Alberta moving out of recession into modest recovery: quarterly update

The Alberta government had some good news to report with its latest quarterly update — real GDP is expected to grow by 2.4 per cent in 2017, meaning the province may be finally moving out of recession and into a modest recovery.

According to the third-quarter fiscal update released Thursday, 18,000 jobs have been created since a low point in July 2016, with the majority (12,500) in the oil and gas sector.

"The evidence shows that the storm clouds are starting to recede with a little more sunshine peeking through," said Finance Minister Joe Ceci.

Ceci said the province is expected to return to balanced budgets in 2023 and 2024.

Wern't you the one loudly proclaiming about a year ago that oil was dead? Now look, despite Notley's best efforts oil is well on it's way to recovery. Just like everyone with a brain said it would. So is coal. So much for your alt-left "news"

No evidence.

That Liberals should be in charge of the country.

Flossy doesn't have a problem with oil per se. He just doesn't like the idea of the power shifting west

Northern Ontario,
You don't understand the purpose of a carbon price.

.

And leftards such as yourself would have a little bit more credibility if you called it by it's true name..."a carbon tax"
And what it is is a consumer tax!
The second half of the last century did more to reduce pollution with proper regulations than this stupid tax scheme can ever hope to accomplish...
Because the smarter people can actually see it for what it is....a government tax grab!

How big would the recovery, due to increased oil prices, have been without the Dippers?

Depends on who else was in power. The Conservatives were spending money like drunken sailors. They were also the ones that initially started the royalty review nonsense that made every oil and gas company reevaluate their Alberta operations.

On the other hand, taxes pay for the services that people demand. Let's remove taxes, and remove services, such as hospitals and schools, and assistance for businesses.

I have never said I was for removal of all taxes. If the tax money actually will pay for schools or hospitals, I would not be against it (once shown that fiscal restraint had been used in more useless areas and the money was truly not available from the current tax levels).

However, I tend to think that increasing taxes takes money out of the hands of the consumer. This money if they had to spend it would cause more flow of goods and more employment and therefore more tax revenue. In the min-90s this was clearly demonstrated in Ontario with the Harris tax cuts. The economy bounced out of recession and tax revenues actually increased.

This all being said, this is a carbon tax. The spending will be for the government's pet project du jour and not for hospitals or schools. It won't even help the environment (surely you aren't one of these people who actually believe it will?).

Trump wants to tax Americans to the tune of 35% tariffs on imports. Trumpites think that'll MAGA.

They need to make up their minds.
