Abbotsford police officer dies following shooting on Monday

The Abbotsford Police department is mourning the loss of one their own today, after an officer was fatally shot Monday morning.

According to Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich, the incident began at 11:35 am, when police received police received a call about a possibly stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a shopping complex in the 3200 block of Mt. Lehman Road.

Speaking to media outside the Abbotsford Police detachment, Rich said the caller was so sure the vehicle was stolen, he blocked the suspect’s vehicle in while waiting for the police to arrive.

Rich said it was then that a man emerged from the vehicle and “began shooting at the caller – and others – with a shotgun.”

Police received several 911 calls about the shooting itself which Rich said happened at about 11:52 am.

APD officers arrived in the area and attempted to “engage and arrest” the suspect and there “was an exchange of gunfire,” said Rich.

It was at this point the APD officer was shot by the suspect. He was taken to hospital with “very serious” injuries.

The suspect then fled the area in the stolen vehicle, but was arrested in the intersection of Mt. Lehman Road and Fraser Highway.

The suspect, a man in his 60s from Alberta, was then taken to hospital with injuries that are believed to be non-threatening.

Abbotsford Police officer “is a hero”

The injured APD officer was pronounced dead at the hospital, shortly after he arrived.

Rich said he met with the victim’s spouse to deliver the news and “it is something I never wanted to have to do in my life.”

Rich said the actions of all the officers involved in the incident were “absolutely heroic.”

He added that officers responded to the incident in a way that was “designed to protect the public.”

The officer who gave his life, said Rich, “is a hero. He was protecting his community. He will always be my hero.”

IHIT and IIO are both now involved and the investigation continues.

Rest in Peace, my heartfelt condolences go to the family, friends

Sad to see this kind of violence in Canada, but a great example why we need capital punishment in Canada.

It's not rocket science, just one more deterrent to protect our enforcers of law and order. When that's gone there's not much separating us from the insecurity and perils of the "Old West". The guy is obviously a coward and you want to make damn sure he never gets a second chance.

So was the car stolen?
Why did the shooter not shoot at the person blocking him in?
What role did the person blocking him in play? Was it a setup to get the Cops there?

Okay we have the answers........

George MacDonald, the fleet manager at MSA Ford in the Auto Mall, told Global News that the Mustang was stolen on Saturday.

“At about 9:15 Saturday morning we had a customer come in, want to take a test drive on a Mustang. He walked in, one of the sales guys went to get the keys for him, he passed the customer the key, the guy put the licence plate on the back of the car, the guy sped off in the Mustang, never came back.”

MacDonald said they reported the car stolen to Abbotsford police on Saturday.

On Monday they noticed what they believed to be the same Mustang, now with Alberta licence plates on it, at a nearby gas station.

They tried the remote key entry on the vehicle and it worked, so they called Abbotsford police.

“We were standing there for 15, 20 minutes. We’ve got the car blocked in, we don’t see the person that stole it. As we walked into Quiznos, one of the guys told me, ‘Hey George, can you come back, one of your customers is waiting for a key.'”

“As I walked back [to the Auto Mall], got back here to the dealership with the key, shots fired,” MacDonald said.

“The guy apparently rammed the truck, fired three bullets into my lot manager’s truck, Corey, in his blue F150, and Mike, the sales manager ran one way and Corey ran the other way. The guy then jumped the curb with the Mustang and that’s when the takedown took place.

How would capital punishment have prevented this killing?

There's no guarantee it would have, but at least knowing what would be in store for him may have made him think twice before embarking on this rampage. Anyway it's too late to concern ourselves about this killing now but it's a good idea to prepare for the future!

Also save taxpayers a ton of money.
The real question is where were the cops between 11:35 and 11:52 when the first shots were fired?

Maybe on their way to the scene. Not sure if 17 minutes is unreasonable response time given things like traffic conditions.

You seriously think the guy shooting had any thoughts about capital punishment or the lack thereof?

Is that why there are no killings in US states that have capital punishment? Like that guy in the church shooting, he didn't shoot anyone because he knew many people in the church would be armed?

So the way to prevent killing is to kill people that you think might kill someone.

If you are looking for a fool proof method that will apply to every perpetrator there isn't one. Is there anyone in the world able to read those guy's minds?

So the way to prevent killing is to kill people that you think might kill someone.

Who made that ludicrous statement besides you?

it is no deterrent to anything and has never been proven to be.

it is a horrendously expensive and ethically questionable practice which is why we don't have it anymore.

That's bull sh*t - I know if I was contemplating a murder, it would be enough to make me think twice - anyway how do you propose to prove a negative?
