Then someone will have to explain how this doesn't sort of doesn't promote the furtherance of conflict...

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
In Flanders Field, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

The next day, sitting on the back of an ambulance parked near the dressing station beside the Canal de l'Yser, just a few hundred yards north of Ypres, McCrae vented his anguish by composing a poem. The major was no stranger to writing, having authored several medical texts besides dabbling in poetry.

In the nearby cemetery, McCrae could see the wild poppies that sprang up in the ditches in that part of Europe, and he spent twenty minutes of precious rest time scribbling fifteen lines of verse in a notebook.

A young soldier watched him write it. Cyril Allinson, a twenty-two year old sergeant-major, was delivering mail that day when he spotted McCrae. The major looked up as Allinson approached, then went on writing while the sergeant-major stood there quietly. "His face was very tired but calm as we wrote," Allinson recalled. "He looked around from time to time, his eyes straying to Helmer's grave."

Does it really matter if some do? It seems to me the only thing that's offensive about this whole controversy are the people who tell others what things are supposed to mean. That's for each to decide for themselves as far as I'm concerned.
I agree.

I am well aware of that bru, I'm just saying, there is an element that some have interpreted as the promotion of furthering conflict.

I can see how they would come to that opinion.

I can also see that by my interpretation of the poppy, that a white one would be welcome along side my red one.

I don't know what it meant to the writer, and it probably means something different to others, but to me it would mean, that if your buddy falls you don't give up but keep going, like a baton race...

I don't disagree with either of you (Although your baton race comment made me squirt ginger ale out my nose DaS, lol), but both of you have pretty much confirmed how I see it.

and you're just a brainless twat that glorifies the killing. Wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that your favorite jack off movies are hamburger hill, we were soldiers, and saving private ryan.

I gotta say Gerryh you do outrage very well, but all that outrage deflates and hijacks the validity of your message.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

The Red Poppy really is a reminder that war is a terrible thing and does nothing to glorify war. I think the white poppy movement is an example of prejudice and intolerance towards veterans simply because it fails to acknowledge the above. It is easier to point fingers, call veterans and those who choose to remember the fallen, warmongers, than to look for common ground. That's not to say that there are not vets out there who might get their back up, there are, but most do not look back with nostalgia on war.

Quite frankly, an attempt at hijacking this observance is kind of pathetic and exemplifies lack of understanding or will to try.

Staples is an a*s*s*hole. This was a deliberate attempt to create conflict.
Then after they realized they had stepped on their peckers they changed their tune- What about strength of convictions-

Students don't care if 'white poppy' offends vets | Canada | News | Toronto Sun

OTTAWA - A handful of university students have hopped aboard the left-wing Rideau Institute's "white poppy" campaign for Remembrance Day, promoting their pacifist ideology by piggybacking on the Royal Canadian Legion's red poppy campaign.

"Young people don't want to celebrate war," Celyn Dufay of the University of Ottawa said. "We want to work for peace."

Dufay hopes to distribute about 2,500 white poppy pins, including at the national Remembrance Day ceremony next week.

Maxwell said Dufay's move won't go over well with Canadian veterans.

"I don't think they'd be very pleased," he said. "I think they may even take it personally. I'm sure they would."

I've posted how "I" feel about the red and the white. What "I" feel the existing remembrance day has become. "I", however, am not allowed to voice those opinions without being called all kinds of names, including coward, because I don't believe in killing other human beings. This year, I have "toned down" what I post. An example would be the white Poppy thread.........................fu ck it.

I wasn't talking about you, I wasn't even thinking about what you've said on this when I posted that....at all.

In fact, I was thinking specifically of the university student who's quoted in the article in the OP.

And I agree you have toned down what you've posted this year over others (from what I can recall anyway) and I also agree that, what I've read at least, you've been expressing your own views. I think I may have even actually acknowledged that with my post in the White Poppy Thread too.

Many agree that the White Poppy has a place. Some say at Remembrance Day Ceremonies- some not.

Gerry, do you believe most people engaged in war believe in killing? Or do you think perhaps they are just in it to ensure if killing is necessary the right people get killed, ie Hitler and his ilk and Mussolini and his ilk? The Allies didn't start the war! What would you have them do? If you strongly object to something you have to supply a viable alternative.......................in a sane and calm manner. Going off half cocked and swearing at people (apparently like Rob Ford) accomplishes nothing but animosity and hard feelings.

White poppy movement is pure rubbish, and you might be subsidizing it

Canada’s red poppy, a symbol of Remembrance Day, is under attack from pacifists pretending to be defence analysts and the worst thing is, you might be subsidizing it.

This week, activists launched a campaign called I Remember For Peace that uses the white poppy.

White is the colour of surrender and the white poppy was started by pacifist groups in Britain in the 1920s. It’s been associated with the pacifist cause ever since.

Steven Staples, one of the organizers of the campaign, claims the red poppy worn by generations of Canadians glorifies war while his poppy is for peace.

Rubbish is the only word I can think of right now that is suitable for print.

The white poppy campaign was started by Ceasefire.ca, a project of the Rideau Institute, a small lobby group in Ottawa. While most Canadians won’t know the Rideau Institute, they likely know the group’s work since they are often cited as defence analysts by journalists writing on military issues.

The weird thing is, though, that despite claiming to be defence analysts, the Rideau Institute is pretty much against any and every military purchase.

So it’s really no surprise this essentially pacifist group would push for the white poppy.

