I think the boys have met their match tonight not that either team seems to be taking the game too seriously. Getting another P.P. goal for Smyth seems to be Edmonton's main focus - thought that might backfire on them when Edler was serving the double minor. Guess Markstrom's main objective is just to get acquainted with the inside of the goal!
i didn't see the third goal, but team should have given him more help on the first two, fourth one
looked a bit soft.
don't know what jenson was trying to do on the 5th goal, but he
made the situation much worse, and puck ended up in the net.
good luck to 'ryan smyth', his last game, very emotional game for
him, and every time i saw him crying, i started too, so now my nose
is running, and i'm glad this is over, what an ending, even all of the
canucks came on the ice to shake his hand and say goodbye to him.
congratulations on a wonderful career ryan.
too bAd he didn't get that one more power play goal and break the
oiler record.
one more to go for canucks, nothing more to say about this game,
not very good, but again kassian looks very good, all of that potential
he showed for the past couple of years is beginning to show up,
big career ahead of him.

you bet, i agree, kassian sees everyone, makes crisp accurate passes, and sets others up all the time,
kesler has never done any of those things, and i don't know what all the fuss is about him, but i
do appreciate his hustle, checking, skating and desire, but he has never had any ability to help others,
and constantly shoots when he should be passing, he should be a winger, but he is a good faceoff guy.
another great asset of kassian's is his strength, he outmuscles others on the boards, and they have a
tough time taking the puck away from him. and he is a great skater.
it would be good if they could trade kesler for something very good coming back, because his reputation is
really good around the league, now is the time, before his value starts to go down.
It seems Kesler's reputation is much better than he really is. That being said it's the reputation in the press. Not sure what other GM's think. By the sounds of the offers for him at the trade deadline he might not be as sought as team1040 believes. I don't see him as much more than a third-line centre or second line winger. Yes, now is the time to trade him. Even if not for much because they are a better team without him.
kesler was injured sometime during the nashville series, didn't do much at all after that in
2011. i think that series against nashville was kesler's finest hour,
haven't seen him play that well since.
i'm thinking gillis dangled him out there at the trade deadline, but wanted way too much, just as he
did when he first was trying to trade luongo, 'reaching for the moon' again.
I was thinking more of the regular season that year. What I remember most at this late date was my daughter-in-law raving about him and she's a pretty avid Canuck follower! (for someone who lives near Calgary) -

that might have been his 30 plus goal season, not sure, he's a good player, but has never reached that
mark again, and yes, i have watched him closely from his first year, and he took a long time to settle
down and stop trying to go end to end by himself, most of the time he ended up crashing up in the
corner somewhere, or had it taken away. his energy was too much, but his brain power not so much,
when he matured a bit more he got better, then had a few good years for canucks, but after that playoff
year he has gone downhill, and also had too many injuries, now he is 30, so probably won't make it back
to those few best years he had, if they don't trade him this year, he will probably stay with canucks
for the rest of his time in the nhl, and thats not a bad thing, as he will
always be an asset on the team, but he is definitely overrated around the
league and also by canuck fans and management, but some g.ms might now
be studying his stats and taking a second look, he wasn't injured this
season, but didn't play as well as expected.
his defensive game has always been good, and still is.
2010-2011- he had 41 goals, but hasn't come near to that number Again.

