a sprinkling of the disappointments that tint our real-world lives.
Meanwhile, after Finn recovers from his injuries sustained at the end of The Force Awakens, he teams up with Rose to track down a codebreaker that will help them infiltrate a First Order ship and disarm a tracking device. Then there’s Poe and his trusty sidekick BB-8 (again stealing almost every scene he’s in), who have to negotiate a power struggle with Vice-Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern), a new addition to the series. Other old favourites, including R2-D2 (whose first meeting with Luke is heartwarming to see), C-3PO and Chewbacca are reintroduced.
Johnson also gives us a deeper look at the machinations of the mysterious First Order. We learn that Snoke tapped Kylo to be his apprentice because he saw the troubled youngster as “a new Vader.” But Snoke senses a struggle in Kylo — who killed father Han Solo in The Force Awakens — between the dark and the light. “You’re no Vader,” Snoke chides him. “Just a wild boy in a mask.” Has Snoke just been using Kylo as bait to lure Rey to the dark side? It’s a question fans who have seen the commercials have no doubt been asking themselves.
But if there’s one niggling bit, it’s in some of Kylo’s scenes. He’s fighting an internal battle between good and evil, but there are moments where Driver’s overacting is almost distracting.
How all this comes to a head in the film’s second and third acts, is best experienced unspoiled. But one of my favourite new additions to the series gets introduced midway through — Benicio del Toro’s DJ. His character is one of those memorable secondary parts — like Boba Fett — that leaves a lasting impression and will have moviegoers thirsting for more.
From a visual point of view, The Last Jedi has bright pops of colour — particularly in one scene that takes place in a casino and in the film’s final battle — and is a film that demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible. Johnson has packed a lot into his scenery and fans should give themselves a chance to let all that action wash over them.
But, no matter how good it looks, it’s the story that matters.
And like J.J. Abrams did before him with The Force Awakens, Johnson is trying to navigate a new world that will appeal to the next generation of Star Wars fans along with us oldsters.
In this regard, the film is an unqualified success. You don’t have to be a Star Wars fan to love this addition to the canon (heck, it works even if you haven’t seen any of the other movies).
The film doesn’t have the same cliff-hanger ending of Force Awakens, but The Last Jedi will certainly have you leaving the multiplex saying to yourself: ‘I can’t wait for what comes next.’
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theatres Friday, Dec. 15.

So far all the news ones are better than the old ones. That's my, probably unpopular, opinion anyway. I expect the Han Solo movie to buck that trend though. Looks like it's going to be awful. No one wants a Han Solo movie.

I didn’t particularly care for this one. It could have been much better if the sub plot which went nowhere had just been eliminated. I did like the risks they took with Luke at the end and making Kylo the new big bad guy. Hopefully the next one is better.

So far all the news ones are better than the old ones. That's my, probably unpopular, opinion anyway. I expect the Han Solo movie to buck that trend though. Looks like it's going to be awful. No one wants a Han Solo movie.

It may be a critical failure but I doubt it’ll be a financial ones. Even the worst Star Wars movie made close to a billion dollars world wide. The name is all it takes. That’s probably why Disney is putting one out every year now. Eventually people will get tired of them but who knows when.
