Considering that the low commodity price would have wiped-out any/all corporate profits and therefore, a tax hike is ineffective as it pretty much applies to EBITA, the entire exercise of raising the taxes had a bigger effect on the companies NOT reinvesting any money in AB and any new investment went East to Sask.

Kinda defeats the purpose if the actions result in the gvt collecting even fewer dollars

He is being dismissive of the realities of Oil.


He suggests an Oil person be in charge. I say no because they aren't doing a very good job of looking after their business that they are supposedly good at and thousands of people are getting laid off.


I still want to see a 'temporary' Made in Canada Oil Price that will retain these jobs Apparently $35.00 is the bottom but If $50.00 is needed we could all handle that at the pumps........


The Canadian entrepreneur and financial commentator said his offer comes as an individual concerned about the country and the economy.

O'Leary said energy companies remain in the dark about potential changes to royalties, as a panel looking into what the province charges the industry has yet to release its findings. In the meantime, the NDP government has raised corporate taxes and is moving forward with plans to raise the minimum wage in the province.

Amidst low oil prices through 2015, the energy sector has seen 40,000 job losses, many of which were in Alberta, according to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.

"All that talent, all those people that know what they're doing are losing their jobs by the thousands. All because of a government that just by some unfortunate chance got elected," O'Leary said. "(A government) that's never run an energy-based economy. What a disaster."

He said Alberta needs a leader who has worked in the energy industry, as oil exports are "the essence of our economy."

The tax increases are minimal and the decision on Royalties hadn't happened yet. Alberta still has the lowest Corporate tax environments in Canada or the U.S.

I still don't see how an Oil Exec could save all those jobs being lost in the Oil business as O'leary claims unless we have a Made in Canada price......

Provincially, those making over $125,000 per year will face income tax increases of between 0.5 and 1.25 per cent, depending on their income. Federally, anyone making over $200,000 per year will be dinged an additional four per cent.

The middle class, however, will get some relief. Those earning between $45,000 and $90,000 will get a federal tax break topping out at $680 per year, while provincial taxes will remain steady at 10 per cent.

I'm willing to buy stock in Alberta energy companies if Notley leaves and it has nothing to do with the fact that some of these stocks are at bargain basement prices and have nowhere to go but up. You might be dumb enough to want to pay higher gas prices but the rest of us certainly do not want to. What happensd to your disdain for orporate subsidies?
BC is doing just fine and creating jobs. Maybe some of the eastern provinces could try responsible government and do the same instead of forcing tradespeople to go to Alberta to find a real job.

Call it dumb (I'm sure you have a better idea to save those jobs) to want to pay 10 cents a liter more if you will but if you could save jobs in the Oil field I think those workers would be very thankful to you for doing so.


As you say, most working people make over a 100 thou a year so they wouldn't even notice an extra $200.00 a year in gas....
