I think it was the beards that did it. St. Louis' well trimmed, formal, urban foliage just couldn't compete with the full growth Benedictine beards and shaved heads of the Red Sox. They probaby got that from the 2011 Bruins playoff gear.
The LA Dodgers had the same thing, but opped for pony tails or Mohawks on top.. real backwoods Coureur de Bois stuff.. probably got that from the 2012 Kings
I would normally have supported the BoSox.. but not this year.. and it all has to do with their manager John Farrell who bailed out of his managerial role after 2 years with Toronto to return to Boston.
Not that i blame him.. he moved from a $120mm to a $160mm payroll.. a contender.. and gets to manage in venerable old Fenway Park.. with its history and natural turf and rabid fan base.. instead of the multipurpose, energy-sapping fiasco that is Roger's Centre.. in a hockey hotbed like Toronto.
But basically he made some promises, and some promises were made to him (in terms of a significantly increased payroll and a guaranteed term in which to build a winner).. which he DISCARDED as soon as something better came along.
He went through two much classier managers on his route to the Championship in Jim Leyland of Detroit and Mike Matheny of St. Louis.. on the back of a team that others built for him
It worked out for him, but my guess is this will be his one and only Chamionship.. but regardless.. for me he'll ALWAYS be a no class BUM.
