Interesting thing about government workers and sick days in that they can bank them and at retirement get cashed out for unused ones. Which makes it an entitlement, not an insurance policy.

Up until the early 70s we could bank the unused ones up to a maximum of 250 days and then at retirement get paid out for 1/2. When I retired I got paid out for just over 60 days, earned prior to about 1974. Of course all that came to a crashing halt, as a trade off for long term sick, which I suppose was fair, just a trade off from the healthy guys to provide more benefits for the sickies. A little later the short term sick leave was reduced to 3/4 days pay per day off sick. I thought that was a good idea as you'd think it would stem abuse.

When I lived in Port Hardy my wife at the time worked for the school board. Be late 80s I think. Her boss at the time retired with a full year worth of sick days to be paid out for.

Yeah, back in the day you could bank a full year's worth, but I am positive you could only get paid out for half.

That is just ridiculous to me, sick days should be for being sick, expire at the end of a year or something.

However, I do think they should be able to be used for preventative care though.

My Dad (who some considered old fashioned) thought paid holidays were a desecration- "W.T.F. would a man expect to get paid for NOT working"? (He's probably doing cart wheels in his grave today)

I don't have a problem with paid vacation, hell I don't have a problem with paid sick days. But banking 'sick' days just seems wrong. Especially a ridiculous number like 6 months or a years worth.

I have zero problem with banked sick days being paid out by private corporations...the little guy should get as many benefits as possible their top executives screw the company blind and get paid millions to leave

government employees should be fairly paid a liveable wage including sick days

no paid outs for banking days though

How about the benefits paid out are evenly applied to all employees rather than shareholders who would be limited to a 5% gain , if a loan is taken that rate is 3% so the person still makes a profit, just not very much until his loan is off the books. If the company makes 30% profit the prices either come down (preferred) or the bonus checks are bigger for everybody rather than the CEO's who are in a position to manipulate events so their bonuses are bigger and the lower rates disappear for the consumers.

but you can't dictate to private industry how they will pay their people other than setting a bar which they can't drop below

I have to totally agree (although some may call me a hypocrite for taking advantage of the perk myself). The consumer is the one taking the sh*t kicking these days and I fully agree with no perks for C.E.O.s. W.T.F. would someone earning $100 an hour or more need perks. It's nothing short of greed. Actually what it is, is white collar crime!

The consumer can set a bar above which price he/she won't purchase.:)

Of course it's ridiculous. Most of Taxslaves fantasies are.

Banked sick days are an alternative to short term dissability. The idea actually saves the government money because STD is not included in the benefit package. You don't get to use them when you retire. Like any other time, you would be required to provide a doctors note if you were off work for a specified time (where I work it's 3 days). If somebody took all their banked sick time at retirement, that would be the fault of management for not doing their jobs.

Well now it's start all to make a little more sense.

If you are government employee cannuck then I understand how it is possible for you to be so completely lost.

With all you're added government benefits and perks it's easy understanding why you see the world soo differently ,
Then us hard working people who have learned to survive without all that extra fluff government workers take for granted.

Each time I read you're posts I wonder why it is someone could be so totally lost like you are.

Well it's not to complicated. most government workers would be living in a unrealist situation like they do, where the get payed very high wage and produce next to nothing.

It's a distorted reality where you don't understand the true value of money. It also explains why you're different then us.

Don't be so silly. I took a pay cut to work at my current job. There's far more money to be made in the private sector. Anybody that has a clue knows that.

As if that isn't bad enough, but he's not happy until he beats on a few seniors.

Northern Ontario,
If you work for the government instead of the private sector It's because no private company would let you be on a forum all day...
you're just too bloody lazy to work a full day.....all government employees are lazy bums....

No, SOME gov't employees are lazy bums: some gov't employees are diligent and hard working. The private sector has its share of sloths too. Quite often employees can look busy while accomplishing F*(k all. The trick is to work smart first and hard second.

Maybe it's time to replace our thoughts of Cannuck with other thoughts........ might be worth a try to see if our outlook improves. I'm going to try it one hour at a time!:)
