Britain is the most influential power in Europe and second only to the US around the world, a think tank concludes today.

The Henry Jackson Society rejects the ‘doom and gloom’ around Brexit and finds that the UK remains a ‘leading global power nation’.

Its report, an ‘Audit of Geopolitical Capacity’, puts the UK ahead of EU nations such as Germany and France.

But it also concludes that, globally, it is more influential than economic powerhouses like China and India.

Alan Mendoza, executive director of the Henry Jackson Society, says the UK is a 'leading global power nation'

The authors evaluated Britain’s standing against seven measures. They were economics, technological prowess, military strength, cultural ‘prestige’, diplomatic ‘leverage’ and demographics.

It put the US top globally but Britain came in second place. France came third, China fourth, Germany fifth, India sixth, Japan seventh and Russia eighth.

Critics of Brexit argue that leaving the EU will undermine Britain’s influence in the world.

But Alan Mendoza, executive director of the Henry Jackson Society, said: ‘For all the doom and gloom surrounding the implications of Brexit, the reality shines through that the UK remains a leading global power nation, with immense soft and hard power capabilities.

According to the Henry Jackson Society, Western democracies and their leaders still command authority on the world stage

‘The lesson of this report is clear: our future is what we choose to make of it.’

The report’s author, James Rogers, added: ‘After Brexit, some are worried that the UK is about to begin a period of economic and geopolitical decline.

‘But what this audit makes clear is that far from beginning the Brexit process from a position of weakness, the UK is in a remarkably strong position.

‘When you analyse data regarding British military strength, technological prowess and cultural prestige, the UK is second only to the United States in its capabilities. Even in relation to economic or diplomatic capacity, it is consistently in the top five countries.’

The report finds that both the US and UK – and other Western democracies – still command an ‘astonishing lead’ in global influence over potential competitors. The US came top in every category except demographics.

I think the article refers to the city of London, where the bankers are, and the queen walks behind the mayor, which while IN Britain, is not of Britain.
:)

Of course they may be only counting countries who start wars, not necessarily countries that win them...War influences a country no matter who wins the rubble.

so the US may not really be number one.

And are again, thanks to Ronaldo. They won Euro 2016, in which the Engerlish were notably curbstomped by mighty Iceland.

Iceland? Seriously? The feeble English couldn't even beat Iceland?

You're talking about the Eurovision Song Contest, aren't you?

So Portugal is the second-most powerful country in the world because they flukily won Euro 2016 after finishing only third in their four-team group (two points behind Hungary and Iceland), qualifying for the Quarter Finals only as the best third-paced team and winning only one match within 90 minutes in the whole tournament (the Semi-Final against Wales)?

Neither could Portugal.

Most powerful country in Europe in soccer, that's for sure.

You know what ain't a fluke? The fact England couldn't win if the other side forfeited.

Portugal aren't the most powerful country in European football by a long shot.

You know what ain't a fluke? The fact England couldn't win if the other side forfeited.

I'll tell you what was a fluke: England NOT winning Euro 2004 in Portugal.

Nice planes!

That Type 22 in the foreground has a wee, little Lynx helicopter on board, anyway.

Maybe you should send this article to the other nations of the world. You know, those that do not even know Britain exists.

And what countries would those be?

Considering Britain has invaded or colonised all but 22 of the world's nations maybe it's all, or some, of those 22.

There was an Englishman selling beer and peanuts up in section 81-B, 27 years ago.

That was the year the great English side containing the likes of Shilton, Lineker, Gascoigne, Pearce, Waddle, Beardsley and Wright came within a whisker of winning the World Cup.

Nice planes!
I don't know what picture you're looking at but I can't see any planes in it.
