Denmark needs to expand their juniors program and nowadays it's an easy thing to do with the resumption of the military draft in Ukraine and Russia - there are plenty of teens who are only too eager to avoid three years of enslavement and deployment into combat. So just expand the juniors league and there will be plenty of players who will gladly join their ranks.

Good comment from Ferraro about no over-the-top celebrations by Canada........as he said - no need to rub it in.

Might be a tad early but it looks like we will be playing Slovakia on Sunday.

I've been thinking the celebrations (not just in this game) have been a little contrived. I don't like it.

Hopefully making it to the quarterfinals for the very first time will spur them to do just that, gopher.

Contrived? Come on, Cannuck............they are teenagers FPS.

Good question..........who will be in net against the Slovaks? As Ray just mentioned both of our goalies have been solid so wouldn't be surprised to see Comrie between the posts - he deserves the chance.

I heard there aren't many rinks in Denmark. Did I hear it right, 15? There are probably 5,000 in Canada. Pretty hard to gain traction when the development opportunity is so lopsided.

"According to the IIHF, there are 25 hockey rinks in the whole of Denmark. There are more than 7,600 in Canada."

First semi-final underway. Russia vs Sweden.

12:45 Wallmark of Sweden takes first penalty and Russia on PP.

No joy for Russia on PP and no SOGs either.

5:51 - nasty, nasty hit into the boards by Russian player Mammon draws 2-minute penalty. Sweden on PP.

1 SOG for Swedes but no goal. Mammon also drew a 10-minute misconduct so Russia will be down 1 defenceman.

Russia has edge on SOGs at 12 to 6 but 1rst period ends scoreless. Pretty good pace to the game so far.

19:25 in 2nd P and Sweden draws another penalty putting Russia on their second PP of the game. 19:04 and Sweden gets one back when Russia is called for a high-stick and it's 4 on 4 hockey for a minute and 35 seconds.

17:23 - Sweden has a 31 second PP but unable to get a goal in the net.

13:28 Mammon misconduct over.

Oops............Mamin is correct spelling of Russian players name. Apologies to Russia.

8:42 and Russia's Sharov puts a beaut over the shoulder of Swedish goalie and we finally have a goal. Now Russia is back on the PP.

With 34 seconds left in their PP, Russia puts another on the board and leads Sweden 2 - zip with 7:10 left in the period.

4:14 Sweden takes holding penalty and Russia back on PP.

Swedes survive Russian PP with 1:43 left in period.

:59.8 Russia puts a puck in the Swedish net but the Russian player is pushed into the net and the puck goes off his skate blade into the net - officials rule no goal.

End of 2nd P: Russia 2 - Sweden 0. SOGs Russia 22 - Sweden 13.

Glad to be inside watching hockey today as there is a howling snowstorm outside. Sure hope Sweden can re-group and get a couple of goals to tie the game. Just heard that Robbie Fabri will not return for Canada as he is suffering from a leg injury - Brayden Point will take his place on the line. Godla will be the net-minder for the Slovaks.

18:29 Sharov gets his second of the game to put Russia up by 3 and I fear that could very well put paid to any chance by the Swedish team for a come back.

Gotta say that the Swedish goalie has not been sharp in this game.
18:07 and Swedes get a PP.

Not a single SOG for Sweden on that PP.

I don't know who was favored to win this game but it is definitely the Russian kids who are playing the better game both offensively and defensively - if they hold onto to win and it looks as though they will it will be due to a very determined effort by the team.

8:30 and Sweden finally gets on the board,

7:21 and Mamin restores the Russian's 3-goal lead, a minute and 9 after the Swedish goal.

3:59 to go and it looks like Sweden will playing in the Bronze medal game tomorrow as Russia advances to the Gold Medal round awaiting the winner of this afternoons semi-final between Team Canada and Team Slovakia which is set to get underway in just over an hour.

2:14 and Swedish goalie has left the net.

22.9 Wallmark puts one in the net but he interfered with the goalie and it's no goal.

And that's the game folks..............Russia wins it 4 to 1.

So yeah, I am nervous, very nervous. Will not be posting at all during the game as I don't want to miss a single moment.

GO, Canada, GO!

ROCK THE ICE KIDS

...........and have some fun out there.

:canada:

First intermission Canada ahead by a goal. The Slovaks are keeping our guys honest and giving them a good game so far. Petan got the goal on a PP.

Discipline guys, keep it clean and play hard. GO CANADA!

End of 2nd P and Canada leads 3 - 1. Petan got his second goal of the game then Theodore put in Canada's 3rd in the dieing minutes of the period only to see the Slovaks score on a 3 on 1 with 2.8 seconds left. Our kids are playing well but have to tighten up a bit as their passing was a little loosey-goosey for awhile. Slovakia is not going away and their goalie has been standing on his head for most of the game.

Dig deep guys. Stay out of the box and play your hearts out. We are with you all the way.

I don't know which was more fun, watching Nic Petan get his hat-trick or watching his Mum and Dad celebrate.

So glad to see Anthony Duclair finally get a goal, he's been so close so many times in the last couple of games.

Godla has to be a star of the game - he did everything he possibly could for his team.

We are going for Gold!!!

