Chicago on the Brink

Heather Mac Donald on the escalating dysfunction of black Chicago:

Fatherlessness in the city’s black community is at a cataclysmic level — close to 80 percent of children are born to single mothers in high-crime areas. Illegitimacy is catching up fast among Hispanics, as well. Gangs have stepped in where fathers are absent. A 2012 gang audit documented 59 active street gangs with 625 factions, some controlling a single block. Schools in gang territories go on high alert at dismissal time to fend off violence. Endemic crime has prevented the commercial development and gentrification that are revitalising so many parts of Chicago closer to downtown; block after block on the South Side features a wan liquor store or cheque-cashing outlet, surrounded by empty lots and the occasional skeleton of a once-magnificent beaux-arts apartment complex or bank. Non-functioning streetlights, their fuse boxes vandalised, signal the reign of a local gang faction.

There’s more, lots more, but it’s not for the faint-hearted.

The only thing worst then police is the lack of police  it's hard to grasp the relativity of it ;)

Let them have what they ask for.

Before or after the snow melted?
After, actually. It was quite pleasant. I left on a Saturday morning, having advised some Irish law students that the St. Patrick's Day festivities were scheduled for that day (they had a 10:00 p.m. flight back to Ireland) and that their accents guaranteed they wouldn't be able to pay for a drink all day. My advice was:

1. Don't drink green beer.

2. Be cheerful and avoid politics.

3. Don't drink green beer.

4. Ladies should keep their purses across their shoulders, with the bag in front of them.

5. Don't drink green beer.

6. One person should be the designated reasonably sober one.

7. Don't drink green beer.

I saw them in Ireland a month later. They had a great time.

I was in Chicago in March. Looked OK to me.

But I'm sure y'all know better.

we're sure you were and we're sure it was, to you in the hotel lobby.

but we're also sure that chief of patrol (now superintendent) Eddie Johnson knows more than y'all.

Chicago is a nice location for Funeral Directors, Morticians and Hearse drivers to establish a viable business. Folks there are dying to meet them.

Chicago Has Its Deadliest Month in About Two Decades

CHICAGO — In a city wrestling with a rise in gun violence and turmoil in its police department, August seemed like the longest month. By midnight on Wednesday, 90 murders had occurred in August alone, making it the deadliest month in Chicago in about 20 years.
Chicago, the nation’s third-largest city, has experienced more homicides this year than the bigger cities of Los Angeles and New York combined.

I thought Chicago had anti gun laws. Must be ladders doing all the killing.

Pretty rough town. I went to school there several years ago and I pulled off to gas up in a bad side of town I guess and the attendant came out and warned me to gas up somewhere else. It was strange. Missouri tags I guess.

But if you go to downtown Chicago and visit Lakeshore drive you'll find it to be a beautiful city. Every large city will have a high crime rate.
