Sewer lines aren't sexy! :)

You can only do that for so long too. You can't go for a boat ride out of L.A. without dodging turds every 50'.

They are not doing it forever. They are doing it for a couple of days.

The has nothing to do with anyone's sensse of ecology and everything to do with Quebec-hate.

P.S. You can't walk down a street in L.A. without running into turds.

lot's of opinions on this poopie thing. Why not find some way,,,like those compost boxes in lot's of peoples back yards,,to recycle the poop and maybe treat it so it could be used and maybe even sold,,,as fertilizer. Might run your guests off at the back yard BBQ but it's a thought on ways to keep the brown trout's outa the river ways.

They have to get rid of it first in order to fix their sewage system.

NO they don't. It is just cheaper to do it this way. You would be the first to bitch if a refinery dumped it's waste on the ground before fixing their treatment center.

They're going to relocate the expressway, which means that the major sewer line has to be relocated and repaired; it's 5m in diameter. You can't work on it when it's full of sewage, as others have said.

Actually they can. Just costs more to do it right.

Haha! In the good old days every family had an outhouse in the back yard. Their poop went into a six foot hole. It took years to start filling up and then it got buried and a new hole got dug. Outhouses didn't cause any pollution to the waterways.

We had outhouses in a court we lived in back in the late fifties. Community shower and bathrooms too.

What you don't know-well one of the many things you don't know-is that people added lime & ashes down the hole both to cut the smell and adjust the soil Ph-then a shade tree would be planted on top of the old location.

The reason the water table wasn't affected much is because it was a minor addition to the soil and because water wells were located far away.

The big, big difference in that analogy is that oil is not biodegradable and poop is. As soon as that poop hits the ocean, it is a rich supply of food for marine life. If that were an oil spill, it would leave a trail of death behind it in the marine ecosystem.

Apples and oranges.

Perhaps another option would be to not relocate the expressway there or actually treat the sh-it in the sewer line and don't put anymore into it until the expressway is moved.

How do you 'not put any more into' the sewer? Get everyone to leave the city for a week?

How do you do it then? Please enlighten us.

Seems to me that many cities have had to deal with this over the years, no reason that Montreal can't

Let's dump some crude oil in the Bow in downtown Calgary and test the theory out, shall we?

Montreal has never had a proper sewage treatment program.

That's pretty true. Toronto's is so antiquated that they dump about a billion litres of sewage onto Lake Ontario, every year. I also used the watch the sewage move in and out and in again, into Halifax harbour as the tide ebbed and flowed. I understand that Victoria is the same way.
