I wrote a letter to President Obama this past February to tell him about my experience with the Health Insurance Marketplace. I hoped he'd read it, and he did.

I may not be a supporter of the President. But now, I get mad when I see Obamacare dragged through the mud on television.

And even though I regularly tune in to conservative pundits, I'd like to tell them they're getting it wrong. Obamacare works.

That's an old fallacy goph.

Those Fortune 500 companies pay Billions in taxes that are used to, not only cover their medical exposure, but also pay for the >50% of Americans that don't pay Fed income taxes and still receive healthcare.

I know you don't like that little factoid, but it still doesn't change the facts.

Let’s introduce a new category into the discussion. So far we’ve had two. The first is that Obamacare may make it by the skin of its teeth. The second is that’s it’s a total failure and the worst thing since unsliced bread. Time for a third: It’s a huge success and a triumph and a historic achievement and an immeasurable benefit to the American people.
I’ll stake out this lonely ground, because the allowed media narratives have other things to do. The allowed narratives are, first, the hysterical made-up Republican one, which we must all treat with feigned respect and write it up as spoken as if it makes sense or is sincere. And the other allowed narrative is that the hysterical made-up Republican narrative may not be ENTIRELY the whole story, and maybe the truth lies somewhere in the middle between this and the never-reported or discussed actual liberal point of view (single payer). The next-best alternative, a robust defense of Obamacare has also been next to impossible to find. I’m here today to (not for the first time) provide this missing piece of the conversation.
Here it is, in brief. The American healthcare system was a disgraceful mess before Obamacare, leaving growing numbers of people uncovered in a system of unchecked and runaway wasteful costs. Since Obamacare was passed the standard has changed and we are moving toward humane universal coverage, like every other advanced nation. And the costs and delivery systems are finally subject to at least the beginnings of a discussion about costs and results. Sanity and humanity prevailed, for once.

This is something happening frequently in out politics today. Right wing extremists GOP Office holders, and other right wingers say stuff to news people, the news people know it is extreme and irrational, but they cannot say that they must treat what is extreme and irrational as if it is reasonable and supported by some facts to be "fair".

The ACA creates winners and losers. This is what distinguishes it from Social Security and Medicare. The losers under the ACA can always be mobilized on the basis of grievance. Obama and his pathetic acolytes will be forced to wage a never ending twilight struggle that will divide and weaken America. Obamacare will be permanent in the same way pancreatic cancer is permanent. See you hell.

Forget Obamacare, Vermont wants to bring single payer to America






In 1947, Saskatchewan began doing something very different from the rest of the country: it decided to pay the hospital bills for all residents. The system was popular and effective — and other provinces quickly took notice. Neighboring Alberta started a hospital insurance plan in 1950, and by 1961 all ten Canadian provinces provided hospital care. In 1966, Canada passed a national law that grew hospital insurance to a more comprehensive insurance plan like the one that exists today.


Saskatchewan showed that a single-payer health-care system can start small and scale big. And across the border, six decades later, Vermont wants to pull off something similar. The state is three years deep in the process of building a government-owned and -operated health insurance plan that, if it gets off the ground, will cover Vermont’s 620,000 residents — and maybe, eventually, all 300 million Americans.


"If Vermont gets single-payer health care right, which I believe we will, other states will follow," Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin predicted in a recent interview. "If we screw it up, it will set back this effort for a long time. So I know we have a tremendous amount of responsibility, not only to Vermonters."


When Shumlin ran on a single-payer platform in 2010, it was unprecedented. No statewide candidate — not in Vermont, not anywhere — had campaigned on the issue, and with good political reason. Government-run health insurance is divisive. When the country began debating health reform in 2009, polls showed single-payer to be the least popular option.


Shumlin just barely sold Vermont voters on the plan (he beat his Republican opponent by less than one percentage point). Then, he got the Vermont legislature on board, too. On May 26, 2011, Shumlin signed Act 48, a law passed by the Vermont House and Senate that committed the state to building the country’s first single-payer system.


Now comes the big challenge: paying for it. Act 48 required Vermont to create a single-payer system by 2017. But the state hasn’t drafted a bill that spells out how to raise the approximately $2 billion a year Vermont needs to run the system. The state collects only $2.7 billion in tax revenue each year, so an additional $2 billion is a vexingly large sum to scrape together.
