It's a slippery slope. Are letters to the editor violent? They'll be used in the profile....

or giving thumbs up to a jew hater or nazi or alah snackbar nut lover...nah.

most of our hate speech laws and incitement nonsense are already on the books...it's the new stuff they've planned we've gotta watch out for.

What kind of letter? Letter with mysterious powder? YEP. Letter where by a protester has used his pen as a sword?

Violence by word...not a thing yet.

No reality's gonna reach out and smack you from your computer - and I believe it's quite oppressive to assume people don't have the brains to sort out shyte from sure

Then perhaps the media should stop broadcasting anything at all from the Mid-East as I doubt drone attacks on wedding parties is ever not going to raise a few eyebrows and if it doesn't then we have become what we fear the most.

Sounds like window dressing to me.

This won't deter terrorists but it will play nicely to his base of old, luddite farts.

To state a positive, I don't think it will have any impact on 'civil liberties' but I could be wrong.

"The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society."

Stephen Harper does have a hard time demonstrating the justifications of his policies. Never too late to start practicing.

Two words changes us back from having any freedoms or civil right, it's called Martial Law and Treadeau invoked it when Politicans were being killed so you have a live example of just what that actually means.

I wouldn't have an issue with that being declared under the circumstances.

The War Measures Act, which Trudeau used during the October Crisis, has been repealed and replaced with the Emergencies Act, which like all laws is subject to the Charter. All the Charter does, though, is add an extra step for Prime Ministers to limit our freedoms. They have to convince the Supreme Court it's reasonable, which is vague enough to essentially mean the PM just needs a compliant court.

This stuff sounds all wishy-washy to me.

Can't we just strengthen Parliament security and call it a day?

They want sweeping power to protect their own asses, both literal and political. Steve has already proven he won't put up with folks that don't agree with some his stupid ideas.
I want to be able to walk downtown and not have to worry about some goomer {or goomette} putting holes in me for my phone or my coat.
There's something wrong with you people that are ok with 1984 type ****, and it ain't gonna make you any safer, you will have to worry about both sides, just because you agree with them doesn't mean they like you

it could be used later to indicate mental/emotional deterioration/instability

actually anyone who is motivated could do that with anything in public print, it speaks to how we present ourselves and what that indicates about us psychologically such as posts etc. if someone wants to set you up, they will

Parliament security was and is just fine, we can't ramp up security everywhere....look at the white house...they can't even prevent people from jumping over the fence, and they are always armed to the teeth

look at Britain a few years back...the queen awoke to some numbnuts stalker in her bedroom

we can't live that way, security of that sort is false, freedom requires that we not panic
