Re: BREAKING: Liberals agree to NDP proposal on Electoral Reform
The Cons were not interested in changing the system.
The Conservatives weren't interested in changing the electoral system...?
On May 3, 2007, under the Conservatives,
An Act to amend the Canada Elections Act was enacted, fixing the date of each election to be on the third Monday of October, every four years. This was a substantive change to the electoral system, which previously permitted the Prime Minister nearly unfettered discretion in terms of when the writs for an election would be dropped.
The Conservatives also passed the
Fair Elections Act, which made very significant changes to the way that our electoral system in Canada is administered. Political parties were given greater control over the administration of general elections, and the role of the Chief Electoral Officer in ensuring integrity and engagement in the electoral process was throttled.
I didn't hear any Conservatives demanding a referendum on these reforms.
Nobody has been interested in opening the constitution since the Charlottetown Accord was rejected by the people. And that had nothing to do with electoral reform.
And nobody's interested in opening up the constitution now, either — since electoral reform is not a constitutional question. This is a position that is also supported by the Chief Electoral Officer. No constitutional amendments are required to change the voting system and, in any case, the voting system is exclusively within the purview of the federal Parliament.
Try to focus.....this is a fight against a power grab by the Liberals, now that they have power. And they have only had power since early November.
The Liberals just gave up their majority on the committee that is going to be developing recommendations for the new system, Colpy. The Liberals have demonstrated that even with a majority government, they are willing to change their minds, make compromises, and work for the betterment of Canada as reforms to this system are explored.
