Liberal caucus chair Francis Scarpaleggia denies that a fear of leaks is behind the ban.

“The rule across the board is that whether you are the Prime Minister, or a member of Cabinet, or the chair of the caucus, or an ordinary member of the caucus, you leave your BlackBerry or your tablet at the door,” Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Ralph Goodale (Wascana, Sask.) told The Hill Times last week.

“Two things: you should be paying attention. Caucus is a very precious rare two hours every week when members of the caucus get to talk to each other and the Prime Minister in the most candid of ways. You need to make sure that the conversation is confidential. And secondly, you need to make sure that nobody is distracted. While the conversation is going on, we need to pay attention to each other. That’s what it is about.”

The Conservative Party also does not allow its caucus members to carry their mobile phones into the national caucus meeting. The NDP, however, has no such prohibition.

My stance on this is the same as it would have been with Harper. If it was a cabinet meeting I would totally agree. Not so much with a regular caucus meeting.
