How best to handle the anthem debate?

The liberals want to change it, the conservatives not.

Simple solution: de-officialize it and let everyone sing it as they like.

It works for the UK with the Royal anthem, no?

Likewise for holidays. Instead of officializing national indigenous people's day, just de-officialize Canada Day.

That's the simple way to make them all equal.

Thanks for proving why libertarianism is stupid.

When has the royal anthem ever been the official anthem of the UK? Sure a de facto version exists that you can find on the official website, but strictly sepaking, no official version, and a few unofficial versions do exist though the difference usually involves negating this or that verse.

How has that caused the UK any problem?

In Canada, rememberance day is not a stat either, and that's probably what has savedit from becoming nothing more than just another drunken-party day.

Also, aside from having a libertarian streak, am I really 100% libertarian?

No, part of you is sane.

So are you suggesting that Canada absolutely needs an official version of the anthem and official statutory holidays because Canadians don't know how to decide for themselves what days they'd like to take off work and what songs to sing, that a de facto anthem just isn't good enough?

The same goes for the separate Catholic and Protestant schools.

That's my preference for the UK Anthem.

England has no official anthem either. Sure most Englishment unofficially accept Jerusalem as the England's de facto anthem, but again, no official anthem per se.

I was at my grand daughter's graduation last week and they opened the ceremony with the National Anthem ... and I realized I don't know the words any more. Do it in French. It's never changed from the original - the tongue in which it was penned.

If you don't remember the words yet are still alive, then I take that as additional proof that Canada does not need an official anthem.

Oh, I remember the words - the ones I sang in school. Anthem's had several revisions since then. I still like The Maple Leaf Forever....

You see. If we had no official anthem, then the government of the day could sing the anthem of its choice and outside of official contexts, so could the public sing the anthem of its choice.

I have a modest offering. . .

Oh Canada!
Our home and native soil
The fish are all gone
But we still got trees and oil

La mademoiselle from Armentiers
Et la plume de ma tante
Le Marsaillaise is a French song
There's a beaver in my pants

God damn, it's stuck
And now here comes a moose
Oh Canada!
Wish I was in Toulouse!

To me that is a childish Liberal solution: If they can't get their way, then take a wrecking ball to it.