In a TV interview with Staples, the main spokesman for Rideau and Ceasefire.ca, I accused him of being a pacifist. Nothing wrong with being one, let’s just all admit what we are.

But Staples denied being a pacifist and said he would have taken up arms in 1939, but he wasn’t talking about the Nazis, he would have fought for the communists in Spain.

He doesn’t like Canada spending on the military, he pushes the white pacifist poppy and he would have fought for communists – what a combo!

All of this tells you plenty about the Rideau Institute, Ceasefire.ca and the white poppy campaign, but how do you fund them?

You fund them through tax breaks given to their donors, indirect donors.

See, the Rideau Institute doesn’t qualify for charitable status because it is not involved in charitable activities. They are all about political activism and political activism doesn’t get you a charitable number.

So what do they do? Well, if you click on the donate button at the Rideau Institute’s website, it takes you to the website of the Tides Canada Foundation. Tides is a far-left clearing house that supports all kinds of progressive causes.

The hideous White Poppy Brigade are at it in Britain as well now.

Left Wing organisation, Peace Pledge Union, which distributes controversial white poppies, has been awarded a £95,800 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a project to honour conscientious objectors.

But this follows the lottery fund’s refusal to fund a £92,200 Royal British Legion scheme to help children seed millions of poppies.

They were intended to flower in honour of Britain’s fallen servicemen during next year’s First World War centenary commemorations.

As Falklands War veteran Simon Weston put it: ‘Why is remembering conscientious objectors any more worthy than teaching school children about World War I?’

And Graham Mentor-Morris, a former Royal Artilleryman who submitted the lottery bid for the legion’s Greenhithe and Swanscombe branch in Kent, said the Heritage Lottery Fund supports whichever cause the Left currently finds "trendy".

This is not the first time the Heritage Lottery Fund has not got its priorities right. Earlier this year it gave thousands of pounds to South American hamster breeders - but turned down D-Day veterans' requests for help for a last run to the beaches of Normandy.

Using money raised through the National Lottery, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), which started in 1994, the same year as the National Lottery, aims to make "a lasting difference for heritage, people and communities across the UK and help build a resilient heritage economy."

Thankfully, the 2014 Real Poppy project, which has the backing of the Prime Minister and the Prince of Wales, will still go ahead after DIY chain B&Q stepped in with the money.

The Left just has no shame.

Fury after Lottery fund snubs Royal British Legion... but awards £95,000 to 'white poppy' conscientious objectors' scheme

The Peace Pledge Union, which distributes controversial white poppies, was awarded a £95,800 grant for a project to honour conscientious objectors

War veterans condemned the Heritage Lottery Fund yesterday for funding pacifists while refusing to support a school poppy project.

The Peace Pledge Union, which distributes controversial white poppies, was awarded a £95,800 grant for a project to honour conscientious objectors.

It follows the lottery fund’s refusal to fund a £92,200 Royal British Legion scheme to help children seed millions of poppies.

They were intended to flower in honour of Britain’s fallen servicemen during next year’s First World War centenary commemorations.

Graham Mentor-Morris, a former Royal Artilleryman who submitted the lottery bid for the legion’s Greenhithe and Swanscombe branch in Kent, condemned the lottery decision as ‘incredibly wrong’.

‘Some 16 million people died in the First World War and they are not being respected,’ said Mr Mentor-Morris, 58, who served in the Falklands and Northern Ireland.

‘I feel there was a genuine lack of understanding and respect from the Heritage Lottery Fund. They failed to see the bigger picture.

‘The campaign that we tried to seek funding for would have involved people from all walks of life, from children as young as three to people as old as 103.

‘I don’t want to sound bitter, but if you look at the Heritage Lottery Fund they support the trendy things.’

Simon Weston, the Welsh Guardsman famously badly burned in the Falklands War, said he found the decisions hard to reconcile.

‘Why is remembering conscientious objectors any more worthy than teaching school children about World War I?’ he said.

‘People have died to let these people [pacifists] have the rights and freedoms to hold these views.

‘It seems that the smaller crowd gets the biggest voice. You can be in the majority and be ignored.’

Falklands War veteran Simon Weston: 'Why is remembering conscientious objectors any more worthy than teaching school children about World War I?'

The award follows the lottery fund's refusal to fund a £92,200 Royal British Legion scheme to help children seed millions of poppies

The Peace Pledge Union was founded in 1935 and its members led anti-bombing campaigns during the Second World War.

Its ‘white poppy project’ is intended to honour the 16,000 conscientious objectors who refused to bear arms during the First World War. Many were jailed for their beliefs.

The project will include the production of new online materials, a range of school activities, public events and an exhibition.

The 2014 Real Poppy project, which has the backing of the Prime Minister and the Prince of Wales, will go ahead after DIY chain B&Q stepped in with the money.

The Heritage Lottery Fund said it had not been able to fund the seed project due to ‘high demand’.

Carole Souter, its chief executive, said: ‘It is disappointing that we were unable to support the Greenhithe and Swanscombe application for a Kent-based project to sow poppies across the county.

‘Demand for our funds is high and we unfortunately cannot fund every application.’

A spokesman for the fund said it was committed to helping people learn about the First World War and has awarded more than £34million for projects marking the centenary.

These people are sanctimonious morons.

Peace is fine but Remembrance day is for remembering those who died. The white poppy types seem to think that remembering those who died is somehow the opposite to peace. Wearing a red poppy doesn't mean you are for war, it means, simply, that we honour those
who died. To me the white poppy is infringing on Remembrance Day and insulting our soldiers who do remember what the red poppy means.
