Religions are fairy tales for adults. Should we encourage them to grow up?

Northern Ontario,
A previous post should have read...
JLM, what about those that feel that their beliefs are correct and they require converting all others? Like atheists do all the time? not just the muslim extremists, or the christian extremists.

You could use a course in reading comprehension. Nowhere did I recommend changing anyone of killing anyone. Religion can be a two edged sword- intelligent people will recognize and use it accordingly. As I would never think of ramming religion down anyone's throat, neither would I try ramming atheism down anyone's throat. Believe what you want to believe- don't necessarily act on it!

Proverbs 3:12 For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

If you are not a part of the solution to the evil I showed religions doing then you are a part of the problem. Ask your wife if that is not so.

We should encourage critical thinking and science in schools. We already do to an extent. If the result is people becoming less religious then OK. If not, whatever. Religion is personal. People should be equipped to make intelligent decisions and if we do that and they still believe, what else can we do? Intelligent people can be religious and there are good arguments in favour of theism.

There was at one time but that was before the mainstream institutionalised homophobia and misogyny.

As I stated in the O.P., if they cannot do better then we should help them fail as they are holding back the more moral people.

I am a male but support feminists. Here are some of the reasons why.

Do you mean there were good arguments for theism at one time?

Yes. When they were seekers after God and not idol worshipers like Christians and Muslims have become.

God back then could have been defined as the best rules and laws to live life by as is quite apparent when looking at how they used to alter scriptures and change words just to seek and double check what they thought.

This scholar speaks of that at about the 16 min. mark.

http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/03132009/watch.html

Rabbi Hillel, the older contemporary of Jesus, said that when asked to sum up the whole of Jewish teaching, while he stood on one leg, said, "The Golden Rule. That which is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the Torah. And everything else is only commentary. Now, go and study it."

Please listen as to what is said about literal reading.

"Origen, the great second or third century Greek commentator on the Bible said that it is absolutely impossible to take these texts literally. You simply cannot do so. And he said, "God has put these sort of conundrums and paradoxes in so that we are forced to seek a deeper meaning."

Humans always look for simple answers to the world's problems. The conspiracy theorists among us always look for one scapegoat to peg everything on. They will point to the Jews, or the Illuminati, or to religion as the problem, but this sort of reasoning (if you can call it that) is simplistic to say the least.

Religion, homophobia, and misogyny are three mutually exclusive topics. A study done in the UK found that religious people are more left-wing than non-religious people, though for any of you who known any Anglicans, this should be no surprise. Furthermore, some of the most homophobic or misogynistic people I know are non-religious rednecks from BC and Alberta. Sure, there are certain lots of religious folks who are misogynistic and/or homophobic, but there are also lots of religious folks who are not either of those.

Just in case you needed proof that religion doesn't really affect a person's attitudes or conduct.

Well, not in Briddin, BC, or Alberta leastways.

You are not fit to teach men.

Two biblical tenets against women but ok, religions have nothing to do with promoting misogyny, to those who do not care about the plight of women that is.

They often are but idol worshipers are conditioned to ignore anything that would effect their idols.

Some whose moral sense has not been compromised by their religions will move left but the right wingers just put their fingers in their ears and say la la la la, or of their God they say, -------

Great excuse for slaughtering "heretics" and "pagans" and sexually molesting children, too!

So, all in all, a force for good in the world.

......and blowing yourself up to kill infidels.

Funny you say that, I was thinking that exact same idea whilst reading your endless excuses for 'the science' on the AGW thread

He can't... It's God's will

I made no excuses.

I asked you questions that you completely dodged.

Yes get rid of them all and end all religions which will require brute force and highly intrusive measures. This is guaranteed to work as a belief in something is at the instinct level.

People gathering to share in experiences of the spiritual senses is as natural as sunshine that has spanned two species of human.

spiritual senses and religion are two very different things, religions try to sell spirituality to the
public, thinking they own that part of life, not true, religions are just like any corporation trying
to gather as many clients and money as they can.

You cannot remove God's religion; because it is a matter of guidance.
In other words: God has misguided you, but He guides others, and God is only giving you respite so that the transgression of atheists is exposed to people in general; and God Himself will eradicate the atheism and idolatry with its many forms of joining others with God Most Gracious.

So how is it a matter of guidance and misguidance?

Religious folks who hold your interpretation of the Bible can definitely be using the Bible to promote misogyny, but it's hardly a mainstream interpretation. Instead, it's an interpretation that takes little snippets here and there out of context to try and promote bigotry. Similarly, some folks have used secular concepts such as Darwinism to promote racism and genocide, which are also out of context attempts at promoting bigotry.

The key to reducing bigotry is to actually address bigotry itself, and not by addressing some sort of overarching social, cultural, or religious dynamic that is perceived to have some sort of loose correlation with bigotry. To do so is bigotry itself because it negatively stereotypes and generalizes large groups of people.

Guidance and misguidance
God guides whomever He wants to guide; God only knows who deserves the guidance, and so He will guide him, in order to reward him in Paradise in heaven.
You cannot guide anyone even if you like him and you are earnest to bring him to God's religion: that God is One without associate or son and to believe in all the messengers or apostles of God including Jesus and Mohammed, and to believe in the Next Life.

(Quran 10: 100. No soul can believe [according to your will, Mohammed], but only according to God's leave [to His angels to inspire him e.]
And He lays [psychological] illness on those who do not use their reason [but they hold fast with the traditions of their fathers.]
------------------------------------------------
e It means: God gives permission to His angels to let him long to the belief, and make him desire in it, by means of inspiring into him, so that he will believe and convert.

On the other hand, those who do not deserve the guidance, because of their wrong-doing, God will leave them to Satan and his devils to suggest to them and take control of them, and they being unaware, so that they will increase in error and misguidance, and die as unbelievers and go to Hell in the Next Life.
