I believe it was Susan who wrote "The Dumbing Down of America" If I'm remembering correctly which is always in question. I don't necessarily agree with all she believes but she is very smart.

Nothing cryptic about that. Certain teachings were meant for certain cultures. Not necessarily meant for everyone. Emic is another word I like.

The more I look into the Scriptures, the more I experience the layers of truth there.

While the scribes of Scripture present a microscopic viewpoint of local time and place and culture, the Author projects a telescopic view which incorporates all time, place and peoples. The Spirit and study bring both perspectives into view for those who earnestly and sincerely seek.
I'm not sure inner conflict and internal struggles are part of the 'yourself' part. More like it is part of the path that gets you there.
I was referencing your state of mind from when you were about 30 as at that age most people are mature enough to speak for themselves. That would be when you could confess to if you have faith or not. Being in an RCC school doesn't qualify you as a
'Christian', it qualifies as you being a child in a RCC School, the off the Reservation version of that same type of 'control'.

By His design, the body of Christ transcends every human biological and sociological grouping, including religious denomination.
The isn't anybody alive that doesn't fit into one of the 7 churches.

To me, a bunch of people who can't agree on anything isn't very compelling. Just my opinion. That and a quarter might buy a pack of Wrigley chewing gum .
