shelters are either run by churches and staffed by church members or not for profit and not for profit don't pay great but they would be staffed by professionals and volunteers... they would not be paid minimum wage
when I worked not for profit even admin assts were paid a livable wage...not great but at least 8 or 9 dollars more than minimum
I can't let this go TS. The point one of the points about being rich is that you collect taxes you don't pay them and giving is unheard of, government works for the rich who ensure they have enough loot to get reelected. Of course they do supply the jobs, I'll give you that, so where are these jobs today? China, Mexico Borneo anywhere but the west cuz the rich have sucked it dry and they don't care about you.

That situation has a pretty short "shelf life". Poverty is on a rampant increase while church activity and membership is on a fast decline. One of these days in the near future sumpins gotta give.

If you read the majority of opinions in this particular forum, there is no such thing as poverty. Everyone is hunky dory. In fact, most people live on welfare. The lazy p ricks have free tvs, shiny new cars, trips, food in the fridge, total medical coverage. You are on eeeeazy street if on welfare, there is no such thing as poverty.
And according to these good Christian people, there should be no safety net because no one makes mistakes, gets sick and can't support themselves, people are just willfully stupid, lazy and takers, everyone is a taker except for them and they will never need help or make a mistake in their life requiring assistance.

A situation where all the poverty is taken care of by the church. As far as welfare goes, there's a difference like night and day between how welfare treats it's clients, where there are children involved it is much like you say. If it's a single man who can't work due to a medical condition and doctor's order the treatment is vastly different, at least it is in British Columbia.
Not everyone thinks that way about all people, there's winners and losers, givers and takers, strong and weak. I'd say that at least 50% of those who find themselves in dire predicaments due to stupidity, when given a second chance adjust their modus operandi. Most people are generally reasonable.
Regardless of single or having children, here in Ontario welfare can not cover one's basic needs. No worries though, my fellow man and his suffering and misery are not my concern.

The answer is "Just fine, thanks."
The income tax is, in my opinion, not a very efficient or effective way to help ease the burden on folks (whether or not they are my "fellows" is another subject entirely). I'm comfortable with what I do, and what I spend, easing the burden on folks in need.
