Well, now that Secretary of State Kerry has visited the Hiroshima Peace Park, everybody's wondering if President Obama will apologize for the A-bombs when he's in Japan.

I propose the following apology text: "The United States humbly apologizes for the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We now realize that we should have fire-bombed them like we did Tokyo, which killed more people than both A-bombs put together."

Please enlighten us as to what he should have done to make it a heartfelt, genuine apology.
He shouldn't have bothered in the first damn place. And neither should have Harper. Why the f*ck is anyone apologizing for Canada rightfully exercising its sovereignty 100 years ago?

That's what makes the apology so fake. Maybe Trudeau should formally apologize for the 54 of the 70+ years the Liberals were in power while the residential school system was still in place. Maybe he should apologize for his daddy not shutting them down when he was in power.

Oh NOW I get it. He's apologizing because it was a CONSERVATIVE govt in power when the Komagata Maru "incident" occurred.

If Canada was responsible, then I'd agree with you. Since Canada is not responsible for "the Inquisition" then no. At this point, all you are doing is showing your ignorance.

This is the Government of Canada apologising for a wrong perpetrated by the Government of Canada.

As was brought up by another poster, Canada is a sovereign nation and has the final say on things like immigration.

I get it that these folks were 'looking for a better life' but the responsibility would have fallen directly on them to organize this in advance, not Canada's responsibility to organize things after the fact.

As for the Spanish Inquisition comment I made, it is simply an exaggeration of the logic that si being applied selectively by Trudeau in this specific case. Sure, Canada didn't formally exist at the time, but that is a tiny detail compared to the reality that multiple generations have passed since the Komagata incident... If you're prepared to adopt an uber-flexible POV on this issue (and ultimately, many many others), why not take it to the extreme?

Komagata Maru: Justin Trudeau to apologize for 1914 incident

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will offer an apology in the House of Commons on May 18 almost 102 years after the Komagata Maru incident, where the government of the day turned away more than 300 Indians seeking a better life in Canada.

In 2008, then-prime minister Stephen Harper apologized to the Sikh community in Surrey, B.C., but many demanded he make a formal apology in the Commons.

The Sikh community will get its wish next month, Trudeau announced in Ottawa Monday.

"As a nation, we should never forget the prejudice suffered by the Sikh community at the hands of the Canadian government of the day. We should not and we will not," he said.

"That is why, next month, on May 18th, I will stand in the House of Commons and offer a full apology for the Komagata Maru incident."

Trudeau called the laws that allowed the Canadian government to turn the Komagata Maru away discriminatory.

"The passengers of the Komagata Maru, like millions of immigrants to Canada since, were seeking refuge, and better lives for their families. With so much to contribute to their new home, they chose Canada and we failed them utterly," he said.

Discriminatory laws

In 1910, an order-in-council was passed which stated immigrants coming to Canada must do so by continuous journey. As a result, Gurdit Singh chartered the Japanese ship Komagata Maru and sold tickets for a continuous journey from the Punjab state to Canada.

The Komagata Maru sailed into Vancouver harbour with 376 people aboard on May 23, 1914.

The passengers argued a 1908 provision that required all "Asiatic" immigrants to have $200 did not apply to them because they were British subjects. At the time, India was still a colony.

The dominion government would not allow the passengers to disembark and the vessel sat in the harbour for two months.

That July, the government ordered the ship to sail but the passengers took over the ship and refused to leave.

On July 19, 125 Vancouver police officers and 35 special immigration agents attempted to board the vessel and were beaten back. Thirty were injured.

On July 23, under the guns of the naval cruiser HMCS Rainbow, the Komagata Maru was escorted out to sea and returned to India.

Oooooh that's a biggie. Apologize for something that happened even before his father was born. How very PC. And useless.

Please enlighten us as to what he should have done to make it a heartfelt, genuine apology.

THe moron wasn't even born then. Neither was his father. Why would he feel the least bit necessary to apologize?

Who is gonna apologize for what the aliens have done to the earth? We've all suffered for thousands of years! Abductions. Probing. Strange, extraterrestrial diseases. Introduction of the British into the gene pool. Muslims. When are the aliens gonna say, "We're sorry."?

Just one example: At the end of WWII, the United States was forced by aliens to accept responsibility for 'the bomb drops' on Japan. How come the aliens didn't say they were sorry for messing up parts of Japan?

Collusion at the White House
- wire release from 2006, network

In 1945, President Truman, new to the office, accepted responsibility for the use of two atomic bombs on Japan. It was either this, or retaliation from space, that would see the US crippled by the same alien force that was unleashed on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They actually were not bombs in the conventional sense, but some sort of irradiated sewage, ejected from two alien spacecraft.

Years later, President Bush was overheard talking with Condoleeza Rice, his first Secretary of State. She suggested that he not go public with this. The aliens, she said, would react and destroy much of America.

President Bush's response was not heard, but Dick Cheney was quoted as saying that President Bush was outraged by the suggestion. VP Cheney said that the President was ticked that a secretary - a woman secretary no less - would even attempt to advise the president. He reportedly scolded her and reminded Dr. Rice that the US emancipated black people from the slavery they suffered in Africa. He allegedly told her she should be grateful to work at the White House as a secretary, and to get back to her typewriter.

- CNN (The Cdn News Network)

So who is gonna apologize on behalf of the aliens? Who is gonna apologize for George Walker Bush? Someone has got a lot of explaining to do over this!

Funny how the Old Stock Canadians are getting so cranked about this.

It's actually pretty sad, primarily because they will all die cranked about this while the rest of the world does not give a guff about their point of view.
