My main motive for going vegan is compassion towards animals. Health is a secondary but still essential consideration.

What about compassion towards flora? You know the natural habitats that get broken down and repurposed for farmland so that you can have that "healthy choice". It may sound like a stretch but habitat loss isnt only caused by lumberjacks. Also farmlands are bastions for invasive plants which furthur degrade biodiversity.

Is it preferable to just have farms to feed people or to have farms to feed animals and then ranches and pastures to feed people, which requires even more land?

If your hinting at the fact that a vegan is just as big a hypocrite as a person who consumes meat then you are on the right track

My experiences are that vegans are vegetarians who have turned it into their own personal religion.

You can substitute most of the proteins and nutrients.you can get from meat with non-meat but why would you want to? Nothing wrong with a nice juicy steak every once in a while.

What hypocrisy? I used to hunt. I have no problem with a person eating meat, just not my choice. But I do object to a meat eater criticizing a hunter for slaughtering an animal. If you are willing to eat it, you should be willing to slaughter it too.

To be precise, I'm not actually vegan. I buy vegan. What I mean by that is that I do not spend my own money on it but might eat it if someone offers it to me as a sign of friendship or courtesy. That said, though I prefer to not eat meat, I am not going to criticize those who slaughter animals when I sometimes eat meat too. Again, if you are willing to eat it, you should be willing to slaughter it.

It's no more of a religion than choosing to show compassion towards a person. Do you accuse any person who shows compassion towards another of religious fanaticism?

Who (which person) are vegans showing compassion for when they are lecturing me on how I should not be eating meat?

Have I been lecturing you on not eating meat? I sometimes refer to myself as a vegan even though I do eat meat occasionally out of respect towards my host. I just don't buy it. From what I'm seeing in this forum, it's rather the meat-eaters who are hostile towards the vegans and not the other way around.

I didn't read the whole thread. I just stated my opinion and yes I have been lectured by vegans (in person). I did not mean to imply anything regarding what was said before in this thread (as I did not quote anything).

Yes we all realize that you plan on going through life in total ignorance. Just like the globull warming truthers.

Logging by itself does not cause habitat loss since we replant what we log. Including some of the roads Just like nature. Where it becomes a problem is when that land is not replanted but made into a subdivision or strip mall.

Is it preferable to just have farms to feed people or to have farms to feed animals and then ranches and pastures to feed people, which requires even more land?

Vegetables just taste better when processed into higher forms like meat.

Tell me about it. You'd think Canadians are afraid of heights. I remember going along a suburban road with one-story plaza after one-story plaza for miles thinking how if they just built high rises to fit all those shops in, we could save enough land to build plenty of farmland in the city itself. But no, we got to build all of these one-story box stores wasting space.

My wife would agree with you. When I cook, it's all vegan and she enjoys it; but when she cooks, she always has to sprinkle some meat in most dishes. She doesn't eat a lot of meat, but always adds a bit 'for flavour.' She cooks well though... for a meat-cooker. :)

Vegans end up as children of the corn

What?

As I said, no science involved

I have no problem with vegetarians or vegans. Just don't pretend that type of diet can be defended scientifically. If it's your personal belief system, fill yer boots.

I would have to say this is also my experience... I am not vegan because I have seen the fallacies in restrictions yourself so much that it causes nutritional deficiencies.... but as a vegetarian, nothing goads me more than a vegan ranting at me about their belief system...and not having any awareness about the actual nutritional facts of their diet.
