We did elect him on the promises to spend a lot of money. This was expected.

Oh, please. This was not a decision of the current government.

This increase was already legislated in s. 55.1(2)(b) of the Parliament of Canada Act.

Did you really read the link? Why did the cons not do it in several years? Prove your assumption. Your sad.

He rolled back a pile of other legislation, but conveniently skipped this. I guess ensuring Terrorists keep their Canadian citizenship trumps canceling raises for government officials.

Yes, I read the link. The National Post also clearly acknowledges that these increases were already set out in the Parliament of Canada Act — and they have been since 1985, in some form or another. The government does not decide each year whether or not to increase sessional allowances for senators and MPs; it happens automatically, since those annual increases are a part of our federal law.

Where the National Post perhaps indulges too far is where they say that "MPs have the option of freezing their own salaries through federal legislation." Of course they do. MPs have the option of doing or not doing anything under the sun through federal legislation.

A law that increases Government salary while giving power to the lawmakers to freeze everyone Else's. Ingenious! I mean corrupt as hell, but still ingenious.

Actually, it was the Cons who brought it in, in the first place. Guess who was PM in 1985.

Not really shocked that everyone is pigging at the trough though. I tend to expect little to nothing from politicians these days, and they sure don't disappoint in that regard.

The popular belief is that the more money the job pays the better the quality of people who will take the job on.
I don't believe that is true.
If a person has the best interests of the country and the people at heart he will be willing to do the job at whatever the pay rate is because he believes in what he wants to do.
Note the tens of thousands of volunteers who work tirelessly for a cause because they want to do the right thing. I can even remember when community members volunteered for council, school boards and such with no pay at all.
As soon as the money and perks get high what you get is people looking for the benefits and with no care for how effective they will be. Hell, who wouldn't want to serve in the government for a few years and get to retire early with a bigger pension than most of us could even dream of! Or be a senator for big pay and job security for life?
I think the people should have a say in whether the Government workers get a pay raise or not. After all, we're the ones paying for it. Nobody should be able to set his own wages schedule.

Glad to see someone is talking some sense.

What you should be looking for is outrage from ordinary citizens. We already know that everyone in Ottawa sucks.

If it had not been posted here I would not have known about this so don't expect to hear to much outrage outside of Alberta.

I would be peed if it was only the Libs benefitting but when it's all parties and none of them are complaining, that says it all for me. They are all the same when it comes to looking after themselves.......

Why would they complain? They are getting a raise. Taxpayers of all stripes are the ones who should be complaining, including yourself, but instead you are pointing to sucking central and saying look at those hypocritical dippers and conservative MP's.
