GO, CANADA, GO:canada:

Watching the lead-up to the first match right now. I don't normally follow soccer and thus I know little about the rules of the game. I am watching the World Cup to show support for our ladies and wish only that they do their level best and have fun. Apparently the stadium is sold out and it already looks like a sea of red.

Compared to the men's' soccer this is really slow. Not very entertaining.

womens soccer may not be as quick as the mens game but they do not fall on the ground and pretend to be injured the way they do in Europe or Latin America in the mens game

watched Netherlands vs New Zealand and it was a good, tough match with the Dutch winning 1-0

Women's football is a joke, like most women's sport. That's why this women's World Cup is only being shown on BBC Three in Britain, a channel which has so few viewers it is to be taken off the air next year and available only to be viewed online. The fact that it's on BBC Three just shows the status on women's football in Britain.

Women's football may be quite popular in North America where you have bad tastes in "sport", but it's just treated as a joke in Britain. We watch proper football here. I bet last night's Champions League Final between Juventus and Barcelona will have pulled in more global viewers than any match in this women's World Cup will, even the Final.

Also, England are playing the Republic of Ireland in a friendly in Dublin later this afternoon. I bet that match will pull in more viewers on ITV1 than any of those matches in the birds' World Cup, and it's only a friendly.

# 1 Germany over Ivory Coast in a mismatch 10-0

it was clear from the very beginning of the match that the IC players did not know the first thing about defense - it was like a shooting gallery with the Germans firing away at the goalie

IC players are good athletes with lots of size and speed - but terribly lacking in skill - hopefully, some day their program will vastly improve as it is only now getting government support

The Yanks didn't play well in that game. When they went 1-0 up it was against the run of play, and the Aussies certainly merited their equaliser. They were probably the better team in the first half. They didn't play badly for a country where rugby and cricket rule ("soccer" - of the women's variety - is actually very popular in the US, probably more than in any other country, which is why the US have done so well).

FRANCE VS ENGLAND later in Group F

England will use the experience of defeat by the world's top-ranked team Germany when they face France in their Women's World Cup opener on Tuesday, says boss Mark Sampson.

The Lionesses were outclassed in a 3-0 loss in November and face a French team who beat them by that score at Euro 2013.

France are ranked third in the world, three places above Sampson's side.

"We learnt some big lessons and since then the team has evolved," he said of the Germany match.

Sampson is confident he will be able to pick from his full squad, despite England having several players recovering from injury and illness, including captain Steph Houghton.

Striker Jodie Taylor has had a recent knee operation, while two unnamed players have suffered from food poisoning before the first of two games at the 13,700-capacity Moncton Stadium.

"We're assessing a couple of players in relation to the illness," said Sampson, who decided not to lead a training session on the pitch the day before the game.

"The positive thing was that we had all 23 take part in a full training session on Sunday. I'm confident we are in a great place to pick from that 23."

England have never been beyond the quarter-final stage at a World Cup, but in his first major tournament since succeeding Hope Powell, Sampson is hoping his team can progress to the last four at least.

As well as defeat by France in 2013, England were knocked out of the 2011 World Cup by the same opponents on penalties.

"France are probably ahead of us at the minute, the world rankings don't lie," said Sampson.

"When we are at our best we are at their level and we can win this match, but we haven't done it enough."

England have not beaten France since 1974 and the match will take place in the French-English bilingual city of Moncton, near Canada's east coast, at 18:00 BST on Tuesday.

In their other Group F fixtures, England meet Mexico, ranked 25th in the world, in Moncton on 13 June and Colombia, ranked 28th, on 17 June in Montreal.

Sampson, 32, described the Germany game as a "horrible experience" at the time, but said it showed him his team need to be tactically flexible during the tournament.

He has also acted on player feedback by telling them his team two days before the match against France. Previously, he has named his starting line-up closer to games.

Sampson believes he will be under more pressure now his father has arrived to watch the opening match - "he's my biggest judge" - but is unconcerned by England's final friendly loss to hosts Canada on 30 May.

His team in the 1-0 defeat featured several fringe players, and he added: "Our training is intense - more intense than in matches.

"It's reflected in our GPS data, in our total distance covered, our high-speed runs, our tackles, our passes. We always felt we could get that work into the players."

Soccer isn't that popular in the US. It is way down the list of followed sports. They are just better and have good university programs.

Colombia - Mexico = 1-1

the match featured far too many fouls and stoppages from players pummeling each other - referee did not have command of the game and I wonder if there wasn't some kind of language barrier between her and the players

Women's football is.

France beats England 1-0

Hot off the Presses- ENGLAND STILL SUCKS

Bollocks. England played really well against the third-best team in the world. France and their fans probably thought they'd put four or five past England yet England were much stiffer opposition than they imagined and the French were disappointing.

England head coach Mark Sampson said his side produced a "strong" performance as they lost 1-0 to France in their Women's World Cup opener.

Eugenie Le Sommer scored the only goal at Moncton Stadium and England struggled for an equaliser despite improving towards the end of the match.

"I would suggest fans stick with us. We have taken a top team right to the last minute," said Sampson, 32.

"You have to understand the level of competition."

England scored 52 goals in 10 games to qualify but could only manage three shots against France.

"Of course we are disappointed with the result," added Sampson, who is managing in his first major tournament.

"But, from the objective of giving ourselves a platform to build on, we have achieved."

England - just like the men's side - also weren't helped by diabolical refereeing decisions going against them, including a blatant elbow by Frog midfielder Camille Abily on England defender Laura Bassett in the England penalty area which left Bassett with a bruised cheek. It should have been a straight red card for Abily yet, incredibly, no action at all was taken by the Greek referee.

Sampson said he felt England had been "let down" by the officials.

"If you see her face on TV screens, you will see what the decision should have been and we were disappointed with that," the former Bristol Academy boss said.

"We were told before the tournament that we would be protected if we abided by the rules. I think we have been let down by that one - and so has she."

Women's football isn't a big sport in England and the women's England team used to be the butt of jokes at international football tournaments. But now they are improving at each tournament they reach. They should still easily qualify from this group by beating lowly Mexico and Colombia.

Also, remember that England lost 2-1 against Italy in their opening match of Women's Euro 2009 and still went on to reach the Final of that tournament.

And if the USA had played France and they played as badly as they did against Australia a couple of days ago they would have got battered.

Pfft... all that and England still SUCKS

52 goals in the ten qualifying games.

Reduced third best team in the world to just one goal thanks to using a formation that baffled them - and all with a referee that clearly favoured France and who was very lenient with them. Had around three stonewall penalties denied and Frog midfielder Camille Abily should have been given a straight red for her deliberate elbow in the face on England defender Laura Bassett.

Lost 2-1 against Italy in the opening match of Euro 2009 but still went on to reach the Final against Germany. There's still a long wait to go yet in this tournament.

England will still qualify from the group thanks to what will surely be wins against Mexico and Colombia.
