Rare galaxy has 2 black holes, one unusually slim and 'naked'

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- An astrophysicist has discovered something even rarer than a double-black hole galaxy: a skinny black hole.
The University of Colorado at Boulder's Julie Comerford reported her findings Tuesday at the American Astronomical Society's annual meeting in Kissimmee, Florida.
To date, only 12 galaxies are known to exist with two black holes in their midst, Comerford said. Normally galaxies have a single supermassive black hole at the centre, equivalent to 1 million to 1 billion times the mass of our sun.
But in this newly identified galaxy about 1 billion light-years away, one of the two black holes is significantly smaller than the other and apparently starved of stars. Black holes typically are surrounded by stars; this one appears "naked."
Comerford speculates the slim black hole lost mass in the collision of two galaxies that merged into this one --" a crash diet." Or it's a rare example of an intermediate-sized black hole that likely will morph over time into a supermassive monster.
Astronomers have yet to confirm an intermediate-size black hole, which makes Comerford's streamlined target extra tantalizing. Intermediate black holes are 100 to 1 million times the mass of our sun.
Comerford used the Hubble Space Telescope and NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory in her study. She discovered this latest two-black hole galaxy -- her fourth -- last year. Finding a potential intermediate-size black hole inside was "an extra bonus," she told reporters.
The first double-black hole galaxy was found in 2003 by accident, according to Comerford. She is trying to systematically uncover more. The findings should shed light on the evolution of black holes.
This particular galaxy is catalogued as SDSS J1126+2944.
This image provided by CU-Boulder shows the galaxy SDSS J1126+2944 taken with the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, with an arrow placed by the source pointing to a black hole that lost most of its stars. (NASA/CU-Boulder via AP)

I've developed a theory the Black Holes.. like the Big Bang.. and AGW.. are concoctions of the pseudo cosmology that has become the New Creation Myth in the post Christian West. The theories are inundated with contradictions.. ulterior motives.. and a singular lack of technological utility. They exist as objects of trascendental contemplation and have virtually no scientific credibility or benefit.. except to swallow up billions in research grants.

By not getting rapped up in the spiritual realm they have an ulterior motive,
You mean they deal with theories and reasons rather than excepting blind
faith? Blind faith had church officials saying the sun revolved around the
earth at one point.
I think I will look to science and obseration rather than dust off ancient text.

My Dad had a 66 Ford Custom.. same design in a 4 door. Loved that car, simple, clean lines.. lasted only 1 year.. drove like a 60s junk hunk though. Only the 69 Roadrunner with a 383 4Bl and stick outdid it in style, imho.

wherever i sit down my ars
Sometimes I look at pictures of the Universe with all the spinning galaxies, star clusters and all of the colors of the spectrum and the shapes and light and activity and the expanse of it all which is incomprehensible, and I think to myself, I cannot know,,nor would I want the ability to do so. It is fascinating.

My cousin had one of those Roadrunners.

Just the opposite.. modern cosmology and AGW have ditched the Western Scientific Method (originating in the great Catholic universities of the Middle Ages).. and is accepted solely on the basis of faith. In fact in things like the Big Bank and AGW it is now an imposed orthodoxy. Dissension will lead to expulsion an end to your academic career.

But it builds character.

It's an ugly box with wheels! Punched out in the millions, the early TV commecials got your attention, Tiger in your TANK! my little brother smashed three or four of them. I hate cars.
