Well now that you ask, I don't like the brainwashing part that leads to burka wearage.
I don't like brain washing a female into believe she is less than and dirty and provocative, and then making her cover up because showing skin is immodest.

I don't like that part either.

I fully support you on this one Sal, and I wish the opposing correspondents would read the article in Middle east quarterly.'

well and to be honest I thought much the same as those here until I had contact with Canadian Muslim women who grew up in the East. It is only the very bold and strong that defy the custom. One of the problems they face here in Canada is isolation. They are surrounded by pro-burka males and females and know little of the country or customs until they have been here a while. It is easiest to just shut up and suck it up.

There is a movement within the community and woman but it is dangerous and much pressure is applied.

If they choose burka free they have to leave their community completely and pretty much disappear in some cases. Canadian law means little to them.

Really there is little point in arguing against a lack of knowledge but every little chip away might help someone at some point.

For driving- License and operating a vehicle- No Burka.
Courts- No
Govt offices- No Burka.
Voting- No
And again it is a cultural norm, not a Religious based requirement.

Now consider how many companies would hire a women in a full fledged Burka as a person who meets the public as they walk in the door. Not many.

If they wish to wear the Burka shopping and such I do not care.

Except if I owned a business I would not allow a burka in my establishment, because how do I know there is a female under there and not a man come to rob me?

Unfortunately, the French are way ahead of us. think how many moderate Muslims would flock here, and how many crazies would leave...
Ban the Burqa? France Votes Yes :: Middle East Quarterly

No need to ban it. The French have treated their Muslim population like crap. Look to Europe and the rise of Hate Parties little different than the rise of Hitler. We do not want that here.
Our SCoC dropped the ball on the Burka in Court.

Is that what YOU prefer? What do the Canadian Islamic women prefer?

It's traditional.

Thanks for your comments everybody.

Now I have a deeper insight into what my grandparents had to go through when the Canadian Govt tried to snuff out our Culture and funny Religion

I hope you all enjoy our cuisine next Christmas as it now deeply rooted in Canadian Culture as mainstream.

Canadian Society and at times enforced by the courts have made Canada a very open and accepting society.
What happened in the past is exactly that, the past.

Well on that we differ.

of course you do, just like sal and humbolt don't see how they are really no different than the ME when it comes to dress codes. In some places in the ME women are forced to wear burkas, they both propose that we force women NOT to wear burkas. Anything else they would like to ban when it comes to clothing?
