Trudeau Sr. was from Quebec, too and the Separatists (and ultimately a lot of Quebec) hated him, as well.

Separatists had very good reason to. Pierre Trudeau was a federalist and refused to give in to the whining of Quebec separatists. In fact he was less sympathetic to the interests of Quebec than most of the Prime Ministers that followed him, especially Prime Minsters like Mulroney.