The Bronze Medal game goes at 1PM PST and the Gold Medal game is at 4:30 PM PST, gopher.

It never got scarey but it did get tense there for awhile until our kids got their legs under them and found their rhythm. Of course, a couple of PP's helped out a bit though I must say the refs really pushed the line on a couple of those calls both on our kids and the Slovaks. Really disappointed that Godla didn't get the creds he deserved - glad to see the fans shouting his name out - they appreciated what a great game he had.

some local reporters were commenting on the series and they agreed that the problem with why the USA does not produce as many great players as does Canada is because we send too many of our players to college when they should be playing juniors

Kobe Bryant was saying pretty much the same re the AAU and basketball - the USA is starting to fall behind international teams because we need to send our players into developmental programs, not college.

all of canada is deeply rooted in hockey, has had minor and junior hockey for many years, only part of the
u.s. is like that, the rest dabbles, And the rest couldn't care less, and if a canadian is visiting in
many areas of the u.s., they can't watch hockey, it isn't available.

many canadian hockey players get scholarships to u.s. colleges, and many of them move on to either the ahl
first, then into the nhl, but of course it is common that most players trying to reach the nhl, don't
ever make it, that is just the norm for all sports, but one has to try if they desire.

many college players are signed by an nhl team without ever being drafted, and some players who were never
drafted, and didn't go to college finally get signed to an nhl contract.

because of the 'cap' nhl managements scout the colleges and other areas thoroughly to sign players to a
modest salary, and also to find the players who have slipped thru the cracks, and
didn't get the chance.

chris tanev is a great example of 'one of those', he was very small for a long
time, wasn't drafted, not much interest in him at all, canucks found him in a
small college, (forget thename), and he had grown a lot, very late, and his skills
were above average, they signed him, and he hasn't looked back, probably canucks
best defenseman now.

Bronze Medal game will get underway in about half an hour - depending on how much pre-game chat there is by Duf and his side-kick. I am cheering for Slovakia simply because I think Godla deserves a medal, and the rest of the team too, but mainly Godla.

Good luck to them all and may the very best team win.

Woo Hoo..................16:38 in the 1rst and Slovakia is up by 2!!!!!

GO SLOVAKIA!

13:02 and shots are 7 to 1 for Slovakia.

9:38 and Sweden gets on the board...........darn it. Nylander with the goal.

7:53 and Slovakia draws a hooking penalty so Sweden on the PP.

Oh poop, Slovakia draws another penalty and will be down 2 players for 1 minute and 13 seconds.

Well they survived the 2-man advantage and just have to get thru 12 seconds of 5 on 4.

YIPEE they got thru without letting Sweden score!

3:48 and Sweden gets the equalizer........darn, darn, darn.

2:50 Oh good, Sweden has drawn a tripping penalty.........Walmark the bad boy .........Go Slovakia.....get that lead back kids.

I would love to believe that we will win Gold this year. But after last several years of heartbreaks, I will assume they will do it again (until the final seconds tick off). A silver will be a huge improvement from last year however.

No joy on the PP and the period is winding down.

End of 1rst: Tied 2 - 2

It would be absolutely heart-breaking to go through the tournament with such a fantastic record then lose to Russia in the Gold Medal game - however, as you say, a Silver would be a great improvement on past year's performances.

That said, I am holding out for Gold all the way. I BELIEVE!

Second underway - Swedes out-shot Slovakia 15 - 10 in the first. Dig deep, Slovakia!

11:54 to go in second and Slovakia on PP! Come on guys........you can do it.

Argh..........they get a puck in the net but draw a penalty at the same time. 4 on 4 for a minute, 22. Goal waved off.

Swedes on PP for 35 seconds. No joy for Sweden............yeah.

Slovakia is giving the Swedes a game...........no give up in these guys and some great forechecking.

I don't remember seeing so many players simply fall down on the ice without any contact at all. Every single game so far players have blown tires for no reason at all. Really tricky ice, I guess.

That is one thing that historically Canada has failed at. Once we get religated to Bronze we tend to fold the tent. These guys want a medal, any medal.

End of 2nd period still tied 2 -2 but Sweden draws a cross-check penalty as time winds down and Slovak player still down on the ice. Ah that was nasty. Don't know if it will be a 2-minute or 5-minute - have to wait till start of 3rd.

Slovakia is doing well to keep the Swedes from scoring opportunities. Go Slovakia!

5-minute major to Swedes and Slovakia is on PP as 3rd P starts.

Yipee Yahoosie..............with just over 2 minutes left in what was a real lack lustre PP, Slovakia put one in the net! Well they got one and now lead 3 - 2.

Just past midway point in game and Slovakia doing a great job of keeping the Swedes out of the net.

2:25 to go and Sweden pulls their goalie

56.7 seconds left and Slovakia gets an empty-netter!!!!! Rock on Slovakia!

And that will do it......................Slovakia wins Bronze and the crowd goes wild!

Righteous win by Slovakia!

Godla is in tears and the coaching staff is going nuts..........lovin' every minute.

Cinderella team of the tourney.

The crowd goes nuts as Godla is chosen player of the game.

Reway, Godla and Jaros chosen players of the championship.

ROCK THE ICE, TEAM CANADA!
