Highways to become speedways!

When you consider that some European countries' motorways have 80mph speed limits; Britain has 70mph speed limits (but plans are underway to increase it to 80mph); and Germany doesn't have any speed limits on its autobahns, having to break the speed limit (which is just 62mph on most Canadian highways) just to go 74mph really does take the biscuit.

If Europeans were driving in Canada they'd all be ramming your back bumpers to tell you to get a bloody move on.

Sh*t, I did 80 to 85 mph in my Big Truck on the open roads in Texas...

...and and JLM I've had front tire, superwide tire and trailer tires blow outs at that speed.. because of the heat of the road at 110F.

You control the rig and slow to the side of the road.

As for a front tire blow out, you speed up a little to keep control of your steering, move to the side of the road, then start to slow down.

Mind you, the weather is always pretty nice in Texas.. LOL

We are a loooooooooooooooong way from that ever happening. A good percentage of drivers don't even understand what is a safe distance for following vehicles. The "two second rule" is an absolute minimum and personally I prefer and try to abide by 3.

Because as I said, people should be driving according to their skill and the road conditions not according to some sign posted on the side of the road nor racing for the sake of speed...

that's why people get into trouble and kill others...they don't know their own skill level...

I used to be on the road every day...skill level is refined due to experience, you can anticipate what the azzhat in front of you is doing because you see it daily

that driver is very different than pappy who is ambling along on a highway once a month...I don't want him doing 150 k on the road regardless of the allowance...

if one is driving to a destination 2 hours away...it isn't going to change your time hardly at all by increasing your speed by 5 or 10 extra klicks ...but it could change whether or not you arrive alive

I never heard of a 2 second rule, it's always been 3 second rule or better for me.. must be a Canadian thing.. no wonder they always tailgate me here in Canada. :lol:

In a Big Rig, you leave more space and always look for an out, a lane or place to go in case of emergency.

which is why I hate driving with one of my girlfriends...she likes the middle lane...sets herself up all nicely and just goes along...she does not continually monitor what is going on around her and reduce or speed up according to need...makes me feel like a cat on on hot tin roof sitting there...

no we're not...we have created our own problem here by telling people how they should be driving instead of teaching them how to drive safely...

some people think 50 means drive 50 even on ice...'well I was doing the speed limit when I hit him'...yes you were you dumb bunny

A Big Rig in traffic should be driving the middle lane, in the slow lane you have traffic merging and exiting, and the fast lane or lanes you have people passing..

In most states, Big Rigs are NOT permitted to drive in the fast lanes, and they should adopt that here in Canada.

I agree....but here you have to drive in the slow lane...big rigs can pass here in the fast...I don't have an issue with that, they should be able to...when roads are icy like during freezing rain, I prefer to get behind a big rig a piece back and just stay there...on good roads, if I'm moving at a super fast rate and there is an empty rig barreling along, some are cool about taking you with them, other rigs then leave space for the truck and you when you pass them...it's a nice stress free ride when it happens

I've been saved more than once by truckers warning me about upcoming speed traps...they are good if you are good to them

Yeah, do that here in Alberta and you're not going to have a windshield by the end of your trip.. Alberta uses little rocks or sand on the road.

haaaaaaaaaaaaa...lol... 401 here is very nice driving, kept in good condition, well salted and usually okay because of the volume of traffic

Yeah Boomer, they must have special gravel in Alberta, I had to put mesh over my lights and put in two windshields in one summer.
In regards to the skill level, I think it's going to get worse with all the 'improvements" they make on cars now, knobs that couldn't drive in the first place can now rely on **** like lights to tell you an accident" may be imminent" wtf ?
