Trump made a mistake in any moral or legal sense of saying the the league should fire any player who does not stand for the anthem. Anyone with any sense realized that once you coerce people to salute national symbols you've undermined their fundamental integrity. Trump was essentially appealing to the lowest common denominator of his base.

That said all the issues that were supposed to be highlighted by this protest has been lost in the flap over the anthem issue itself. Symbols.. including flags, anthems and war memorials (confederate or otherwise) should not be politicized. There are more appropriate and effective forums to present a point of view.
