Re: BREAKING: Liberals agree to NDP proposal on Electoral Reform

It's time to go with a Republic.

I vote for a Monarchy, petros. We could work out a deal with the Brits whereby William and Kate become our King and Queen. It would be sooooo cool. Think about all the fun their kids could have playing with Justin and Sophie's little ones. Think of the optics. Toronto could refurbish Casa Loma for their digs. I just don't see a downside. ;-)

Colpy for President-for-life.

I'm too impatient to wait for a political appointment. I want to be elected as the County dog catcher right f-cking now.

Re: BREAKING: Liberals agree to NDP proposal on Electoral Reform

Excuse me?

The last minute?

We've been fighting with the idiots of the Liberal Party for months......and they have only been in power for 6 months.

In other words, WTF are you talking about?

Did you expect a constitutional amendment before the election just in case a vicious idiot that cared naught about democracy or the people was elected?

For months, eh. Wow..... that is such a long time. I didn't realize that this was new....oh...wait..... this is the way it has been from at least 1982 when the new constitution was ratified. This would mean that for the last 8 years, while the Cons were in (your gods) it could have been looked at to be changed.

Or is it that you all waited till the last minute to try and get it changed.

Gerry, Gerry....are you losing it?

The Cons were not interested in changing the system.

Nobody has been interested in opening the constitution since the Charlottetown Accord was rejected by the people. And that had nothing to do with electoral reform.

Electoral reform only grabbed any attention when the Reform Party talked it up, and they never formed government.

Try to focus.....this is a fight against a power grab by the Liberals, now that they have power. And they have only had power since early November.

No, this is about you whining about what the Libs said they would be looking at during the election and the fact that they can do it LEGALLY and WITHIN the framework of the constitution without a referendum. Something that is NOT new, and obviously something you knew about quite some time ago with your reference to the old Reform Party.

Changing our electoral system should be put to all Canadians, not a select group or party. We need to understand the changes and be a part of the decision. I would say the same if the Conservatives were still in power. Canadians should decide.

Re: BREAKING: Liberals agree to NDP proposal on Electoral Reform

The Cons were not interested in changing the system.
The Conservatives weren't interested in changing the electoral system...?

On May 3, 2007, under the Conservatives, An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act was enacted, fixing the date of each election to be on the third Monday of October, every four years. This was a substantive change to the electoral system, which previously permitted the Prime Minister nearly unfettered discretion in terms of when the writs for an election would be dropped.

The Conservatives also passed the Fair Elections Act, which made very significant changes to the way that our electoral system in Canada is administered. Political parties were given greater control over the administration of general elections, and the role of the Chief Electoral Officer in ensuring integrity and engagement in the electoral process was throttled.

I didn't hear any Conservatives demanding a referendum on these reforms.

Nobody has been interested in opening the constitution since the Charlottetown Accord was rejected by the people. And that had nothing to do with electoral reform.
And nobody's interested in opening up the constitution now, either — since electoral reform is not a constitutional question. This is a position that is also supported by the Chief Electoral Officer. No constitutional amendments are required to change the voting system and, in any case, the voting system is exclusively within the purview of the federal Parliament.

Try to focus.....this is a fight against a power grab by the Liberals, now that they have power. And they have only had power since early November.
The Liberals just gave up their majority on the committee that is going to be developing recommendations for the new system, Colpy. The Liberals have demonstrated that even with a majority government, they are willing to change their minds, make compromises, and work for the betterment of Canada as reforms to this system are explored.

We have a representative democracy. Canadians get their final say by casting a vote at the ballot box for someone to represent them in the House of Commons. Even if Canadians "got a say" through some sort of referendum process (which Elections Canada has said cannot be done), Parliament would still need to enact the legislation needed to implement that decision; Canadians would not be casting referendum votes on the final form of a bill.

The Libs ran part of their campaign, last election, on Electoral reform. Canadians gave them a majority in the House.

From what I heard a couple of weeks ago on C.B.C. it's not something without the power of a political party, His Nibs had no business promising it and the electorate who voted for him on that premise are gullible. (He knew that too)

Yes it is. The Libs have a majority in the HoC, they can push through an electoral reform bill.

Wrong, dead wrong.

It falls under the jurisdiction of the Elections Act. His Nibs has f**k all to do with it.

Yep, I don't doubt that part of it! But I think maybe prior to the election His Nibs tried to allude to the bull sh*t that he had more influence than he actually does. You and I probably have as much influence as Justin.

If his "nibs" wants to introduce legislation to change the elections act from fptp to what ever he wants, without consulting anyone , and without a referendum, he can. He has a majority in the house. He can pass what ever legislation he so pleases. You and I can not. So, yes, he has a fu ck of a lot more "influence" than we do.

I know I've asked this question before, but, have you always been this stupid, or have you had to work at it?

Perhaps you've forgotten one tiny little step! :) The Senate has to approve it, in the unlikely event it gets that far.

So, in other words, the Liberals will hedge future elections in their favor, crippling any challenge and do so without the say so of the Canadian people.
And they said Harper was tyrannical. Wow!
Just because they won a majority does not mean that Canadians should have a say in this tinkering.

You obviously didn't listen to the program that was on C.B.C. radio recently. Trudeau has no more power than Adam's off ox when it comes to voting reform..............he was being an A$$hole!