Season series: The Vancouver Canucks have continued to dominate the Calgary Flames in the new Pacific Division the same way they did in the old Northwest Division, though the scores are no longer lopsided. Vancouver will go for the season sweep in the finale, but three of the first four wins have been by one goal, including one in overtime and another in the shootout.
Big story: With both teams already out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Flames will take a good look at the future with the NHL debut of Boston College forwards Bill Arnold and Jonny Gaudreau, both of whom signed entry-level contracts Friday after Gaudreau won the Hobey Baker Award as the top player in Division I college hockey.
Team Scope:
Flames: Gaudreau and Arnold had their "welcome to the NHL" moment before even joining the Flames for the trip to Vancouver: A private jet was sent to pick them up to fly to Calgary from the award ceremony in Philadelphia.
"That was it," Gaudreau said after practicing for the first time in Vancouver on Saturday. "The jet was a pretty amazing and then stepping out on the ice for my first NHL practice, those are two things I will never forget in my life."
Despite the jet, the Hobey Baker Award, and 80 points in 40 games this season, coach Bob Hartley was trying to dial down the expectations for Gaudreau.
"With the hype and everything it's normal when you carry the nickname 'Johnny Hockey,'" Hartley said. "But I've been in this league for many years, I've worked with tons of kids, and let's give him time. … I've seen myself or too many coaches or hockey guys go 'Wow' at a kid in the first week and suddenly, two or three months after, the diamond is not as shiny as what we thought."
Gaudreau, who is 5-foot-7, will start on a line with Arnold, his less-hyped center at BC, and fellow speedster Paul Byron. Neither newcomer is eligible to go to the AHL after the Flames' season ends Sunday.
"I don't want to get too high. I don't want to get too low," Hartley said of the new duo. "Let's have fun, let him play and we'll go from there."
Canucks: The Canucks will finish the season by celebrating their past with a pregame ceremony inducting Pat Quinn into the Ring of Honor, but the former coach, general manager and president may also play a role in their future.
Trevor Linden, who was named president of hockey operations on Wednesday, a day after Mike Gillis was fired as president and general manager, was picked second by Quinn at the 1988 NHL Draft. He called Quinn before his introductory press conference, and hinted Saturday night there may be a role for him in the organization.
"I am going to sit down with Pat," Linden told CBC's Ron McLean during an intermission interview. "Obviously for me he was a real mentor, and he's got a wealth of hockey knowledge, so we'll definitely sit down."
Quinn, 71, is perhaps best remembered for coaching the Canucks to the 1994 Stanley Cup Final before losing in Game 7 to the New York Rangers. He was also president and general manager from 1987-97, and may help Linden, who has been out of hockey since retiring in 2008, as a special adviser.
Who's hot: Flames center Jiri Hudler had a goal and an assist in a 5-3 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Friday, giving him five points during a four-game point streak. Fellow center Matt Stajan has three goals and three assists during a six-game pint streak, and 10 points in his past eight games. … Canucks right wing Zack Kassian had a goal and an assist in a 5-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night, giving him 14 goals and 29 points this season, both more than double the previous career highs for the promising power forward.
Injury report: Canucks forward Chris Higgins missed Saturday night's game in Edmonton with an illness and is questionable against the Flames. center Mike Santorelli (shoulder surgery) and defensemen Christopher Tanev (broken fingers) and Andrew Alberts (concussion) are out. … Flames defenseman TJ Brodie didn't take part in practice Saturday but coach Bob Hartley said after it was a "maintenance" day and he will be a game-time decision. Left wing Michael Cammalleri, who missed the game against Winnipeg on Friday with Illness, will play against the Canucks, but defensemen Ladislav Smid (upper body), Tyler Wotherspoon (shoulder) and Dennis Wideman (upper body) and forwards David Jones (shoulder), Mikael Backlund (upper body) and Markus Granlund (upper body) all are out.

good news. carolina won today, so even if canucks win tonight, they
will tie with carolina, but carolina have more ROW so will finish
ahead of canucks.
so, canucks will finish 25th, could do well in lottery.

Daniel appears to be seriously injured, hauled out on a stretcher after being driven into the boards. Sure hope it turns out to be minor, but it does look scary.
yeah, i wonder, he was never unconcious, but he definitely didn't move except he did wave his hand
for help it seems.
henrik did come back to the game, so i would think if it was looking serious he would have gone
with him to the hospital.
daniel definitely hit his head on the glass, hopefully there will be an update soon.
so much for team 1040 stating that torterella would be fired monday, from the interview with
linden, he will take his time, interview torterella and all of the players, then assess the
situation, and i think that will take a bit longer than tomorrow.
Yeah, I can't see a huge rush to get rid of J.T. I'd bet he's learned more in the past 6 months than in any previous year of coaching. The main thing of course is how the players relate to him. Maybe they've just "had it".

hope you caught the post game with taylor and valk, valk said it all for me, again, he has picked out
problems with torterella coaching for some time, not just tonight.
torterella will want players willing to play his style of coaching, this isn't the right team for
that, don't think they will change most of the players to suit him, he is a stubborn, do it my way,
that is the right way, or maybe he will just let them play 'their' way like he has been doing for
the past few games, definitely a different look, as the players are coaching themselves, and doing
a good job. he is just watching.

when torterella was asked the other day about how he felt about gillis being fired, he went into a long speech about the family, wife and kids,
how hard it is on them, we are have to think about that part of it, blah
blah, i would have liked to ask him how his wife and kids enjoyed his
little act in calgary, how hard is that on the wife and kids, they
had to sit there and watch him act out like a 5 year old, yeah torts

I probably won't watch much hockey now until the fall, I like to watch the play occasionally, I'm not too much into the politics of it. Besides I started planting the garden today, so that is starting to take over the thoughts of my limited mind. L.O.L. Crocuses are actually starting to bloom up here and we're getting buds on the trees.
